An electrical header receptacle (10) is provided to be connected to a printed circuit board (11) and to be mounted in an enclosure (12). A housing (13) has a well (20) formed on the first side (16) of the base (15) of the housing (13). A metal shield (25) covers the second side (17) of the base (15) and is crimped over the base (15) so that a portion of the metal shield (15) covers a portion of the first side (16) of the base (15). A plurality of spaced-apart male contact pins (14) extend through respective openings in the metal shield (25) and base (15) exiting from the well (20) in the base (15). A sealant (33) is disposed in the well (20) and forms a waterproof seal about the plurality of male contact pins (14). The male contact pins (14) extend outwardly from the metal shield (25) and pass through an electromagnetic interference filter (35) and are connected to the printed circuit board (11). The plurality of male contact pins (14) are joined to the electromagnetic filter (35) to prevent passage of electromagnetic interferences therethrough. The electromagnetic filter (35) may be mounted vertically or horizontally with respect to the metal shield (25) and is electrically connected to the metal shield (25). A flange seal (40) is disposed between the first side (16) of the base (15) and the enclosure (12) to provide a waterproof seal. The portion of the metal shield (25) on the first side (16) of the base (15) makes electrical contact with the enclosure (12).

Sealed and filtered header receptacle

A member (13) with a shorting contact (14) thereon is disposed in a receptacle housing (11). The shorting contact (14) is in mating electrical contact with an interface (15). When a header (12) is inserted into the receptacle housing (11), an inclined portion (29) of a beam (28) formed on the header (12) deflects the shorting contact (14) and opens the electrical circuit between the shorting contact (14) and the interface (15). Male pin contacts (25) in the header (12) electrically engage female contacts (21) within the receptacle housing (11) before the shorting circuit is broken. When the header (12) is removed from the receptacle housing (11) the shorting circuit is closed before electrical contact is opened between the male pin contacts (25) and the female contacts (21). In this manner, spurious signals are prevented. Extension means (32) extending from the sides of the beam (28) are disposed between the shorting contacts ( 14) and the interfaces (15) assuring the opening of the shorting circuit when the header (12) is inserted in the receptacle housing (11).

Electrical shorting system

A connector system (10) for use with magnetic ballast is disclosed. The connector system (10) includes a mag wire carrier (12), attachable to the ballast and having anvils (24) for supporting magnet wires from the ballast coils. The system (10) further includes a connector (150) having terminals (14) with magnet wire terminating slots (56) for terminating wires on the anvils (24), a first terminating section (74) for terminating wires from electronic devices mounted on the ballast and a second terminating section (70) for terminating exit wires.

Magnetic ballast connector system

High density electrical interconnections are established by using an electrical connector comprising a plurality of terminals held in position by resilient housing latches and by a separate terminal position assurance insert which is formed as part of a one-piece member also having a connector position assurance insert. The terminals position assurance insert is inserted into the housing from the rear and abuts a projection on each terminal thus assuring that the resilient housing latch engages the terminal. A connector position assurance insert attached to the terminal position by a integral strap is inserted beneath a connector latch to prevent the depression of the latch. A strap is deformed so that the connector position assurance insert is located parallel to and adjacent to the terminal position assurance insert when the two are fully seated in the connector. The terminal position assurance insert is inserted immediately adjacent a side wall of the connector housing on which the connector latch is mounted and above a wire crimp and insulation barrel portion to the rear of the projecting section of the terminal. Both the terminal position assurance insert and the connector position assurance insert include laterally deflectable latching springs for retention in the housing.

High density electrical connector

An apparatus in the form of an electrical connector which permits electrical programming of circuits, such as an integrated circuit component, and subsequent mechanical reprogramming of the same circuitry is disclosed. The connector includes a plurality of signal terminals and at least one ground terminal adapted to engage printed circuit board traces joining leads of an integrated circuit component. A fusible wire initially joins selected signal terminals to ground. Portions of the wire can be severed by application of an electrical potential between selected signal terminals and ground sufficient to generate a current in excess of the current carrying capacity of the wire. The terminals are held in place by an insulative body and are inserted into an insulative housing where contact can be made with a pin header having detachable pins for mechanically reprogramming the device.

Electrically and mechanically programmable electrical apparatus

A continuous strip of connector housing material is described which comprises a succession of housing segments that are latched together at their ends. Each segment contains a plurality of individual housing cells that are connected to each other by severable webs. The latches between juxtaposed segments are also severable. A connector housing of a desired size, as the regards the number of terminals therein, is obtained by severing from the end of the strip the desired number of housing cells. The connectors thus produced may be of the type which require a closure member which is fitted into the wire receiving ends of the cells. A continuous strip of closure members are also provided. The housings may by of either the feed-through type which are installed on wires intermediate the wire ends, or they may be of a wire end type, which are installed on the ends of wires.

