A process to form a generally rigid cushion package from loose fill dunnage material. The loose fill dunnage material is particles of cellular thermoplastic or thermosetting material. The process involves surrounding, within a second packaging enclosure, the article to be packaged with an amount of loose fill dunnage material. The second packaging enclosure is placed in a first packaging enclosure. The second packaging enclosure has an original volume greater than internal volume of the first packaging enclosure. An internal vacuum is created in the second packaging enclosure causing the original volume of material therein to decrease below the internal volume of the first packaging enclosure. The first packaging enclosure is sealed and the vacuum within the second packaging enclosure released.

Process to form generally rigid cushion packages from loose fill dunnage

Layers of heat sealable material are pressed between opposed jaws, cut through, and simultaneously the edges along each side of the cut line are sealed using an improved impulse sealer and method wherein a narrow, internal cooling vein(s) or channel(s), defined near the working interface of the jaws, is cooled by a pressurized stream of refrigerated gas to provide forced cooling to the sealed edges during the cooling portion of the sealing cycle.

Impulse sealer

A metal-plastic-metal structural laminate which can be formed into various useful articles having compound curves using conventional metal forming techniques. The laminate comprises two metal skin layers and a centrally disposed polymer layer comprising a core layer, and optionally first and second adhesive layers. Each metal skin layer is 2 to 20 mils, the ratio of the core thickness to skin thickness is less than 9:1 and the total laminate thickness is 5 to 65 mils. The laminate can be bent to 90.degree. to a critical radius, the distance between the pivot point and the inner skin surface of the laminate, without metal rupture.

Formable metal-plastic-metal structural laminates

A packaging machine is provided in which wire is fed for cutting into predetermined lengths for subsequent formation into U-shaped clips for clinching about a constricted product filled tube. It includes means for varying the length of the cut off portion by adjusting the position of a cut off knife along the wire against the biasing action of a cooperating wire receiving member or cut off round.

Impulse sealing apparatus having a forced cooling cycle following the impulse heating cycle, and comprising in combination, a vortex tube which converts a source of compressed gas at ambient temperature into a cold gas stream, a heat exchanger cooled by the cold gas stream generated by the vortex tube, a second source of pressurized ambient temperature gas communicating with the heat exchanger and cooled thereby, and means for removing the second source gas stream from the heat exchanger and communicating with the impulse sealer for supplying chilled gas thereto.
