A modular containment system for mounting within a cargo container, the system having a pair of opposing retaining members, transverse members such as beams engaging the retaining members, and adapters interlocked with the retaining members. The adapters are designed to secure the system within recesses in opposing walls of the container, and may have several configurations depending on the method of securing. The system is installed in selected portions of the recesses to secure the cargo at the rear end of the container, or at other locations forward of the rear end.

Modular containment system

A hatch cover arrangement for a railroad car or the like and method of making the same as well as a railroad car utilizing such hatch cover arrangement are provided, the hatch cover arrangement comprising the combination of a hatch cover and a holddown bar for the hatch cover. The holddown bar has opposed ends one of which is adapted to be pivotally mounted to the car and the other of which is adapted to be releasably latched to the car while a medial portion thereof intermediate the opposed ends thereof extends transversely across the hatch cover, the holddown bar and the hatch cover comprising a one-piece homogeneous member formed of polymeric material.

Railroad hatch cover having an integral holddown bar therefor

A holddown bar for a hatch cover of a railroad car or the like and having opposed ends one of which is adapted to be pivotally mounted to the car and the other of which is adapted to be releasably latched to the car while a medial portion thereof intermediate the opposed ends is adapted to extend across the hatch cover and carries a sealing gasket in a channel thereof that is adapted to engage against the hatch cover. The channel is defined by a surface of the holddown bar and the gasket is secured to the surface by adhesive disposed between the surface and the gasket and being directly secured to the gasket and to the surface by the adhesive characteristics of the adhesive. An interlocking member is carried by the holddown bar and has a first part thereof mechanically interlocked to the holddown bar and a second part thereof mechanically interlocked to the adhesive to thereby mechanically interlock the adhesive to the holddown bar.

Method of making a holddown bar for a hatch cover of a railroad car

The present invention relates to a hatch cover for hopper cars, the hatch cover being made substantially of polymeric materials. The hatch cover of the invention comprises a lid having an inside and outside surface, a rim defining the edges of the inside surface, and a locking arm fixedly attached to the outside surface. A flat piece of metal is embedded in the lid having its geometric center substantially coincident with the geometric center of the lid to provide reinforcement therefor. The locking arm is reinforced with a steel channel for rigidity. The locking arm is attached to the lid using a single bolt which connects the channel of the locking arm with the flat piece of metal of the lid. A method of making the hatch cover is provided which comprises making the lid and the locking arm in the desired shape by reaction injection molding a polymeric material around the flat piece of metal and the channel respectively.

Hatch cover for hopper cars

A holddown bar for a hatch cover of a railroad car or the like is provided, the holddown bar having opposed ends one of which has a hinge unit that is adapted to be pivotally mounted to the car and the other of which has a latch unit that is adapted to be releasably latched to the car while a medial portion thereof intermediate the opposed ends is adapted to extend across the hatch cover and carries a sealing gasket in a channel thereof that is adapted to engage against the hatch cover. The opposed ends and medial portion of the holddown bar comprise a one-piece member formed of a relatively rigid polymeric material and has a reinforcing unit therein. The reinforcing unit comprises a substantially rigid member disposed in the polymeric material and having opposed ends one of which comprises the hinge unit for the holddown bar and the other of which is disposed in at least part of the polymeric material that defines the latch unit of the holddown bar, the rigid member having a medial portion extending between the ends thereof and being disposed in the polymeric material that defines the medial portion of the holddown bar.

Holddown bar for a hatch cover of a railroad car

A hatch cover arrangement for a railroad car or the like and a railroad car utilizing such hatch cover arrangement are provided, the hatch cover arrangement comprising the combination of a hatch cover and a holddown bar for the hatch cover. The holddown bar has opposed ends one of which is adapted to be pivotally mounted to the car and the other of which is adapted to be releasably latched to the car while a medial portion thereof intermediate the opposed ends thereof extends transversely across the hatch cover, the holddown bar and the hatch cover comprising a one-piece homogeneous member formed of polymeric material.

A holddown bar for a hatch cover of a railroad car or the like and a railroad car utilizing such a holddown bar are provided, the holddown bar having opposed sides and opposed ends one of which is adapted to be pivotally mounted to the car and the other of which is adapted to be releasably latched to the car while a medial portion thereof intermediate the opposed ends is adapted to extend across the hatch cover and carries a sealing gasket in a channel thereof that is adapted to engage against the hatch cover, the holddown bar having a rain shield secured to one of the opposed sides thereof at the medial portion and opposed ends thereof so as to be adapted to be disposed adjacent and outboard of an end of the hatch cover for protecting the same from the elements. The rain shield comprises a one-piece member formed of a relatively flexible polymeric material.

