A coated article includes a non-conductive substrate, such as glass. At least one conductive coating is formed over at least a portion of the substrate, such as by chemical vapor deposition or physical vapor deposition. The conductive coating can be a functional coating and can have a thickness in the range of greater than 0 &#x212b; to less than 25,000 &#x212b;, such as less than 10,000 &#x212b;. At least one polymeric coating is electrodeposited over at least a portion of the conductive coating.

An electrically conductive protective coating or film is provided over the surface of a reflective coating of a solar mirror by flowing or directing a cation containing liquid and an anion containing liquid onto the conductive surface. The cation and the anion containing liquids are spaced from, and preferably out of contact with one another on the surface of the reflective coating as an electric current is moved through the anion containing liquid, the conductive surface between the liquids and the cation containing liquid to coat the conductive surface with the electrically conductive coating.

A protective coating is applied to the electrically conductive surface of a reflective coating of a solar mirror by biasing a conductive member having a layer of a malleable electrically conductive material, e.g. a paste, against a portion of the conductive surface while moving an electrodepositable coating composition over the conductive surface. The moving of the electrodepositable coating composition over the conductive surface includes moving the solar mirror through a flow curtain of the electrodepositable coating composition and submerging the solar mirror in a pool of the electrodepositable coating composition. The use of the layer of a malleable electrically conductive material between the conductive member and the conductive surface compensates for irregularities in the conductive surface being contacted during the coating process thereby reducing the current density at the electrical contact area.

The presence of biological contaminants in a liquid coating composition is determined by measuring the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere above the liquid and comparing the measured carbon dioxide level to a baseline carbon dioxide level. An electrodepositable composition is provided comprising: (a) active hydrogen-containing, cationic salt group-containing resin electrodepositable on a cathode; (b) at least one at least partially capped polyisocyanate curing agent; (c) at least one metal-containing catalyst; and (d) at least one material having the following general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is alkyl or substituted alkyl having 1 to 18 carbon atoms or aryl or substituted aryl; and R.sub.2 is hydrogen, alkyl or substituted alkyl having 1 to 18 carbon atoms or aryl or substituted aryl. The composition can demonstrate enhanced corrosion resistance at low metal catalyst levels without loss of cured film properties or appearance when electrodeposited and cured over conductive substrates.
