Improved control for the separation of waste materials, or materials having waste components, is provided by the injection of air, or other gas bubbles, into a water-filled tank while simultaneously depositing the waste containing material to be separated onto the top of the water. This method is especially useful where both portions of some or all of the materials to be separated from each other have specific gravities greater than that of pure water. The rapidly rising air bubbles provide turbulence and buoyancy to materials that are slightly heavier than water, such as water-soaked organic products, but do not prevent heavier materials, such as sand and metals from sinking. An apparatus is described which allows for the removal of both the floating and sinking fractions from the floatation tank. The cleaner separation provided by this method increase the value of both fractions for a variety of beneficial uses including manufactured products, a renewable-resource fuel which will reduce the generation of greenhouse gases, chemical product feedstock and compost.

System for separating waste materials by enhanced water floatation

A trailer hitch positioning apparatus directs the driver of a pickup truck or other towing vehicle during backing up to a trailer or other towed vehicle for hitching the coupling elements of the vehicles together. The apparatus includes an infrared light unit mounted on the trailer for transmitting a first collimated light beam of a predetermined horizontal width toward the vehicle. A support bar mounted to the rear of the vehicle carries a plurality of infrared alignment sensors for detecting the first beam and hence when the truck is aligned with the trailer. A position emitter mounted on the trailer emits a second focused infrared light beam that is detected by a position sensor on the truck when the coupling elements of the vehicles are in position to be hitched together. An indicator coupled to the alignment sensors and to the position sensor indicates the direction of turning the steering wheel in the event of misalignment of the vehicles and also indicate when the vehicles are positioned to be hitched together.

In order to make large panels of expanded thermoformable material in a process in which a blank of the material is placed between two heated mold plates, the blank adhered to the plates by hot tack adhesion; the plates separated and the expanded material cooled, while maintaining commercial tolerances, the mold plates are supported on elongated mounting studs.
