A filter element is particularly suitable as a 'green' filter element because all of its parts are flammable for disposal of after use by incineration. The filter element has an annular pleated filter media, hard resinous end seals and compressible gaskets bonded directly to the end seals. In accordance with one embodiment, both the end seals and gaskets are applied to the ends of the filter media by sequential steps in an injecting molding machine. In accordance with another embodiment, the gasket is molded to the end cap to form an integral assembly and the end cap is then fixed to the filter media by adhesive or by heat bonding.

A filter media including a first sheet having an inner surface and an outer surface, a second sheet having an inner surface and an outer surface, wherein the inner surface of the first sheet and the inner surface of the second sheet at least in part define at least two fluid channels between the first sheet and the second sheet to define a filter media having a first axial end and a second axial end, wherein the at least two fluid channels extend between the first axial end and the second axial end, and wherein, interior to said axial ends, the first and second sheets define at least one opening between a first one of said at least two fluid channels and a second one of said at least two fluid channels such that fluid can uninterruptedly flow between the first one of said at least two fluid channels and the second one of the at least two fluid channels, and further wherein the at least two fluid channels and the at least one opening are at least defined in part by a surface characteristic of the first sheet and a surface characteristic of the second sheet.

The end cap () comprises a cylindrical gasket-type fitting formed of soft, malleable material. The end cap () is connected to the end of an air filter () with an adhesive (). The end cap has a general 'U' shaped end portion that encases one end of the air filter (), and includes a locking tab (). The locking tab () is formed on the end cap's () interior lip to assist in holding the end cap () in place. Pre-molded air filter end caps () are primarily designed for use in safety air filters () for heavy motor vehicle applications, specifically, off road vehicles such as bulldozers, bob cats, transfer trucks, and the like.

Pre-molded air filter end cap and method of manufacturing an air filter

An air filter element includes an annular filter media having an end cap with an elongated sleeve portion having a unitary array of canted fins and a unitary annular disk partially closing one end. The end cap is preferably made of high impact polypropylene. An annular gasket made of foam rubber or polyurethane is adhered to the unitary annular disk portion, preferably by a two shot molding step.
