According to several aspects, a method for identifying roadway safety events may include performing a measurement of one or more target vehicles using a sensor. The method further may include identifying a safety event based at least in part on the measurement of the of one or more target vehicles. The method further may include performing an action based at least in part on the safety event.

Identifying roadway safety events in remote vehicles

A system for routing a vehicle based on roadway characteristics includes a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) for determining a geographical location of the vehicle, a vehicle communication system for communicating with server systems, and a vehicle controller in electrical communication with the GNSS and the vehicle communication system. The vehicle controller is programmed to determine a vehicle mass, vehicle height, and vehicle width and receive a navigation request from an occupant of the vehicle. The vehicle controller is further programmed to determine a navigation route using at least the GNSS and the vehicle communication system in response to receiving the navigation request. The navigation route is based at least in part on the vehicle mass, vehicle height, and vehicle width.

A system for providing an alert to an occupant within a vehicle includes a system controller in communication with a plurality of onboard sensors, other vehicles and infrastructure systems, an augmented reality head up display system and a full windshield display system, each adapted to project images onto an inner surface of a windshield of the vehicle, the system controller adapted to detect at least one approaching vehicle, calculate a distance from the intersection, speed and trajectory of the at least one approaching vehicle, determine if the at least one approaching vehicle poses a threat and classify the at least one approaching vehicle as a threat vehicle, and provide a warning message and augmentation graphics by projecting the warning message and augmentation graphics onto the inner surface of the windshield with at least one of the AR-HUD system and the full windshield display system.

A method for selecting a route along an intersection includes receiving map data, receiving vehicle telemetry data crowdsourced from a plurality of remote vehicles. The method includes determining a sight distance using the map data, determining an average vehicle speed along the intersection using the vehicle telemetry data, determining a time available to navigate through the intersection using the sight distance and the average vehicle speed along the intersection, determining a ratio between the time available to navigate through the intersection and a time required to navigate the intersection, and determining a cost value of the intersection using the ratio between the time available to navigate through the intersection and the time required to navigate the intersection.

A system and method of identifying and quantifying congestion within a traffic stream including obtaining telemetric data from a plurality of vehicles traveling within a plurality of normalized road segments, determining a property of each normalized road segment based on the telemetric data and a road profile for each road segment, determining a disruption score indicative of a level of disruption in a traffic flow within each road segment, mapping the road segments within a two-dimensional spatial-temporal grid of cells, wherein each cell represents a normalized road segment at a specified time, for each cell, determining if the traffic flow is congested, identifying a congested traffic stream including a plurality of contiguous cells that have congested traffic flow, quantifying the congested traffic stream, and providing an output signal.

The compatible feature is a vehicle feature present in both the target vehicle and the host vehicle. The occupant data includes meta-data about the occupant of the host vehicle, customer-facing features of the host vehicle, and interaction data between the occupant and the customer-facing features of the host vehicle.

A system for estimating cloud cover from moving vehicles includes: vehicle mounted sensors communicating with one or more control modules. The control modules have processors, memory, and input/output (I/O) ports. The I/O ports of the control modules of the vehicles communicate with the sensors. The control modules execute program code stored in the memory including first and second algorithm portions. The first algorithm portion, collects sensor data from the sensors, estimates atmospheric parameters from the sensor data; and computes measurement coordinates from the sensor data and atmospheric parameters. The second algorithm portion generates and selectively updates a cloud map based on from data received from the first algorithm portion, and from high-definition map (HD Map) data.

A method for assessing lateral acceleration includes receiving vehicle telemetry data. The vehicle telemetry data includes a plurality of geographical positions along the curved trajectory traveled by the vehicle, the heading of the vehicle at each of the plurality of geographical, and the velocity of the vehicle at each of the plurality of geographical positions. The method further includes determining a curve radius of the curve trajectory traveled by the vehicle using the vehicle telemetry data and determining a lateral acceleration of the vehicle at each of the plurality of geographical positions along the curve trajectory The method further includes converting the lateral acceleration of the vehicle at each of the plurality of geographical positions along the curve trajectory traveled by the vehicle into a g-force.

The controller is programmed to receive a navigation request from an occupant of the vehicle and determine a vehicle clearance height. The system further includes a computer having one or more processors programmed to receive the input signal from the input device. The processor is further programmed to determine a speed profile of the remote vehicle based on the input signal, determine that the remote vehicle is a traffic impediment based on the input signal, and determine a predicted slowdown event associated with the traffic impediment and the speed profile. The processor is further programmed to generate an actuation signal, in response to the processor determining the speed profile, the traffic impediment, and the predicted slowdown event. The notification device provides the notification of the predicted slowdown event to a user in response to the notification device receiving the actuation signal from the processor.