Two part connector housings in strip form

Apparatus for installing connectors on cables is disclosed. Each connector comprises a connector housing having a conductor receiving end and terminals therein which receive wires and establish contact therewith. A cover or closure is provided which is assembled to the connector housing at the conductor receiving end. The apparatus comprises a housing jig, a cover jig which is opposed to the housing jig, and a cable locator which locates the cable between the two jigs. Cooperating cutter blades may be provided on the jigs so that when they are moved towards each other, the cable will be cut and the conductors moved into the terminals in the connector housing. In accordance with a further embodiment, the housings and covers are produced as continuous strip material which is fed to the two jigs. Strip material cutters are provided for cutting a connector housing and a section of cover members from the strip at the time of installation of the connector on the cable.

Applicator for installing two part connector assemblies in cables

Electrical terminal comprises first and second plate members joined by an integral bight. A wire-receiving slot extends into one of the plate members and an enlarged clearance opening is provided in the other plate member. The terminal is adapted to be inserted into a cavity in a housing having wire-admitting slots which permit placement of a wire in the slots with the wire extending through the cavity. A rib is provided in the cavity which is received in the clearance opening in the other plate member, the rib having a wire supporting surface at its upper end. The terminal is produced from dual thickness material with the first plate member and a major portion of the second plate member being of material of reduced thickness. Parts of the one plate member are a relatively thick stock metal and the free end of the other plate member is against the relatively thick stock metal. The wire-receiving slot is a sheared slit and the terminal is intended to make connections to relatively fine wires.

Electrical terminal and terminal housing for making connections to

Stamped and formed electrical terminal has a conductor-receiving portion comprising parallel plate-like members having aligned conductor-receiving slots. The terminal has a transition portion intermediate the ends thereof and has a contact portion extending from the transition portion. The transition portion comprises first and second sections which extend from the plate-like members. Each section has an arcuate cross section part adjacent to the plate-like member which fairs into a part having a U-shaped cross section. The contact portion comprises one or more arms that extend from at least one of the U-shaped parts. In one embodiment, each U-shaped part has two contact arms extending therefrom which are resiliently biased against each other to provide contact force on a complementary terminal when the two terminals are coupled.

Terminal for connecting a wire to a blade type terminal

A method of manufacturing an electrical connector of the telephone jack type by insert molding, is disclosed. The conductors for the connector jack are first stamped and formed in continuous strip form from conductive sheet metal with the continuous strip having groups of conductors extending therefrom and spaced along the length of the strip. The strip is fed to an injection molding apparatus and the leading set of conductors of the strip is clamped in the mold of the apparatus in a manner such that the contact portions of the conductors are held between core pins. These core pins extend into the mold cavity so that when the plastic material fills the mold, intermediate portions of the conductors will be embedded in the molding material. When the mold is opened, the core pins are withdrawn from the cavity, the core pins having formed the plug-receiving opening in the telephone jack.

Method of manufacturing electrical connector receptacles

Sub-assembly for a modular jack comprises an insulating support, which is dimensioned to be assembled to a jack housing having a group of stamped and formed conductors mounted on the support. The conductors have plate-like wire-receiving portions which are provided with wire-receiving slots so that wires can be connected to the conductors by movement of the wires into the slots. The sub-assemblies are produced as a continuous composite strip comprising a continuous strip of conductors with support members assembled to the groups of conductors of the metallic strip.

Connector jack

Modular jack-type connector receptacle comprises an insulating housing having a rearward end and having a ledge extending beyond the rearward end from one of the housing sidewalls. The conductors are stamped and formed members which extend through channels in the external sidewall and through openings and into the plug-receiving opening of the housing. A plurality of side-by-side stalls are provided on the ledge and the conductors extend into these stalls, each conductor having a slotted plate-type wire-receiving means on its end locating within one of the stalls. Wires can be connected to the stamped and formed conductors by supporting the underside of the ledge on a suitable anvil and inserting the wires into the wire-receiving portions.

Modular jack

A jack-type electrical connector receptacle is disclosed which is intended for mounting on a circuit board with the rearward end of the connector against the surface of the circuit board. The side-by-side conductors are stamped and formed members which extend through spaced-apart openings in the connector housing and diagonally into the plug-receiving opening of the housing. Intermediate portions of the conductors extend across an external sidewall of the housing, past the rearward end of the housing. The conductors are offset and spread apart at their rearward ends which are intended to be inserted into holes in the circuit board.

Electrical connector receptacle

A method of manufacturing a connector receptacle of the telephone jack type is disclosed. The jack housing is produced as a one-piece molding having conductor-receiving channels extending across one of its external sidewalls from the plug-receiving end to the rearward end. The conductors are manufactured by stamping a flat strip to produce groups of spaced-apart conductors extending laterally of the length of the strip. To assemble the conductors to the housing, a group of conductors is positioned in alignment with the channels and the conductors are inserted into the channels. First end portions of the conductors are reversely bent so that they extend diagonally into the plug-receiving opening of the housing and second end portions may be bent laterally and offset from each other so that the second ends can be inserted into staggered holes on a circuit board.

Method for making jack type receptacles

A double-ended connector receptacle for end-to-end connection of modular plugs. Conductors extend longitudinally in channels in a frame and are bent around the frame to form spring contacts whose alignment is maintained by barrier walls extending from the frame. The connector is assembled by telescopic insertion of the frame into a tubular sheath which firmly retains the frame by latching and biasing mechanisms which are integral to the frame and the sheath. Both parts are designed to be produced in straight action molds.
