Systems and methods relating to a dual-mode Set-Top Box (STB) providing improved availability of a Linear Television (LTV) channel by using an Internet Protocol (IP) Television (IPTV) service as a fallback mechanism for a Direct-To-Home (DTH) satellite service. In some embodiments, a method of operation of a dual-mode STB that consumes content from a DTH satellite system when operating in a DTH satellite mode and consumes content from an IPTV system when operating in an IPTV mode comprises consuming content on a LTV channel in the DTH satellite mode and deciding whether to switch to the IPTV mode before consumption of content on the LTV channel in the DTH satellite mode is compromised. The method further comprises, upon deciding to switch modes, switching from the DTH satellite mode to the IPTV mode. The method further comprises, after switching modes, consuming content on the LTV channel in the IPTV mode.

A method of managing, by a service provider, a program stored within a service provider network. Multiple multimedia devices are in communication with the service provider network. In accordance with one embodiment, a method for managing, by a service provider, a program stored within a service provider network includes determining a first number of subscriptions for the program. If the first number of subscriptions is less than a first threshold, at least a portion of the program is transmitted to at least a first multimedia device having a subscription for the program and the program is removed from the service provider network.

The processor is configured to authenticate the SB DMR based on the received identifications to determine if the SB DMR is part of a group of SB DMRs sharing a common subscription.

The PDSN receives from an access node (AN), a registration request message having a cell information for requesting. The PDSN translates the cell information into a zone ID, stores the zone ID in a first table and sends to a AAA server, an access request message for authenticating the MT. PDSN further receives from the AAA server, an access accept message for authorizing the MT to receive packet data service, wherein the access accept message includes an allowance information. Afterwards the PDSN compares the allowance information with the zone ID. If the allowance information is different from the zone ID in the first table, the PDSN set up a filter for the MT and rejects packet data for the requested packet data service.

Geographical restriction of services in a packet data telecommunications network

The present invention relates to a text control message for carrying control information from a Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) to a terminal in a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). The text message has a code for indicating to the terminal that the text message contains control information and a text portion being the control information. A logical node located in WWAN that sends control information to a terminal located in a WLAN. The logical node receives information regarding the terminal from a Wireless Serving Node (WSN) located in the WLAN. The logical node has knowledge of an access point connected to the WSN that currently serves the terminal in the WLAN. The logical node triggers, in a message center of the WWAN, the sending of the text message to the terminal.

Signaling wireless wide area network mechanism for a terminal located in a wireless local area network

A system, method, and apparatus for transmitting a packet from a server to a wireless client, using direct digital calls, wherein the server initiates the call are presented. The server transmits a packet to addressed to an Internet Protocol (IP) address associated with the wireless client. The packet is received by a wireless application gateway which maintains a table correlating IP addresses with mobile services integrated services digital network (MSISDN) numbers or mobile identification numbers (MIN). The MSISDN/MIN number is then used to request routing information. In response to the request, a dynamic IP address and a traffic channel are allocated to the wireless client. The dynamic IP address is transmitted to the wireless application protocol gateway. Upon receiving the IP address, the wireless application protocol gateway transmits the digital data communication towards the IP address. The digital data communication is received by a serving mobile switching center which causes the digital data communication to be transmitted to the wireless client using the allocated traffic channel.

System, method, and apparatus for pushing data in a direct digital call environment

A system and method of transferring data to and from a mobile station (MS) in a cellular telecommunications network. When the MS originates a data transmission, the MS simultaneously seizes additional voice channels or control channels from the serving cell or adjacent cells, fills time slots with data packets, and asynchronously transmits the data packets over the plurality of channels in order to increase the data transfer rate. For data calls terminating at the MS, the serving mobile switching center (MSC) reserves a plurality of channels having sufficient signal strength to maintain a connection with the destination MS. The MSC informs the involved base stations that an asynchronous transmission is to be made to the MS. The MSC then assembles the data packets and starts transmission through the involved base stations to the MS over the reserved channels. The MS assembles the packets in numerical order and delevers the data to the user.

Asynchronous transfer on the cellular radio link

Procedures are disclosed for supporting roaming subscriber mobile station access to stored subscriber data messages. In one aspect, a received subscriber data message is routed for storage and subsequent forwarding/retrieval, not to a &ldquo;home&rdquo; message center, but instead to a message center either optimally positioned with respect to a current known location of the subscriber mobile station or associated with an initially receiving mobile switching center. In another aspect, a mailbox established for a given subscriber mobile station in the home message center is transferred (perhaps on a periodic basis) for storage in a local mailbox of a proximate message center within a cellular telephone network where the subscriber is currently roaming. In either case, the storing message center thereafter performs any requisite operations needed to facilitate message forwarding to or retrieval by the addressee subscriber mobile station.

