One example includes a self-synchronizing TDD antenna system. The system includes an antenna to communicate transmit and receive signals and an antenna circuit coupled to a user communication system via a transmission line cable. The antenna circuit includes a transmission line measurement circuit to determine signal loss through the transmission line cable and an amplitude adjustment circuit to adjust amplitude of the transmit and/or receive signals based on the determined signal loss. The antenna circuit also includes a transmit detection circuit to monitor signal power of the transmit signal, and a controller to switch the amplitude adjustment circuit from a receive mode to a transmit mode in response to the monitored signal power exceeding a predetermined threshold. In the receive mode, the adjustment circuit applies a receive amplitude adjustment to the receive signal, and in the transmit mode the adjustment circuit applies a transmit amplitude adjustment to the transmit signal.

Time-division duplex (TDD) antenna system

In one example, an antenna system is described. The antenna system includes a primary antenna on an aircraft. The primary antenna is mechanically steerable and has an asymmetric antenna beam pattern with a narrow beamwidth axis and a wide beamwidth axis at boresight. The antenna system also includes a secondary antenna on the aircraft, the secondary antenna including an array of antenna elements. The antenna system also includes an antenna selection system to control communication of a signal between the aircraft and a target satellite via the primary antenna and the secondary antenna. The antenna selection system switches communication of the signal from the primary antenna to the secondary antenna when a performance characteristic for communication with the target satellite satisfies a threshold due to a position of the aircraft relative to the target satellite.

Methods and systems for mitigating interference with a nearby satellite

Methods and systems are described for providing end-to-end beamforming. For example, end-to-end beamforming systems include end-to-end relays and ground networks to provide communications to user terminals located in user beam coverage areas. The ground segment can include geographically distributed access nodes and a central processing system. Return uplink signals, transmitted from the user terminals, have multipath induced by a plurality of receive/transmit signal paths in the end to end relay and are relayed to the ground network. The ground network, using beamformers, recovers user data streams transmitted by the user terminals from return downlink signals. The ground network, using beamformers generates forward uplink signals from appropriately weighted combinations of user data streams that, after relay by the end-end-end relay, produce forward downlink signals that combine to form user beams.

Methods, systems, and devices for a dual-polarized antenna array are described. An example antenna array may include a parallel plate polarizer that may include upper and lower plates. The antenna array may include stepped septums extending between the plates, each of the stepped septums having a first and second side surfaces, the stepped septums comprising first and second sets that are inverted relative to each other. The antenna array may include a first divided waveguides associated with a first polarization that may have a first set of opposing walls formed by first portions of the upper and lower plates and a second set of opposing walls. The antenna array may include second divided waveguides associated with a second polarization that may have a first set of opposing walls formed by second portions of the upper and lower plates and a second set of opposing walls.

In one embodiment, an antenna system is described. The antenna system includes a primary antenna on an aircraft. The antenna system also includes a secondary antenna on the aircraft, the secondary antenna including an array of antenna elements. The antenna system also includes an antenna selection system to control communication of a signal between the aircraft and a target satellite via the primary antenna and the secondary antenna. The antenna selection system switches communication of the signal from the primary antenna to the secondary antenna when an amount of interference with an adjacent satellite reaches a threshold due to the wide beamwidth axis of the asymmetric antenna beam pattern.

Disclosed is a shaped horn in conjunction with a dielectric tube for enhanced aperture directivity that can achieve a near optimum efficiency. The shaped horn provides additional mode control to provide an improved off-axis cross-polarization response. The horn shape can be individually optimized for isolated horns or for horns in a feed array. The feed array environment can produce results that lead to a different optimized shape than the isolated horn. Lower off axis cross-polarization can result in improved efficiency and susceptibility to interference.

Enhanced directivity feed and feed array

A substantially planar antenna configured for easy installation in a ceiling or ceiling tile. The antenna is configured for duplex communications in carrier frequency ranges spanning at least a 2:1 ratio of frequency values from the highest to the lowest frequency in the carrier frequency band, such as the frequency range from 800 to 960 MHz and 1700 to 2400 MHz, and within a coverage pattern below the ceiling extending through 360&#xb0; azimuth and 180&#xb0; elevation. The antennas are manufactured as a printed circuit board that snaps apart into a number of panels, which each contains at least a planar antenna element and a cross brace that are used to assemble the antenna. The printed circuit board is a dielectric substrate carrying printed conductor including a radiating circular monopole disc radiating element, associated transmission signal paths, and printed indicia that typically include assembly instructions and a logo. The printed circuit board sheet configuration makes the antennas inexpensive to mass produce and easy to snap apart into individual units, which are themselves self-contained, easy to snap apart and install.
