A compound having the formula wherein R, Z, and the carbonyl can be comprised by a common ring, wherein Rcomprises a chromophore that absorbs light from the visible wavelength range, and wherein n is an integer of at least 12. A solid phase change ink composition is also disclosed containing a colorant comprising a chromophore that absorbs light from the visible wavelength range and has the formula wherein R, Z, and the carbonyl can be comprised by a common ring, and wherein n is an integer of at least 12. Also disclosed is a method of forming a colorant wherein a first compound having the formula is reacted with a second compound having the formula Z(CH)CHwherein n is an integer of at least 12 to form a third compound having the formula wherein the third compound comprises a chromophore that absorbs light from the visible wavelength range.

Phase change ink formulations, colorant formulations, and methods of forming colorants

A method of operating a printer turns off a support structure heater when the printer enters standby mode. The print head is then moved away from an intermediate transfer surface supported by a support structure. Heat settings used to heat a print head are then varied to heat the print head and the support structure. Another method of operating a printer turns off a support structure heater when the printer enters standby mode and holds a print head adjacent to an intermediate transfer surface while the printer is in standby mode.

Faster warm-up, lower energy, and quieter modes for solid ink printers

Disclosed is a colorant composition of the formula wherein R is an alkyl group, an aryl group, an arylalkyl group, or an alkylaryl group, and wherein R can be joined to the phenyl moiety to form a ring, R' is an aromatic- or heteroaromatic-containing group, each R, independently of the others, is a halogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, a nitrile group, a nitro group, an amide group, or a sulfonamide group, w is an integer of 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, n is an integer representing the number of carbon atoms in each repeat alkylene oxide unit, and x is an integer representing the number of repeat alkylene oxide units, wherein said colorant has no more than one &#x2014;OH, &#x2014;SH, or primary or secondary amino group per molecule.

Colorant compositions

An ink stick for use in a phase change ink printer includes a first portion of a solid ink stick body, the first portion being formed of a first material of a phase change ink composition. The ink stick also includes a second portion of the solid ink stick body, the second portion being formed of a second material. The first material and the second material combine when the ink stick body is melted.

Colorant compounds

Disclosed is a phase change ink composition including an ink carrier and a colorant, said ink being suitable for use in an indirect printing process wherein the ink is jetted from a printhead onto a heated intermediate transfer member and subsequently transferred from the intermediate transfer member to a final recording substrate, wherein: (a) the ink exhibits the characteristic of being jetted from the printhead onto the intermediate transfer member when the ink at a temperature of about 125&#xb0; C. or lower; (b) the ink exhibits the characteristic of being jetted without purging from a printer maintained at a standby temperature of about 100&#xb0; C. or lower; and (c) the ink has a cohesive failure temperature of at least about 56&#xb0; C.

Disclosed is a phase change ink comprising a colorant, an initiator, and a phase change ink carrier, said carrier comprising (A) a urethane which is the reaction product of a mixture comprising (1) an isocyanate; and (2) an alcohol selected from the group consisting of 1,4 butanediol vinyl ether, 2-allyloxy ethanol, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol vinyl ether, ethylene glycol vinyl ether, di(ethylene glycol) vinyl ether, and mixtures thereof; (B) a compound which is the reaction product of a mixture comprising (1) an isocyanate; and (2) a component comprising (a) an amine having at least one ethylenic unsaturation; (b) an acid having at least one ethylenic unsaturation; (c) a mixture of an amine having at least one ethylenic unsaturation and an alcohol having at least one ethylenic unsaturation; (d) a mixture of an acid having at least one ethylenic unsaturation and an alcohol having at least one ethylenic unsaturation; or (e) mixtures thereof; or (C) a mixture of (A) and (B); said ink being curable upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

Phase change inks containing curable isocyanate-derived compounds

Phase change ink carrier compositions comprising an admixture of (1) at least one urethane resin; and/or (2) at least one mixed urethane/urea resin; and/or (3) at least one mono-amide; and/or (4) at least one polyethylene wax are provided. In addition, a phase change colored ink of such carrier compositions comprising a phase change ink compatible colorant are also provided. Embodiments of the present invention also include methods for producing a layer of the above phase change colored ink on the surface of a substrate by either direct or indirect printing. Such methods also encompassing using a polyethylene wax as an overcoat layer above such a phase change ink layer on a printed substrate.

Phase change ink formulation containing a combination of a urethane resin, a mixed urethane/urearesin, a mono-amide and a polyethylene wax

Disclosed is an ink composition comprising (a) an aqueous liquid vehicle, and (b) a colorant which comprises an anhydride copolymer having at least one chromogen covalently bonded thereto and at least one ester, amide, imide, or thioester group covalently bonded thereto, said colorant being soluble or dispersible in the aqueous liquid vehicle. Also disclosed is an ink composition comprising (a) an aqueous liquid vehicle, and (b) a colorant which is the reaction product of (1) an anhydride copolymer, (2) a chromogen having one and only one group per molecule selected from the group consisting of &#x2014;OH, &#x2014;SH, primary amino, and secondary amino, and (3) a material selected from the group consisting of nonchromogenic monofunctional alcohols, nonchromogenic monofunctional thiols, nonchromogenic monofunctional primary or secondary amines, and mixtures thereof, said colorant being soluble or dispersible in the aqueous liquid vehicle.
