The disclosed embodiments are directed to enhancing insensitive munitions performance. Some of the embodiments employ an outgassing pad having unique geometrical configurations, compositions, and positioning. Other embodiments rely on using thermally-releasable components to foster billet expulsion. Additional embodiments combine both aspects into entire cook-off mitigation systems for insensitive munitions improvements.

Embodiments of the invention are directed to enhancing insensitive munitions performance. Some embodiments of the invention employ an outgassing pad having unique geometrical configurations and positioning. Other embodiments rely on using thermally-releasable components to foster billet expulsion. Additional embodiments combine both aspects into an entire cook-off mitigation system.

Cook-off mitigation systems using an uncanistered outgassing pad

A modular angular alignment clocking mechanism employs a hollow housing, a threaded interface ring, and a compression spring. The threaded interface ring is inserted into the housing and is followed by the compression spring. The housing is configured to thread onto one cylinder. Another cylinder is then threaded into the threaded interface ring and torqued to specification after clocking.

A venting system for a casing containing an explosive material includes a base plug having one or more venting ports. A ring-shaped failure mechanism mounted to the base plug seals the venting ports. The failure mechanism has a selected melting temperature such that raising the temperature of the failure mechanism to its melting temperature causes the failure mechanism to unseal the venting port to allow controlled burning of the explosive material. An insert ring formed of a durable material to protect the failure mechanism from being damaged may be mounted on an outer surface of the failure mechanism. An adhesive may be used to seal gaps between the failure mechanism, the insert ring and the base plug. The failure mechanism may have a peripheral tab formed to fit within a corresponding groove in the base plug to mount the failure mechanism securely to the base plug.

Insensitive munitions warhead explosive venting system

A safe and arm device, which has an explosive train interrupted by a void establish a safe condition, has the void filled with a liquid explosive to establish an armed condition. The void may be in a device in which the liquid explosive is motivated by fluid pressure corresponding to free-fall or other velocities. The void may be a chamber portion filled with the liquid explosive by expansion of a bladder. Premature arming may be prevented by forming the explosive liquid from nonexplosive liquids mixed by rupture of a bladder or by melting a solid explosive.

Safe and arm device with expansible element in liquid explosive

A hand-held, power-driven trimming device, especially useful in trimming excess carcass fat, includes a cylindrical housing having a hollow interior, a rotary-driven cutter blade assembly with multiple helical cutting blades mounted for rotation in the housing, and a handle on the housing for holding the trimming device during use. The helical cutter blade assembly is mounted along the axis of the housing through a cantilever mount inside a sealed lubrication chamber in one end of the housing. The blade assembly is preferably driven from a remote power source, such as an electric motor, coupled to a flexible drive shaft passing through the handle. The flexible drive shaft powers a worm or helix gear supported by bearings inside the chamber. The worm or helix gear drives a helix gear supported in the sealed lubrication chamber by bearings on the cantilevered drive shaft for the rotary blade assembly. A discharge blade preferably in the form of a stationary auger blade is mounted axially in the housing inside the rotary cutter blade assembly. The auger is restrained from rotation by a fixed shaft passing through the housing and through the cutter drive and support shaft in the sealed chamber. The helical cutter blades rotate close to the outer edge of the stationary auger and create a scissor-like counter-rotation action on material trimmed by the rotary cutter blades. The trimmed material enters the interior of the rotating blades and is then forced axially along the auger owing to its serpentine form working in cooperation with the counter-rotating helical cutter blades to continuously remove trimmed material from the blades and expel the material from an open end of the cylindrical housing during use.