A holddown bar for a hatch cover of a railroad car, the holddown bar having opposed ends one of which is adapted to be pivotally mounted to the car and the other of which is adapted to be releasably latched to the car while a medial portion thereof intermediate the opposed ends is adapted to extend across the hatch cover and carries a sealing gasket in a channel thereof that is adapted to engage against the hatch cover. The medial portion of the holddown bar has a surface adapted to engage a certain structure of the car outboard of the hatch thereof when the holddown bar is pivoted to a hatch opening position thereof. The surface of the medial portion of the holddown bar comprises a resilient bumper carrier by the holddown bar for engaging the structure of the car when the holddown bar is pivoted thereagainst whereby the bumper tends to prevent damage to that structure of the car when the holddown bar is pivoted to the open position thereof.

A pedestal liner for a railway vehicle and method of making same are provided wherein such liner comprises a roughly U-shaped metal support comprising the main structural portion of the liner with the metal support having a bight and a pair of parallel legs and an insert is provided and carried by the metal support. The insert has a pair of roughly parallel members which have outer portions disposed outwardly of and parallel to the parallel legs of the support and the parallel members are comprised of antifriction material; and, the insert has an integral arm extending transverse its members with the arm also being comprised of antifriction material. The insert is adapted to be readily installed on and removed from the metal support and is held in position mainly by surface portions of the metal support to define the pedestal liner.

Pedestal liner for railway vehicle and method of making same

A hose clamp structure and hose construction employing same are provided wherein such structure comprises a pair of cooperating interconnectible members each having a plurality of teeth adapted for interconnecting engagement and wherein the members upon being interconnected around an associated hose end extend substantially over a first arcuate length of the hose end with a second arcuate length of the hose end completing the remaining 360.degree. circumference of such hose end. Each of the members is defined as a separate part and has means for connecting the members to the hose end such that when the members are connected to the hose end the second arcuate length of the hose end is employed as clamping means and the connected members and second arcuate length cooperate to define an annular construction enabling the hose end to be clamped around an associated structure.

A wear member for a railway vehicle and method of making same are provided wherein such wear member is comprised of a metal support having a substantially planar sheet portion which has a continuous supporting surface and ultra high molecular weight polymeric material disposed against the supporting surface on a common interface with such metal support and polymeric material being attached and interlocked together as a unitary structure by cooperating formed means in the two components at the interface and free of additional attaching components.

Wear member for railway vehicle

A substantially U-shaped pedestal liner is provided for disposal between an associated pedestal leg and journal box of a railway pedestal truck and the liner is comprised of ultra high molecular weight polymeric material and has a reinforcing structure embedded in the polymeric material which serves as a matrix therefor and substantially completely surrounds the structure and the structure has openings therein for receiving the polymeric material completely therethrough while enabling better embedment of the structure whereby the structure provides reinforcement while preventing cold flow of the polymeric material.

A pedestal liner for a pedestal truck of a railway vehicle and method of making same are provided wherein such pedestal liner is of roughly U-shaped configuration having a bight and a pair of parallel legs and comprising a continuous uninterrupted backing material defining the bight and parallel legs, a first antifriction material for the bight fixed against the backing material and adapted to engage a vertically disposed planar guide surface of an associated journal box, a second antifriction material for the parallel legs fixed against the backing material and adapted to engage vertically disposed parallel side surfaces of the journal box which are disposed on opposite sides of the guide surface with the backing material providing optimum structural support for the antifriction materials and the first and second antifriction materials having different wear characteristics determined by the different wear rates to which they are subjected.

Pedestal liner for a railway vehicle and method of making same

A wear member for use between a pair of relatively movable components of a railway vehicle and method of making the same are provided wherein the wear member has a support provided with a continuous supporting surface. Polymeric material is attached to the support and is supported by the continuous supporting surface thereof whereby the polymeric material has an outer antifriction wear surface. A comparatively rigid load-carrying member is embedded in the polymeric material and the load-carrying member serves to maintain the polymeric material free of substantial indentation under conditions of high impact loads applied simultaneously against the load-carrying member and the polymeric material, the load-carrying member having a peripheral side surface being engaged by the polymeric material completely around the entire peripheral side surface so that the load-carrying member is completely surrounded at the peripheral side surface thereof by the polymeric material.

Wear member for railway vehicle and method of making same

A wear member for use between a pair of relatively movable components of a railway vehicle and method of making same are provided and such wear member comprises a metal support adapted to be supported on one of the pair of components and a liner attached to the metal support wherein the liner is made of a polymeric matrix material which is reinforced by a metal structure having openings therein and such metal structure is disposed substantially centrally between opposed surfaces of the polymeric material and the opposed surfaces include a smooth antifriction wear surface engageable by the other of the pair of relatively moveable components; and, the liner is attached in position by metal members extending between the metal structure and the metal support through polymeric material disposed therebetween with a plurality of welds welding the metal members in position between the metal structure and the metal support.