Distributed data storage and delivery in a cellular telephone network

A number of different mechanisms are proposed for effectuating the delivery of digital data messages to mobile stations which have currently selected an analog control channel. In one method, a signal is sent to the mobile station instructing it to make a server reselection and choose the best available digital control channel. Once the reselection is accomplished, the digital data message is delivered in a conventional manner using the digital control channel. In another method, the digital data message is reformatted for analog delivery, and the reformatted message sent over either the analog control channel or a selected analog voice channel. In yet another method, a call connection is made with the mobile station over a voice channel, and a synthesized audible message corresponding to the digital data message is transmitted over the voice channel after the subscriber answers the call. In instances where message delivery over the control channel is interrupted due to mobile station roaming, a forced re-registration occurs following the new server reselection, thus triggering continued message delivery over the new control channel.

Delivery of subscriber digital data messages in a dual mode cellular

In a radio telecommunications network, a system and method of providing service differentiation for call forwarding based upon the type of call. The system provides network support that allows the forwarding of calls of different types to appropriate devices for each type of call, as identified by the call's service code. The system determines whether a call to a mobile station is a data call, and if it is a data call, provides the network support for forwarding the call to a different number than voice calls. A Service Type parameter is added to ANSI-41 signaling messages to inform various nodes in the network of the type of call. The network includes a home location register/service control point (HLR/SCP) with a database of call forwarding (transfer) numbers for its served mobile stations. The database records at least one transfer number for each type of service. Service logic in the HLR/SCP associates the type of call with the appropriate transfer number. In this manner, incoming data calls such as G3Fax calls are forwarded to an alternate fax machine, a fax mailbox, or some other device capable of storing the data rather than a voice mailbox. The system and method are applicable to forwarding any type of data service, and are not limited to ADS and G3 Fax calls.

System and method of forwarding data calls in a radio telecommunications

An interface between a dual mode mobile station and a piece of data terminal equipment supports both a logical digital interface and a logical analog interface, with the analog interface passing through a modem. At set-up of either a mobile originated or mobile terminated data/fax call, a supporting dual mode communications network determines whether a digital traffic channel is available on an air interface. If so, the channel is allocated to the mobile station, and data/fax communication with the data terminal equipment occurs using the logical digital interface. Otherwise, an analog voice channel is allocated, and the data/fax communication with the data terminal equipment occurs using the logical analog interface and modem. Within the supporting network, data/fax communications via the digital traffic channel are routed through an interworking functionality that terminates a radio link protocol utilized for communicating over the digital air interface. Analog voice channel data/fax communications are instead routed through a modem pool that terminates a selected modem protocol utilized by the modem for communicating over the analog air interface.

System supporting data/fax connection with a dual mode mobile telephone

A method of handling SMS messages in a radio telecommunications network when an originating mobile station-based Short Message Entity (MS-SME) sends a SMS origination message while operating in a first Mobile Switching Center (MSC) and then moves into a second MSC before the MS-SME receives a SMS acknowledgement message. The method begins by including a R.sub.-- Transaction ID parameter in the SMS origination message sent over the Digital Traffic Channel (DTC) from the originating MS-SME to the first MSC. If the MS-SME moved back to an anchor MSC, a SMS.sub.-- Transaction ID (SMSTID) parameter is included in an ANSI-41 SMS Delivery Backward (SMDBACK) Invoke message sent from the first MSC to the anchor MSC. The SMSTID parameter utilizes information from the R.sub.-- Transaction ID parameter to enable the MS-SME to correlate a SMS acknowledgement message with the SME origination message. If the MS-SME moved to a new serving MSC, the SMSTID parameter is placed in a SMS Delivery Point-to-Point Acknowledgement (SMDPPACK) Invoke message, and sent from the anchor MSC to the new serving MSC. The information in the SMSTID parameter is used by the second MSC to send a SMS acknowledgement message to the originating MS-SME.

Method of handling short message service acknowledgement messages

A system and method in a radio telecommunications network of storing calling line identification (CLI) information when a called mobile terminal is not available to receive the CLI information, and forwarding the CLI information to the called mobile terminal when the terminal becomes available. When an incoming call for the mobile terminal is received in a gateway mobile switching center (G-MSC), the Home Location Register (HLR) or the visited MSC (V-MSC) where the mobile terminal is operating determines whether the mobile terminal is available. If not, the G-MSC sends a short message service (SMS) point-to-point (PTP) message to a message center (MC) and includes the CLI information. The MC is notified when the mobile terminal becomes available. The MC then forwards the CLI information to the V-MSC in a SMS PTP message. The V-MSC sends the CLI information to the mobile terminal in a IS-136 R-DATA message or other appropriate data message.

System and method of providing calling-line identification (CLI)

In a TDMA/TDD communication system and method, communication throughput is increased by allowing direct duplex communication between the mobile stations that are within close proximity of each other. The system and method determines the range of the mobile stations from each other. Based on the range, the communication units may communicate with each other in one of either direct mode or indirect mode. If an in-range condition is determined, the mobile stations engage in direct duplex communication with each other. Otherwise, they communicate with each other in the indirect mode.
