Provided is a fastener element for securing a curing blanket over the open upper end of a concrete form. The fastener element comprises a wire body including a central portion extending laterally for at least the distance of the width of the concrete form and a pair of attachment portions at opposite ends of the central portion. The attachment portions secure the fastener element to the outer walls of the concrete form.

A thermally insulative and waterproof barrier for protecting an exterior surface includes a plurality of generally rectangular flexible blankets in overlapping disposition. Each blanket defines a body and a peripheral margin about edges of the body, edges of the bodies of adjacent blankets (including the base layer) overlapping. Each body includes at least one base layer of thermal insulation and two cover layers of waterproof material. The cover layers are sealed together peripherally about the base layer to form the peripheral margin and exclude water from the base layer.

An insulation damming device formed from a moisture-proof and fire-retardant material for preventing the build up of thermal insulation around a recessed lighting fixture, fan or other heat producing device is installed in an attic. The device is formed from a vented cover member, a set of vented side panels and a set of mounting flaps. The vents are disposed at regular intervals along the side panels and cover to allow heat and moisture to escape from the enclosed area. Additionally, the vents can be covered with louvers to insure that no insulation enters the area enclosed by the insulation damming device.

An insulation confining shield and application method, the shield mountable between elongated structural framing members in an unfinished wall or ceiling for insulation dispensed as curable liquid having a blowing agent or an insulation material with a curable adhesive, comprising: a sheet of elongated semi-rigid or rigid material having a center web section and a pair of opposed flanges extending substantially perpendicular from the center web section defining an insulation confining volume, the web section and the flanges being constructed and arranged to fit between the structural framing members in the wall or ceiling to retain the insulation when cured after being applied against the web section and the flanges, in one embodiment, the flanges having a plurality of vent apertures defined therethrough to enable a quantity of the insulation, when applied, to migrate from the insulation confining volume to an area outside of the confining volume and adhere to a portion of the structural framing members to mitigate heat transfer through the structural framing members, in another embodiment, the insulation confining shield being positioned relative to the structural framing members and having larger vent apertures to enable insulation to adhere to the sides of the structural framing members through the flanges, the insulation confining shield and application method enabling insulation to be applied prior to closing off either side of an unfinished wall or ceiling.

An automatic sample testing machine for testing samples stored in test cards. The machine has a test sample positioning system for moving a tray containing a plurality of test sample cards and fluid receptacles among various stations in the machine. The machine has a diluting station for adding a predetermined quantity of diluent to the receptacles as needed. A pipetting station transfers fluid from one receptacle to another. A vacuum station is provided having a vacuum chamber moveable relative to the tray between upper and lower positions. The chamber cooperates with the tray to make a sealing engagement with the top surface of the tray when it is lowered to the lower position. A vacuum generator supplies vacuum to the chamber. When the vacuum is released from the chamber, the fluid samples are loaded into the cards from the receptacles. The test sample positioning system moves the tray to a cutting and sealing station and then to an incubation station and loads the cards one at a time into a carousel within the incubation station. A test card transport station transports the test cards from the incubation station to an optical reading station, where optical measurements (e.g., transmittance and/or fluorescence optical testing) is conducted on the wells of the card. When the card has been read, it is either moved back to the incubation station for additional incubation and reading or transferred to a card disposal system when the reading is complete.

A diluting station and a pipetting station for a machine such as a biological sample testing machine. The diluting station has a rotating shot tube that fills with diluent without the need for priming when the shot tube is in a vertically inclined orientation, and which dispenses the diluent into a receptacle when the shot tube is rotated to a downward orientation. A thimble valve is placed in the shot tube to control the flow of diluent into the valve. The pipetting station includes a cylindrical housing storing a plurality of straws and a concentric rotating drum that sweeps a straw into a straw withdrawal slot. A tubular tapered transfer pin is inserted into the straw frictional into engagement with the straw. The tubular transfer pin rotates the straw out of the slot into a generally downward orientation towards a receptacle containing a fluid. The pin and straw are lowered so as to place the end of the straw into the fluid. The fluid is withdrawn into the straw by means of vacuum applied to the tubular tapered transfer pin. The pin and straw are then raised out of the fluid. The fluid can then be deposited into a second receptacle that is moved below the straw and transfer pin by lowering the straw into the second receptacle and releasing the vacuum.

A utility meter reading and communications system gathers data from utility meters and sends that data to a utility company's central data collection point (host computer) via phone lines. The system places a call on the user's telephone line at a specified time and date and transmits data using dual-tone multifrequency (DTMF) format. The system ensures that users still may use the telephone line by sensing off-hook conditions initiated by a resident's telephone and immediately dropping the line to reestablish dial tone for the residential customer. The system uses a variety of error-detection procedures and communications protocols to ensure a high degree of reliability in communicating data to and from the central office and the utility meter system. The system also uses communications protocols and handshaking to ensure accurate data communication and allow immediate interruptions of communications should the customer attempt to use the telephone line.
