A fastener magazine of a fastening device may include a track defining an elongated channel with a dispensing end at which fasteners are dispensed from the magazine. A runner positioned in the track may include a release member that projects outward from an outer surface of the runner. A pusher may be positioned in the track and coupled to the runner such that the pusher exerts a force in a direction toward the dispensing end of the track on the fasteners when the runner is in a closed position. A retention member that is attached to a side wall of the track can engage the pusher through an aperture in the track to prevent the pusher from contacting the fasteners until the runner has reached a desired position in the track. The release member can contact the retention member to disengage the retention member from the pusher.

A fastening tool includes an actuation device configured to actuate a drive engine of the tool to initiate a drive stroke. The actuation device includes a contact trip assembly operatively connected to the movable portion of the nose assembly. The contact trip assembly a lower contact arm connected to the movable portion of the nose assembly biased in the retracted position and movable to the extended position with the moveable portion of the nose assembly, and an upper contact arm operatively connected to the lower contact arm. The actuation device includes a trigger assembly that includes a trigger, a trigger arm pivotally supported by the trigger and configured to interact with the upper contact arm, and a check pawl configured to engage an opening in the upper contact arm when the upper contact arm moves downward to prevent the tool from being operated in a contact trip mode.

A fastener driving device includes a frame, a fastener driver reciprocally mounted in the frame, and a trigger assembly. The trigger assembly includes a trigger lever configured to be moved to an actuated position to actuate the fastener driving device, a mode selector rotatably mounted to the frame, the mode selector being configured to move to select a mode of operation of the fastener driving device, and a trigger lock mounted to the frame, the trigger lock being movable between a first position wherein actuation of the trigger lever is permitted and a second position wherein actuation of the trigger lever is prevented. In the first position, the trigger lock engages the mode selector to prevent the mode selector from moving. In the second position, the trigger lock disengages the mode selector to permit movement of the mode selector to select the mode of operation of the fastener driving device.

A method for operating a fastener driving device is disclosed. The method includes moving an input actuator of an actuating assembly into an operative position in response to movement of a contact trip assembly and a trigger member into the operative positions thereof. The contract trip assembly includes an output actuator. The method also includes moving an actuating member with respect to the trigger member between a first position and a second position, and moving a mode selecting member together with the actuating member relative to the trigger member between the first and second positions of the actuating member, and relatively moving the mode selecting member with respect to the actuating member.

Method for driving a fastener with a fastener driving device having an automatic dual-mode trigger assembly

A fastener driving device includes a trigger assembly operatively disposed between a contact trip assembly and an actuating assembly. The trigger assembly includes a trigger member, an actuating member, and an automatic mode selecting mechanism. The mode selecting mechanism includes a mode selecting member having a connection with the actuating member to make the mode selecting member () move with the actuating member between first and second positions of the actuating member, and () have relative movement with respect to the actuating member so that the mode selecting mechanism (a) retains the actuating member in the first position in response to an initial movement of the trigger member to the operative position, and (b) retains the actuating member in the second position in response to an initial movement of the contact trip assembly into the operative position and a subsequent movement of the trigger member into the operative position.

Fastener driving device with automatic dual-mode trigger assembly

A fastener driving device including a sequential activating arrangement in which an enabling member has one end pivotally connected to a trigger member, an opposite end operatively associated with an upper end of an upper structure of a work contact assembly and a central portion disposed below a lower end of an actuating member. When the enabling member and trigger member are in the inoperative limiting positions, thereof movement of the upper structure from the inoperative position thereof into the operative position thereof will move the opposite end of said enabling member through a first arcuate path into a first position. When in the first position, the enabling member is moved into a second position in response to the manual movement of the trigger member into the operative limiting position thereof during which the actuating member is moved into the operative position thereof. The enabling member is retained in the second position thereof so long as the trigger member and upper structure are retained in the operative limiting positions thereof. When in the second position, the enabling member is moved through a second arcuate path into a third position in response to the movement of the upper structure into the inoperative position therewith either by virtue of the normal rebound of the device at firing or by a manual movement of the device away from the workpiece.

Fastener driving device with enhanced sequential actuation

A fastener driving device including a fastener depth adjusting assembly comprising a rotary adjusting member having an internal threaded section extending along an axis threadedly mounted on one of an upper and lower structures of a work contact assembly so that a rotational movement of the adjusting member with respect to the one structure effects a relative axial movement therebetween. Mounting structure is provided between another of the upper and lower structures and the adjusting member to mount the adjusting member on the another structure so as to be freely rotatable about the axis while being restrained against axial movement with respect thereto. The mounting structure positions the adjusting member so as to present an exterior surface in an accessible exterior position on a frame structure of the device. The exterior surface has a shape facilitating manual rotational movement of the adjusting member by a manual rolling action thereof. A yieldable holding member is mounted on the another structure for linear movement toward and away from the exterior surface of the adjusting member while being restrained against axial movement with respect thereto. The yieldable holding member is spring biased to continuously engage the exterior surface of the adjusting member. The yieldable holding member is constructed and arranged with respect to the exterior surface configuration of the adjusting member to continuously yieldably hold the adjusting member in a selected one of a series of rotational positions against free rotational movement in either direction while allowing manual rotational movements against the spring bias of the yieldable holding member in either direction with generally equal manual effort.

Fastener driving device with enhanced depth adjusting assembly

A pneumatically operated fastener driving device is provided including an inlet head valve structure mounted within a housing for movement between (1) a closed position sealing a piston chamber from communication with a main air pressure reservoir and (2) an open position enabling the main air pressure reservoir to communicate with the piston chamber, and an outlet head valve structure mounted within the housing for movement separate from the inlet head valve structure between (1) a closed position sealing the piston chamber from communication with an exhaust opening and (2) an open position enabling the piston chamber to communicate with the exhaust opening. The inlet and outlet head valve structures include first and second reservoir pressure responsive surfaces respectively. The inlet and outlet head valve structures include first and second pilot pressure responsive surfaces disposed in opposing relation to the reservoir pressure responsive surfaces respectively and in continuous communicating relation to the pressure within a pilot pressure chamber so as to bias the inlet head valve structure to move in an opposite direction toward its closed position and the outlet head valve structure to move in the same opposite direction toward its open position. A spring is provided to bias the inlet head valve structure so it (1) moves to its open position after movement of the outlet valve to its closed position in one direction and (2) moves to its closed position prior to movement of the outlet valve structure to its open position in an opposite direction.
