A reel containing first and second spaced-apart flanges, a first tubular member disposed between and attached to the first and second flanges at a point spaced apart from the free edges of the flanges so that the first tubular member and a portion of the flanges partially delimit a first space; a second tubular member coaxially disposed inside of, spaced apart from the first tubular member and affixed to the flanges, the first and second tubular members and the spaced apart flanges delimiting a second space; and, an aperture in at least one of the flanges, communicating with the first and second spaces.

Disclosed is a compensating cable adapted to be used in combination with an elevator cab, counterweight, hoist rope and traveling cable. The compensating cable is composed of a sheath, at least one elongated strength member such as a link chain or stranded wire rope, made from metal or other materials of high tensile strength disposed in the sheath and the volume of the sheath not otherwise occupied by the strength member substantially occupied by a mixture of metal particles and plastic.

An elevator compensating cable which has an elongated plastic tube shaped member which delimits a predetermined volume. Disposed within the predetermined volume are: (a) at least one elongated member; (b) an elongated means made from a mixture of metal particles of plastic; and (c) a plurality of elongated fibers adapted to move relative to one another, the strength member, and the elongated plastic tube shaped member, having a coefficient of elongation of not more than 30% and a coefficient of friction relative to all surrounding materials of not less than 0.3.

A flat type feeder cable useful for transmitting electrical energy from a stationary source to a moving apparatus, which has a plurality of spaced apart strength members each with their respective axes arranged in a line and in substantially coplanar relationship with one another; a plurality of strand members stranded together about each of the strength members to form a core, the strand members themselves being composed of a plurality of electrical conductors circumscribed by a sheath, and are 'S-Z' stranded so that they contain first and second alternatingly repeating substantially equal first and second sections, each of said first sections having a common direction and degree of lay and each of said second sections also having a common direction and degree of lay substantially equal opposite to that of the first sections, and, a jacket of flexible material circumscribing the core members.
