The relative speed of the tires of a vehicle is monitored as an indication of the operating state of the vehicle, wherein if the vehicle is not operating in one of a number of predetermined states, the relative speed is monitored as an indication of relative pressure of the vehicle tires, and further wherein differences in relative speed not related to the predetermined states, and not related to differences in relative pressure, are accounted for.

A rocker arm in an internal combustion engine is pivotably supported by a fixed fulcrum retainer with a rocker key operatively positioned therebetween. The rocker arm and fulcrum retainer each have a concave, semi-cylindrical bearing surface and the rocker key has a pair of spaced apart, opposed convex, semi-cylindrical bearing surfaces, the concave, semi-cylindrical bearing surfaces and associate convex, semi-cylindrical bearing surfaces having radii ratios on the order of 1.7:1 to 3:1 and preferably 2:1 whereby to effect substantial rolling contact of these elements relative to each other. In addition, the rocker arm is preferably of U-shaped configuration as defined by a base with side walls depending from opposite sides thereof. A roller follower is operatively and rotatably positioned between the side walls at one end of the rocker arm, with the roller follower having an outer peripheral surface of a diameter whereby the outer peripheral surface is in rolling contact with the base and an associate element of the valve train at this end of the rocker arm. A roller support shaft is operatively associated with the side walls and with the roller follower to loosely retain the roller follower in unit assembly with the rocker arm.

In a fuel injection system having an injector which delivers fuel to an engine in discrete injection events, a valve assembly shuts off fuel flow to the injector if the fuel flow during an injection event exceeds a desired upper limit.

An engine cooling-passenger heating system is disclosed having an integrated multi-mode valve arrangement which operates in a no-heat mode to bypass all available flow to the passenger heater past the heater for continued circulation without disruption in the engine cooling system and further operates in a heat mode to effect flow through the heater while also being responsive to the pressure drop across the heater above a predetermined value to also simultaneously establish in the heat mode a restricted connection bypassing a portion of the available coolant to the heater to thereby limit the flow through the heater as well as the pressure differential acting thereon.

An electromagnetic diesel fuel injector of the type that is continuously supplied with pressurized fuel and having a pressure actuated injection nozzle at one end thereof is provided with a solenoid actuated spool valve means that is operative to selectively effect communication of the injection nozzle either with the pressurized fuel when the solenoid is energized or to a low pressure fuel drain conduit means when the solenoid is de-energized.

A diaphragm actuated-rod operated valve assembly adapted for installation in a fluid flow is disclosed comprising a one-piece elastomeric valve-spring-seal member which is operated by the push rod and has only a static seal and in addition is provided with internal support such as to prevent an otherwise collapsible portion of the valve from grabbing the operating rod as a result of external pressure and thereby inhibiting valve operation.

A pressure control valve assembly includes a valve housing having a spring loaded, resilient valve element with reversely curved conical surfaces thereon one of which is seated on a fixed, annular pressure relief seat by a first spring element and the other of which is seated against a spring biased ball check valve that controls flow through a central opening in the valve element defining a vacuum relief path.

In an assembly of two members that are threadably secured and have opposed radially extending sealing surfaces that may experience forced relative tilting there is provided an elastomeric sealing ring that engages these surfaces and has a radially facing circumferential V-shape groove providing lips that are preloaded between the sealing surfaces but do not touch each other on application of a predetermined securing torque and then on forced relative tilting of the members which tends to unseat the ring at some circumferential location the lips at this location remain preloaded while flexing to maintain sealing while at the diametrically opposite location the lips are forced toward full contact.

A two piece torque release mechanism includes a metal cover having a peripheral flange with a plurality of circumferentially spaced, cam surfaces each including ramp and notch segments intersecting at a sharp radius point radially inwardly of a land segment; a plurality of integrally formed fingers on a driven member are sprung radially outwardly into operative engagement with the cam surfaces. Each finger has a sharp radius tip portion formed by the intersection of a flat radial surface and an inclined slip surface; the radial surfaces and notches define a positive interlock between the cover and the driven member for removing the driven member; the slip surfaces are mateable with the cam ramp segments to produce a torque release couple between the cover and the driven member to prevent overtightening of the driven member and to produce a reverse slip movement of each finger following torque release for parking the tip portions against the cam land segments so as to maintain the fingers in an unstressed position when the driven member is in place.

A pressure vacuum relief assembly for a container includes a housing with a first port in communication with the container and a second port in communication with atmosphere; the housing encloses improved vacuum and pressure relief valve means including first and second diaphragm members each having central openings therein engageable with conical surfaces on vacuum relief and pressure relief seal members; said first and second diaphragms form a control chamber in communication with the first port which is selectively pressurized to cause selective snap movement of each of the diaphragms to control flow across the seal members between atmosphere and the container.
