This patent describes embodiments of systems, apparatus and methods to provide improved control and coordination of a multiplicity of electric distribution grid-connected, energy storage units deployed over a geographically-dispersed area.

Distributed energy storage within the distribution network of an electric power network at least partially supplied by time varying and unpredictable generation sources provides smoothing of energy flow within the distribution network. The distributed energy storage may include a plurality of distributed energy storage units operating under the control of a single controller or regional controllers. The distributed energy storage units may operate as groups of units or as separate units.

Method of controlling distribution of energy within an energy distribution system and energy distribution systems are provided. An energy distribution system includes a central controller and one or more remote distribution control units. A method includes obtaining, with the central controller from the remote distribution control units, operational data indicating an operational condition of the energy distribution system. The method further includes comparing the operational condition to a polling rate threshold that indicates when the operational condition is approaching a condition threshold at which the central controller will operably control operation of the remote distribution control unit. The method further includes adjusting a polling rate at which the operational data is obtained in response to the operational condition crossing the polling rate threshold. The method yet further includes polling and controlling the remote distribution control unit with the central controller at the adjusted polling rate.

Adaptive polling in energy distribution systems with distributed energy storage

A power distribution protection system and method uses communications to coordinate operation of fault protection devices. Communications may be prioritized wherein messages of a lower priority are held or discarded in favor of messages of a higher priority, for example, messages indicating a fault condition. The devices may use multiple channel access schemes in accordance with a priority of a message to be communicated.

A power distribution system may have source, switching and load components, wherein at least one of the source, switching and load components has a wireless communication capability such that it is operable to act as a wireless communication access point. A mobile station seeking to associate with the one component may use a secure access protocol to gain such access. The secure access protocol may provide for receiving at the one component a management message from the mobile station. From the management message the component may obtain mobile identification information used to verify the identity of the mobile station and to initiate communication by sending an association message. Until after successful verification of the mobile station identity the component remains radio silent.

Method and apparatus for automated reconfiguration of an electric power distribution system with enhanced protection

A motor operator for an overhead power switch is disclosed including a microcontroller, a unique and powerful array of well-integrated sensors, a motor and drive developing substantial torque and speed and coupled to a switch actuator and responsive to the microcontroller, and a sophisticated program algorithm stored in memory at the actuator site for dynamically controlling, i.e., governing the various control modes as called for by changing conditions. The sensors include an encoder associated with the motor and drive that develops position information signals fed to the dynamic microcontroller to compute real time information including position, speed, and stopping distance used in conjunction with remote operate commands to open, close and monitor status of the switch in the various ways disclosed. Under the supervision of the microcontroller, a motor drive power switching circuit selectively applies a source of power, such as from an on site battery, to an electric motor to drive the switch toward open or closed position at different speeds, output force levels such as at different torques, and in continuous or incremental movements depending on conditions determined by the microcontroller in response to sensor inputs.

A system and method which detects and responds to abnormalities in a distribution system by reconfiguring nodes of the system to minimize the effects of the abnormality without the requirement of communicating with a central controller. The nodes in the system coordinate a response to a system abnormality through a process of self-organization in which each node acts based on its own programming, sensors, and stored data. Each node keeps other nodes apprised of its actions so that they may in turn decide what actions are appropriate for them to take.
