A milling machine having a horizontal slide and a vertical slide. The horizontal slide is mounted for movement between a loading station and a milling area. The vertical slide is mounted on the horizontal slide for vertical movement. A chuck is mounted on the vertical slide and has jaws for gripping a workpiece at the loading station. Milling tools in the milling area mill a workpiece held by the chuck when the horizontal slide is moved to the milling area. The milling tools include a face mill, a semi-finish end mill and a finish end mill which are arranged in a straight line along the path of movement of the chuck when the horizontal slide is moved from the loading station to the milling area. All of the milling tools are mounted in a receptacle which is capable of positioning the milling tools offset from the center line of the workpiece.

Milling machine

Apparatus for machining first and second throws on a crankshaft wherein the throws are displaced outwardly from the central axis of the shaft in angularly spaced relation to one another. The crankshaft is gripped by a collet. The collet is mounted on a spindle at a point offset radially from the spindle axis. The collet is capable of rotating from a first position in which the first throw is on the axis of spindle rotation to a second position in which the second throw is on the axis of spindle rotation. A tool is provided for cutting the throws when the collet is secured in either one of the two positions. A collet receiver is provided to open and close the collet. A housing for the collet and collet receiver is mounted on the spindle. The collet is locked in each of the two rotative positions by interengaging teeth on the collet receiver and on the housing. When the collet receiver is moved relative to the housing, the teeth become disengaged so that the collet is free to rotate. Thereafter by relatively moving the collet and collet receiver, the collet is opened to release the crankshaft.

Crankshaft turning machine

A tool turret has a brake to retain the turret in an an index position. The brake has stationary and rotatable brake members, each formed with a cone-shaped braking surface and a radial or face braking surface. A tooling plate carries a plurality of cutting tools and is mounted on the rotatable brake member. When the brake members are moved toward one another, the cone-shaped braking surfaces engage and the face braking surfaces engage in an indexed position in which one of the cutting tools is brought into a position for engaging a workpiece. When the brake members are disengaged, a motor turns the rotatable brake member and the tooling plate to another indexed position. The cone-shaped braking surfaces are mounted on flexibly resilient braking elements of the brake members to enable them to flex upon initial engagement of the cone-shaped braking surfaces, so that further movement of the brake members towards one another into full engagement with the face braking surfaces is permitted. The brake member on which the tooling plate is mounted is attached to the motor rotor by a flexible section, and the stator of the motor is mounted on a flex plate to enable axial float of the motor and to compensate for any lateral or angular misalignment of the motor and brake, so that full braking engagement can be achieved.

Tool turret indexer

An end mill for simultaneously milling two intersecting perpendicular surfaces of a part. The end mill is subjected to side cutting loads causing side deflection of the end mill, with the result that both the side-milled surface and the end-milled surface are not cut true to the part. To compensate for end mill deflection, a cam arrangement is provided to adjust the position of the end mill.

A machine tool has a main slide movable along a first path and a cross-slide assembly movable perpendicular to the path of the main slide. The cross-slide assembly has a first slide unit which is directly driven by a primary servo control. The cross-slide assembly has a second slide unit driven by the first slide unit through a spring-loaded follower acting against a cam which can transmit numerically-controlled offset to the second slide unit such that both slide units will follow identical paths. The cam is adjustable to enable correction of the offset. Each slide unit carries a cutting tool. The invention is applicable to multiple spindle machines having two or more spindles.

Adjustable multiple spindle machine tool

A method and apparatus for machining a matched set of fixed and orbiting scroll members for use in a scroll compressor. The respective wrap surfaces of the scroll members are simultaneously machined by respective rotating cutting tools. Specifically, rotational and linear movement of the fixed and orbiting scroll members together, synchronized with linear movement of the cutting tools, causes the simultaneous machining of the scroll members along respective wrap surfaces that form a radially inwardly moving sealing line of contact therebetween during compressor operation. Accordingly, any systemic or random deviation from a true involute form during machining of the matching of the matched scroll member set results in complementary deviations in the respective wrap surfaces, whereby a sealed relationship between the wrap surfaces is maintained at such point of deviation during compressor operation.

Method and apparatus for machining scroll wraps

A machine collet is provided for mounting and centering tools with minimum circular runout. The collet has a single pieces body formed with integral resilient flexures having lands for gripping the tool shank. The flexures are machined to the same dimensions and yield equally, thus maintaining centrality regardless of tool shank diameter.

Collet

Apparatus for protecting the ball screw drive and other agencies involved in the operation of a movable slide of a machine tool from becoming contaminated by cutting fluids, mist, metal dust, chips, etc. An encasement provides a substantially closed chamber for the ball screw and nut. The apparatus also protects the drive from mechanical damage by stopping the rotational inertia of the ball screw when excessive resistance to motion is encountered.

A boring machine having a work-holding spindle, a turret, and means for mounting a plurality of tools on the turret. A work-handling device is mounted on the turret having means to grip and release a workpiece. The work handling device is capable of loading and unloading the spindle.

A lead screw is threaded into a lead nut to move the lead nut one way or the other depending on the direction of rotation of the lead screw. The lead screw is held in an operative position by springs which prevent it from moving from its operative position until an excessive overload occurs. Braking disks are positioned on opposite sides of a sheave mounted on the lead screw. Abutments hold the braking disks spaced from the sheave to provide a small clearance when the shaft is in its operative position. When the shaft encounters an excessive overload, it will move axially from its operative position and its rotation will be stopped by one or the other of the braking disks. A yieldable support is provided for the braking disks. In one embodiment the yieldable support is a piston-cylinder assembly. In another embodiment it consists of a set of springs.

Lead screw overthrust protection

Tool changing mechanism for changing tools in boring and turning machines of the type in which the part revolves but the tooling does not revolve. A magazine containing tools with new tool bits is provided preferably at the front of the machine so that it is accessible and fully visible to the operator. Means are provided for relatively moving the machine turret and magazine into effective alignment so that a tool may be transferred from a tool holder on the magazine to the tool holder on the turret, and vice versa.

Tool changing mechanism

An elongated relatively rigid yet resilient tool compensating bar formed from rectangular bar stock with strategically placed slots to form three basic body members, namely a stationary body member, a lower body member, and an upper body member. The stationary body member is adapted to be secured in fixed position to a suitable support. The lower body member has side portions along opposite sides of the base member, being separated from the base member by a pair of slots and integrally connected to the base member by a flexure web or neck of the bar between said slots adjacent one end of the bar. This flexure web enables the lower body member to flex laterally relative to the stationary member. The upper body member is disposed over the stationary and lower body members and is separated therefrom by a third slot. Additional slots at opposite ends of the bar form flexure webs integrally connecting the upper body member to the lower body member and enabling the upper body member to flex relative to the lower body member in a direction lenthwise of the bar.

Adjustable tool compensating arm

A base member adapted to be secured to an operating table is provided with an upright arm portion. A movable member slidably related to the base member also is provided with an upright arm portion. The base member houses a locking arrangement for securing the movable member in a fixed position with respect to the base member when the upright arms are in position to produce the desired clamping pressure on a body part located between the arms. The locking arrangement also is operative to displace the movable member in incremental steps prior to locking in order to achieve the desired clamping pressure.
