The present invention is directed to retractor instrumentation for total hip arthroplasty, and methods of using same. In one illustrative embodiment, the device comprises a body, a first pin coupled to the body, and a second pin coupled to said body, wherein at least a portion of said first and second pins are adapted to penetrate human bone. In a further illustrative embodiment, a retractor instrumentation set comprises a retractor device, a shaft that is adapted to be removably coupled to the retractor device, and an inserter that is adapted to be removably coupled to the shaft.

Retractor instrumentation for total hip arthroplasty, and methods of using same

An orthopedic implant includes a pair of spaced apart end caps which are interconnected by a plurality of elongated flexible members. Each end cap includes an aperture formed therethrough for the use of a trochanteric guide wire for piloting the implant during trial insertion and final insertion into an intramedullary canal. At least one of the end caps includes a rounded end to enhance insertion. Preferably, the flexible members are bowed outwardly to provide a &ldquo;birdcage&rdquo; configuration.

Apparatus for distal femur sizing and resection includes a sizer member and a platform pivotably connected to the sizer member. An anterior femoral cut guide is movably engaged with the sizer member and includes a first retainer for retaining a removable reference device for referencing, and a second retainer for retaining a removable distal cut guide subsequent to removal of the reference device to position the distal cut guide on the femur. Retaining guides extend from the femoral cut guide. A slide member is movably mounted on the retaining guides. The slide member includes a carriage member, and a plunger resiliently mounted in the carriage, and movable for retaining the slide member on the retaining guides.

Apparatus and method for anterior and posterior referenced sizing and distal femur resection

An instrument for preparing a human patella for implanting a patellar prosthesis. A support member includes a quick-release base member mounted adjacent a first end of the support member. A reamer member is removably mounted on the quick-release base member. An attachment release member is resiliently mounted on the support member for movement into and out of engagement with the quick-release member and the reamer member. A stop member is adjustably mounted for limited movement on the support member to a plurality of calibrated positions for setting a controlled depth for movement of the reamer member.

Patella reaming system

An automatic ankle clamp for use with an extramedullary alignment device includes a cradle having a triggering device movably mounted thereon. A pair of clamp arms are resiliently mounted for movement on the triggering device between an open position and a closed position. A latch device interconnects the clamp arms and the cradle for retaining the clamp arms in the open position and for simultaneously releasing the clamp arms to the closed position in response to movement of the triggering device relative to the cradle. The clamp is attachable to an extramedullary alignment device such that urging the cradle and triggering device into engagement with a patient's ankle, automatically and simultaneously releases the clamp arms to grip the patient's ankle. A base is mounted on the cradle for calibrated medial/lateral adjustment of the clamp relative to the extramedullary alignment device.

Apparatus for distal femur sizing and resection includes an adjustable sizer cut guide device formed by a sizer member, a femoral cut guide and a slide stone. The slide stone is provided to receive an intramedullary rod inserted into the femur. A first member and a second member are sequentially, removably attachable to the adjustable sizer cut guide device. The first member is an adjustable reference device provided for referencing. The second member is a distal cut guide which is attached to the adjustable sizer cut guide device after removal of the reference device, to position the distal cut guide on the femur. Readable scales on the adjustable sizer cut guide device and on the adjustable reference device, are matched to provide a size reference for a femoral prosthesis.

An orthopedic instrument having a quarter-turn disconnect apparatus. A female socket is provided on a broach or cutting instrument and a male plug with a locking mechanism is provided on a cutting apparatus. The male plug is inserted into the socket and pushed forward slightly against the resistance of a spring. The plug or socket are then turned one-quarter turn at which point the locking mechanism falls into place.

An implantable prosthesis comprises a polyethylene prosthetic member that is substantially transparent to x-rays and a radiographic marker that is substantially opaque to x-rays. The radiographic marker is configured as a tension spring arranged as a continuous ring encircling the prosthetic member.

An apparatus for disassembling a head and acetabular component of a bipolar orthopedic hip prosthesis. The head includes a female taper configured for engaging a corresponding male taper of a femoral component of a hip prosthesis. The acetabular component includes a cavity in which the head is elastically constrained. The apparatus includes a rod having a male taper at one end thereof sized and configured to be received in taper locking engagement in the female taper of the head of the bipolar prosthesis. The rod has external threads that engage internal threads of a sleeve surrounding the rod. The sleeve includes a thrust surface at one end that engages the acetabular component as the sleeve is rotated relative to the rod. The sleeve causes the acetabular component to be pressed off of the head while the head remains taper locked to the rod. Continued rotation of the sleeve causes the head to be pressed off of the taper of the rod. A handle attached to the rod facilitates gripping the rod and preventing its rotation while the sleeve is being rotated.
