A cementing tool for use in a well has a housing and a closing sleeve received thereabout. An operating sleeve is received in the housing and is interconnected with the closing sleeve so that movement in the operating sleeve will cause the closing sleeve to move. The closing sleeve is detachably connected to the housing and is movable from the first or open position to a second or closed position in which it covers cementing ports defined in the housing. The tool has a plurality of lock rings that are moved with the closing sleeve. A plurality of locking grooves are adapted to receive the lock rings such that the engagement of any of the lock rings with any of the locking grooves will prevent the closing sleeve from moving out of the closed position.

Methods and devices for completion of well bores and more particularly, to reverse circulation cementing of casing strings in well bores are provided. One example of a method may comprise a method for providing fluidic access to an outer annulus of a casing string within a well bore. One example of a device may comprise a casing hanger, the casing hanger comprising a fluid port wherein the fluid port provides fluidic access to an outer annulus by allowing fluid to pass through the casing hanger; a landing sub attached to the casing hanger; and an isolation device attached to the landing sub wherein the isolation device is adapted to allow fluidic isolation of a portion of the landing sub from a portion of the outer annulus of the well bore.

Methods and apparatus for completion of well bores

A method for selectively closing a downhole one way check valve, the method having the following steps: attaching the valve to a casing; locking the valve in an open configuration; running the casing and the valve into the wellbore; reverse circulating a composition down an annulus defined between the casing and the wellbore; injecting a plurality of balls into the annulus; unlocking the valve with the plurality of balls; and closing the valve.

An improved downhole tool apparatus for limiting the extrusion of a packer element. The apparatus includes a packer mandrel having a packer element assembly disposed in a wellbore. Packer retaining shoes are disposed about the packer mandrel at the ends of the packer element assembly. The packer retaining shoes have an inner retainer and an outer retainer. The inner retainer has a plurality of segments having gaps therebetween that expand in width when the retaining shoe is moved from an initial position in which it is disposed about the packer mandrel to an expanded position wherein it engages the wellbore to limit the extrusion of the packer element assembly. The outer retainer is likewise made up of a plurality of segments having gaps therebetween that will expand. The outer retainer engages the wellbore to limit the extrusion of the packer element assembly. The inner retainer segments cover the gaps that exist between the outer retainer segments and the outer retainer segments cover the gaps that exist between the inner retainer segments so that extrusion is limited. The packer retaining shoes also include a wedge disposed about the packer mandrel at the upper and lower ends of the packer element assembly. The retaining shoes provide enhanced high temperature and higher pressure performance in that extrusion in wells having high temperature and high pressure is severely limited if not completely prevented.

Expandable retaining shoe

An improved downhole tool apparatus for limiting the extrusion of a packer element. The apparatus includes a packer mandrel having a packer element assembly disposed in a wellbore. Packer retaining shoes are disposed about the packer mandrel at the ends of the packer element assembly. The packer retaining shoes have an inner retainer and an outer retainer. The inner retainer has a plurality of segments having gaps therebetween that expand in width when the retaining shoe is moved from an initial position in which it is disposed about the packer mandrel to an expanded position wherein it engages the wellbore to limit the extrusion of the packer element assembly. The outer retainer is likewise made up of a plurality of segments having gaps therebetween that will expand. The inner retainer segments cover the gaps that exist between the outer retainer segments and the outer retainer segments cover the gaps that exist between the inner retainer segments so that extrusion is limited. The retaining shoes provide enhanced high temperature and higher pressure performance in that extrusion in wells having high temperature and high pressure is severely limited if not completely prevented.

A high temperature, high pressure retrievable packer adapted for service under extreme operating conditions when the packer apparatus is held in the wellbore with a mechanical slip and a barrel slip. The barrel slip has a barrel slip body with a plurality of openings defined in the outer surface of the body. Cylindrical inserts are received in the openings. The cylindrical inserts define upward facing and downward facing gripping edges that will engage casing when the barrel slip body is radially expanded. The inserts are preferably tungsten carbide inserts. A sufficient number of inserts are included along the length and around the circumference of the barrel slip so that the barrel slip can get a good grip in the casing wall. Separate metals may be used for the barrel slip body and the inserts so that a higher yield strength alloy steel may be utilized than is possible with other barrel slip arrangements.

A packer apparatus for sealing between a tubing string and a casing in a wellbore is disclosed. The packer apparatus includes a seal assembly disposed about a packer mandrel. Upper and lower seal wedges are disposed about the packer mandrel above and below the seal assembly and may be inserted between the seal assembly and the packer mandrel to radially expand the seal assembly into engagement with the casing. The seal assembly includes an expandable elastomeric seal element having anti-extrusion bridge elements disposed in recesses at the upper and lower ends thereof. The anti-extrusion elements form an almost complete circle and thus are arcuately shaped having first and second ends with a gap therebetween. The anti-extrusion bridge elements are preferably automatically radially retractable elements so that when the seal wedges are removed from between the seal assembly and the packer mandrel, the automatically radially retractable anti-extrusion elements will apply a radially inwardly directed force sufficient to cause the seal assembly to radially retract and close around the packer mandrel.

The present invention provides a tool and methods of placing a treatment fluid in a subterranean formation penetrated by a well bore by way of selected perforations extending from casing cemented in the well bore into the formation. The fluid placement tool includes a fluid flow passageway extending therethrough, at least one resilient self expandable cup type packer attached thereto and a valve disposed in the fluid flow passageway which closes the passageway when a closing plug is dropped into the tool. The placement tool is capable of releasing the cup type packer whereby it provides a seal between the tool and the casing when a first predetermined fluid pressure is applied to the tool after a closing plug is dropped therein and opening the fluid flow passageway whereby the treatment fluid is discharged from the tool below the packer when the fluid pressure is increased to a second predetermined fluid pressure. Methods of using the tool are also provided.

Well treatment fluid placement tool and methods

A packer apparatus with a circulating port. A housing of the packer has inflation passages, circulating passages, treating fluid passages, and equalizing passages defined therein. In a straddle packer embodiment, upper and lower packers are mounted on the housing on opposite sides of an outlet of the treating fluid passage. A circulation valve with a sliding differential pressure actuated valve sleeve is disposed below the packers. An inner mandrel is slidably received in the central opening of the housing. The mandrel has a mandrel bore and has upper inflation and circulating ports, lower inflation ports, upper and lower equalizing ports, a treating port and lower circulating ports, all of which communicate with the mandrel bore. The valve sleeve has a valve port. A lug and endless J-slot is operably associated with the housing and mandrel for controlling a telescoping position of the mandrel relative to the housing in response to reciprocation without rotation of the mandrel relative to the housing. The mandrel may also be used to lock the valve sleeve in a closed position. The lug and J-slot define a repeatable sequence of inflating (or deflating) position, intermediate position, circulating position, treating position, equalizing position, and ready position wherein the tool is ready to return to the original inflating position on the next telescoping stroke of the mandrel within the housing.

A long stroke packer for use in a well bore. The packer has a housing assembly with an operating mandrel assembly disposed therein. A packer mandrel assembly is slidably connected to the housing assembly. During operation, the operating mandrel assembly may be actuated to cycle a tool below the packer without setting the packer. After the operating mandrel assembly and housing assembly are moved a predetemined amount with respect to the packer mandrel assembly, the housing assembly is brought into contact with a sliding shoe on the packer mandrel assembly which in turn engages and deforms packer elements into sealing engagement with the well bore.
