A clutch for automatically engaging a driving member with a driven member upon application of torque to rotate the driving member in either direction, for maintaining engagement in either the drive or coast mode of operation and during the transition between drive and coast, for maintaining engagement in either the forward or reverse mode of operation and during the transition between forward and reverse, and for disengaging automatically upon interruption of the torque and slight rotation in the opposite direction.

Automatic clutch

Shift control apparatus for a multiple speed sliding gear manual transmission is characterized by the provision of a main shift rail which is rotatable for crossover selection and axially slidable for engagement of the selected gear. An auxiliary shift rail is axially slidable for engagement of an auxiliary gear and a reverse idler gear is axially slidable for engagement of reverse. Linkage is provided for sliding the auxiliary shift rail in one direction upon axial sliding movement of the main shift rail in a first direction and for sliding the reverse idler gear in the same one direction upon axial sliding movement of the main shift rail in a second direction. The linkage prevents inadvertent sliding movement of the reverse idler gear. There is also provided an inhibiting device for preventing engagement of reverse inadvertently.

Transmission shift control apparatus

A shift control mechanism particularly adapted for use with a manual transmission having a main control shaft on an axis normal to a single shift fork rail. Both rotational and longitudinal motion is transferred from the main control shaft to the shift fork rail through a single pivoted idler lever. A pair of shift forks and a reverse gear transfer bar are connected to an interlock system which insures that the shift fork rail establishes only one gear ratio at any time as it is rotated for crossover selection and moved longitudinally for gear engagement.

Transmission shift control mechanism

A power transfer mechanism incorporated in a multiple path drive system comprises a transfer case disposed between a source of input torque and a pair of drive axles. Torque is transferred directly to the fixed axle and, when required, is transferred automatically to the steering axle through a double-acting overrunning clutch. A friction clutch provides a preset constant friction drive through a separate path in parallel with the overrunning clutch for independent torque transfer from the steering axle to the fixed axle.

Automatic four-wheel drive transfer case

A gear assembly having both compactness and a short installation length includes a mainshaft sun gear and a ring gear rotatable on a first axis, and an internal sub-assembly having intermediate ring and sun gears mounted in an eccentric bearing block for rotation on a second axis offset from the first axis. The assembly may be mounted entirely within a drive sprocket.

Compact gear assembly

A shift control mechanism for a manual transmission incorporates a control lever with a ball fulcrum, and a reversing lever between the ball fulcrum and the shift rail. The mechanism acts as a rigid lever in crossover in one direction, and acts as an articulated lever to provide fore and aft motion of the shift rail in the other direction. A positive reverse inhibitor allows shifting into first or reverse from neutral, but prevents shifting into reverse from first.

A compact manual transmission includes an input shaft and plural countershafts, one of which serves as the output shaft and the other of which serves both as a countershaft for obtaining a low reduction ratio forward drive and as a reverse idler shaft. Low forward drive is through a gear train comprising three reduction ratio gear sets controlled by a single clutch. Reverse drive is through two reduction ratio gear sets controlled by a single clutch. The transmission is particularly adaptable for use in an automotive vehicle having a transversely mounted engine. The transmission is further adaptable for direct connection with the ring gear of an associated differential, such as in a front-wheel drive vehicle.

Compact manual transmission for a transversely mounted engine

A power transfer mechanism incorporates a planetary or epicyclic gear set which may be shifted between high and low-range conditions to establish direct drive and reduction ratio drive modes. The ring and planet gears are unloaded in high, thus avoiding vibration and wear commonly experienced when running locked up. The carrier defines an output member within which the planetary assembly is nested, thereby providing a shortened installation length for this type of unit. A shifting sleeve under the ring gear bearing support further shortens installation length. The sleeve includes a floating shift collar which does not disengage from the ring gear, thus eliminating one set of mesh points commonly encountered in this type of range selection.

Compact planetary gear assembly

A power transfer mechanism incorporated in a multiple path drive system comprising a transfer case disposed between a source of input torque and a pair of drive axles. Torque is transferred directly to one drive axle and is transferred automatically to the other drive axle through a double-acting overrunning clutch when required. The clutch is biased toward one engaged position, and is prevented from locking inadvertently in the other engaged position by a direction-sensitive blocking device.

A limited slip differential mechanism of the speedsensitive type having a rotatable casing and gearing supported within the casing adapted to drive a pair of relatively rotatable output elements including a friction clutch mechanism associated with the gearing and the casing to resist relative rotation. The limited slip differential includes an actuator for the clutches, the actuator being associated with a fluid pump mechanism and the fluid pump mechanism being mounted within the actuator. The fluid pump is carried by the actuator and has an input or drive shaft driveable by a side gear of the differential and the actuator is carried by the casing whereby relative rotation between the casing and the side gear will create fluid pressure to activate the actuator and apply the clutch to resist relative rotation.

Speed-sensitive differential mechanism

A transmission including a compact die cast aluminum housing having a steel support sleeve secured thereto by crimping to the housing forward wall, a countershaft assembly including a cluster gear countershaft and a flexible countershaft extension, and a shift control linkage assembly providing rotary and axial shift rail movement resulting in a desirable shift pattern.
