A hand-held device and method for operating a single pointer touch sensitive user interface of a hand-held electronic device are provided. The method includes defining as being active a first one of a set of two or more controllable interface functions including at least a first controllable interface function and a second controllable interface function. A control gesture is then detected and the control gesture is associated with the active one of the set of two or more controllable interface functions, where the detected pattern adjusts the performance of the active controllable interface function. A transition gesture is then detected including a pointer pattern movement, which is not included as a control gesture for any of the two or more controllable interface functions, where upon detection of the transition gesture, the transition gesture defines a second one of the set of two or more controllable interface functions as being the active one of the set of two or more controllable interface functions. A further control gesture is then detected and the control gesture is associated with the active one of the set of two or more controllable interface functions, where the detected pattern adjusts the performance of the active controllable interface function.

Hand-held device and method for operating a single pointer touch sensitive user interface

The present invention provides a hand-held device including a split touch sensitive input surface, the touch sensitive input surface including a first touch sensitive array, which has a position sensor adapted for detecting a relative position of a first pointer device, and a second touch sensitive array which has a position sensor adapted for detecting a relative position of a second pointer device. The second touch sensitive array is separate from the first touch sensitive array and is located on a common side with the first touch sensitive array. The hand-held device further includes a display visible from an exterior surface of the device, which is different from the exterior side interface surface where the first touch sensitive array and the second touch sensitive array are located, where the current relative position of an end of a respective pointer interacting with each of the first touch sensitive array and the second touch sensitive array are illustrated on respective display areas of the display by a display controller coupled to the first touch sensitive array, the second touch sensitive array, and the display.

An angle measuring device is described for accurately indicating the position of the rotor relative to the reference position in view of perceived changes of rotor speed. The measuring device includes a sensor for detecting the markings and generating a sensor signal in response thereto; an angle counter, responsive to the sensor, for generating a position signal; and a correction circuit, responsive to the sensor signal, for correcting the position signal. The position signal is corrected in response to the sensor signal so as to provide an accurate indication of the position of the rotor.

In one aspect of the present invention, an angle measuring device is described for measuring the angle of a rotating rotor having a plurality of markings spaced thereabout. The device comprises: a sensor positioned adjacent the rotor for detecting the markings and generating a sensor signal in response thereto; an indicator device, responsive to the sensor signal, for generating a position signal indicative of the angular position of the rotor. Additionally, a timing circuit is used for measuring the time between contiguous sensor signals; and a comparator is used for comparing at least one of the measured times against at least one predetermined value and for generating a comparison output signal indicative thereof. Finally, a correction circuit is used, in response to the comparison output signal, for correcting the position signal to avoid inaccuracies due to such problems as unequal spacing between the markings.
