Various systems and methods for configuring backup and replication operations. For example, a method involves a backup system receiving storage configuration information regarding a replication topology of a storage system. The backup system uses the storage configuration information to configure a backup operation. The backup operation is configured in accord with specifications included in backup information. Configuring the backup operation includes selecting a source volume and a target volume, using the storage configuration information. Once the backup operation is configured, the backup operation is initiated. Performing the backup operation involves creating a backup image on the selected source volume and replicating the backup image to the selected target volume.

Backup and replication configuration using replication topology

Systems, methods, and computer-readable storage media are disclosed for a computer system determining a transport path for a data duplication job. A data duplication job request, being a request that data stored on a source device be duplicated, may be received. A plurality of possible transport path components may be enumerated. The plurality of possible transport path components may include one or more possible destination devices, one or more possible means of transport, and one or more possible media servers. A ranking may be determined for at least a subset of the possible transport path components. An availability may be determined for at least a subset of the possible transport path components. A transport path may be selected based on the determined rankings and the determined availabilities. The data duplication job may be performed using the selected transport path.

Intelligent device and media server selection for optimized backup image duplication

System and method for performing two-tier backups in file systems without requiring Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM). A two-tier backup mechanism may perform first-tier backups of dynamic and candidate static data, and second-tier backups of candidate static data. Data is examined by the two-tier backup mechanism and, if the data qualifies as candidate static data, metadata is created for the data. Candidate static data and its metadata are copied to first-tier backups along with dynamic data, and are also copied to second-tier backups a specified number of times, after which the static data is reclassified as 'static copied data'. Only metadata for static copied data is written to the first-tier backups. Embodiments may be implemented in file systems that do not support HSM and in file systems that support HSM, whether HSM is operational or not.
