In one embodiment of the invention, a noise barrier is disclosed that provides noise insulation from roadway noise, construction sites, manufacturing sites, railways or the like wherein the noise barrier includes a plurality of vertical sections, with each section having a base portion with a generally inverted T configuration. The inverted T configuration includes bottom flanges designed to be mounted substantially in the ground. At least one mounting post is attached to the base portion; and a barrier member manufactured from recycled rubber materials and a binder is mounted to the mounting post. The barrier member includes a through hole for receipt of the mounting post. The through hole extends from a bottom end of the barrier member vertically up and out a top end of the barrier member.

Noise barrier

A laser system is disclosed wherein a tunable laser signal has encoded within it information related to its wavelength at any instant in time. This encoding in one example is performed by modulating the signal to contain its wavelength information. This is particularly useful in a distributed system for testing optical components, wherein at a test site, the test station must determine the wavelength of light at which a component was tested.

Apparatus and method for generation of optical signals

A method and system is disclosed of characterizing an optical amplifier for operation with a required tilt or curvature within predetermined limits. As the temperature of the erbium-doped optical amplifier is varied while a test signal is launched into the amplifier accompanied by a pump signal the output spectrum is compared with a desired spectrum. At different temperatures different measures of tilt or curvature are present at the output port of the amplifier in the presence of an input signal at the input port. Feedback related to the measure of tilt or curvature of at least one of the plurality of different temperatures is provided in the form of a feedback signal or an information signal.

Temperature tuning an optical amplifier

This invention relates to invention relates to a variable slope optical filter in the form of a Fabry-Per&ocirc;t etalon having an end face with a variable finesse. A method for filtering and a variable slope optical filter for in-line use with an optical amplifier signal is also disclosed. The filter has a wavelength response that is substantially linear in slope within a band of operation wavelengths of the amplifier; the slope of the filter in an operating band of wavelengths is between zero and a only one of a positive or negative number; furthermore the filter has an amplitude response that has an opposite and counter slope as a function of wavelength to that of a gain tilt of the amplifier within the operation band of wavelengths. Relative movement between the filter and the optical amplifier signal is provided to vary the slope of the filter by means of varying the amplitude wavelength response of the filter.

Optical filter for use or with an optical amplifier

The traditional solution to monitoring the pump laser power uses the back facet of the pump laser to monitor its power. However, stability and aging issues of the back facet may make it difficult or even impossible to measure the pump power to a high degree of accuracy using this method. Pump lasers often use fiber Bragg gratings to stabilize their wavelength. However, if an in-line optical fiber blazed Bragg grating is used, then the pump power is coupled out of the grating to a detector and monitored. The method of the present invention minimizes components and provides a direct monitoring of fiber coupled power. Alternatively, light coupled out of a WDM is used in a similar manner to monitor the pump power.

A method and apparatus of generating a test signal for broadcast to a plurality of locations for testing optical devices is disclosed. A tunable laser sweeps from a lower wavelength to a higher upper wavelength providing a test station with a variable input signal. A timing signal generated from the variable input signal is provided to the test station to determine the frequency of the variable input signal so that tests may be performed at several known wavelengths. Amplification is added to the system to provide sufficient power to the variable input signal and timing signal both split by a splitter to be provided to multiple test stations simultaneously.
