A camshaft phaser arrangement configured for a concentric camshaft assembly having inner and outer camshafts is provided. The camshaft phaser arrangement includes a first camshaft phaser, a second camshaft phaser, a coupling, and at least one timing wheel connected to at least one of the first or second camshaft phaser. Each of the camshaft phasers is configured to be connected to either the inner or the outer camshaft. The coupling includes a coupling ring and at least one coupling pin that torsionally connects the first camshaft phaser to the second camshaft phaser. The coupling provides for radial and axial movement between the first camshaft phaser and the second camshaft phaser.

A camshaft phaser arrangement configured for a concentric camshaft assembly having an inner camshaft and an outer camshaft is provided. The camshaft phaser arrangement can facilitate independent phasing of intake and exhaust valves. The camshaft phaser arrangement includes a first driven wheel and a second driven wheel, both configured to be driven by a driving wheel. A first camshaft phaser is connected to the first driven wheel and configured to be connected to either the inner or outer camshaft. A second camshaft phaser is connected to the second driven wheel and configured to be connected to either the inner or outer camshaft which is not connected to the first driven wheel. A motion transfer assembly can connect the second camshaft phaser to the concentric camshaft assembly. One or both of the camshaft phasers can be an electric camshaft phaser or a hydraulic camshaft phaser.

A fast acting valve train system for valve deactivation is provided that includes an actuator together with a switchable rocker arm. The actuator, controlled by the engine control unit and mounted to a structural housing, contains an actuator pin that retracts or extends facilitating either a deactivation or reactivation valve event. The switchable rocker arm is a two arm design that includes cam side and valve side arms that are coupled together with a locking mechanism assembly that interfaces with the actuator pin. The system is capable of fast switching times to meet the increased demands of cylinder deactivation systems.

A hydraulic valve play compensating element for generating valve play compensation for a gas exchange valve in a valve operating mechanism of an internal combustion engine, having a piston housing in which a piston, which is elastically supported against the piston housing via a piston spring, is guided in a movable fashion, in which the piston has a low-pressure space which is connected via an axial opening in a piston head to a high-pressure space which is enclosed by the piston housing, and having a control valve which has at least one control valve closing element which can bear in a seal-forming fashion against a valve seat, the letter surrounding the axial opening on a piston head underside, and comprises a control valve spring which is preloaded in the opening direction, wherein, in the event of a collapsing movement between the piston and the piston housing when the gas exchange valve is actuated, the control valve closing element can be acted on hydraulically in the closing direction by means of a build-up of pressure in the high-pressure space wherein the control valve spring is embodied as a spring element which is arranged in the high-pressure space, is radially spaced apart from the axial opening and from the control valve closing element and is supported between the piston head underside and a control valve holding element which is guided in the high-pressure space in an axially movable fashion with a delimited actuating travel, holds the control valve closing element and is provided with an oil passage.

A switchable cam follower () is proposed which serves to transmit a cam stroke in a variable manner from a cam to valve timing mechanism elements of an internal combustion engine. The cam follower () comprises substantially a cylindrical inner part () and a cylindrical outer part () which can be displaced into one another in the direction of their longitudinal axes and can be locked and unlocked in a relative position by means of coupling means () which are preferably actuated by pressure-modulated hydraulic medium, and also comprises at least one spring means () which is arranged between the inner part () and the outer part (). The inner part () has a run-on surface () for the cam at one end side () and is radially guided in an inner wall () of the outer part () by way of an outer circumferential surface (). The outer part () has an outer cylindrical circumferential surface (), by way of which the cam follower () is guided in a housing hole of the internal combustion engine in a longitudinally movable manner, and an outer end face () facing away from the cam, as a contact face for valve timing mechanism elements which are operatively connected to the cam follower (). A servo motor operated rotary air throttle has a driving member connected to the throttle shaft. The motor rotor is connected to the driving member in a lost motion connection. If the throttle is lodged due to ice formation, the motor rotor acquires rotary momentum relative to the driving member during the lost motion rotation and a projection on the rotor impacts the end of a slot in the driving member to impart a momentum pulse to the driving member and throttle shaft and dislodge the throttle.

Transducer housing for mounting in a port in an engine combustion chamber has a metal diaphragm exposed to the combustion gasses. The pressure of the combustion gasses is transferred through an aluminum coupling disc which deflects a simply supported beam member. The beam member is formed of refractory material having epitaxially grown crystalline piezoresistors formed on one surface of the beam member and connected in a bridge circuit and is secured to a ceramic mounting disc. The aluminum coupling disc has a relatively high coefficient of thermal expansion which maintains a preload on the beam member for improved accuracy in spite of the low thermal expansion of the ceramic mounting disc. In an alternate embodiment, an expansion ring made of a material having a relatively high coefficient of thermal expansion is used to support a mounting disc on which the beam member is supported. The high expansion rate of the expansion ring maintains a preload between the beam member and a cup diaphragm by compensating for the relatively low expansion of the ceramic mounting disc.

A misfire detection system and method for use in conjunction with an internal combustion engine. An engine cylinder has a pressure sensor disposed therein for providing a signal indicative of the pressure in the cylinder's combustion chamber. Compression pressure measurements are obtained at crankshaft angles reached prior to the top dead center position of piston travel. For crankshaft angles greater than that at which top dead center is reached, the pressure measurements are reflected about a vertical axis extending through the top dead center point. The reflected compression pressures for crankshaft angles reached after the top dead center point are subtracted from the actual compression chamber measurements obtained over those crankshaft angles during the power stroke of the engine. The difference values are integrated over a range of crankshaft angles to produce a difference pressure integral which is normalized through multiplication by an optional factor and then subsequent division by the maximum pressure occurring in the compression chamber during the engine's power stroke. The resulting normalized integral value is compared to a threshold, below which partial or complete engine misfire is presumed.

A transducer housing for mounting a port in a combustion chamber has a metal diaphragm exposed to the combustion gasses. The pressure of the combustion gasses deflects the diaphragm which locally deflects a simply supported beam. The beam is formed of refractory material having epitaxially grown crystalline piezoresistors formed on one surface of the beam and connected in a bridge circuit. Noble metal foil leads connect to the piezoresistors to form the bridge and provide attachment pads. The pads are noble metal welded to other noble metal foil pads provided on a ceramic substrate to form a sensor subassembly for mounting adjacent the diaphragm to form a transducer.
