Tooling for forming an article which includes an injection molded peripheral frame defining an opening closed by a panel insert. The panel insert is struck from sheet material and together with an associated punch or carrier cooperates with a split mold to completely define the cavity for injection molding of the article. Inasmuch as the panel insert is heat bondable to the injection molded frame and forms a portion of the walls of the cavity, it is automatically bonded to the injection molded frame. The panel insert may be peelable from the frame and include a pull tab for effecting the same. The pull tab may be formed by the same punch which cuts out the panel insert, or the pull tab may be separately formed from sheet material adjacent an intended position of a panel insert and folded into overlying relation to the intended position of the panel insert and staked to the sheet material, after which the panel insert is cut from the sheet material by a punch. The pull tab is initially connected to the sheet material along an elongated fold line, after which not all of the pull tab connected to the sheet material is removed by the punch so as to define a centrally located pull tab which is aligned with the projecting part of the punch to effect a completely sealed mold cavity utilizing the panel insert with a previously formed and folded over pull tab staked thereto.

Method of molding a peripheral frame with a panel insert

A press-on closure 10 for a tubular container 12. The closure includes a molded plastic frame 14 having a ledge 28 on which an end panel 16 is seated and to which the end panel is peelably secured. The end panel has a free outer peripheral edge unbonded to the frame. The resultant closed container is subject to retorting with the result that heretofore the end panel could axially outwardly deform and possibly initiate internal peeling. To prevent this peeling, the frame is provided with a thin flexible integral flange 36 forming a continuation of the ledge on which the end panel is seated. The end panel is also peelably bonded to the flange and the flange deforms or deflects with the end panel. The frame has a press fit onto the container, which is preferably in the form of a metal can, which at the end thereof to be closed by the closure is provided with a radially outwardly directed curl 48. The curl terminates in a raw edge 54 and is so shaped that when it is seated within a groove in the underside of the frame, the raw edge is embedded in a skirt portion of the frame to permanently and sealingly lock the curl within the frame.

Press-on closure with peelable end panel

Closures for containers, such as cans and the like, wherein the closure is comprised of an end panel and a frame member which, preferably, are attached together during an insert-injection molding operation used for forming the frame member. Depending upon the respective materials, the attachment therebetween may comprise heat-bonding or adhesives and the like. The various end panels have a displaceable panel portion for providing an opening in the closure to provide access to the product(s) within the container. The various panel portions are defined by weakening lines, perforations or cut lines in the end panel and molded runners for 'repairing' and/or sealing weakened or lanced portions of the end panels. The molded runners provide beam strength for protecting against excessive bulging during autoclave or other sterilization processes and against buckling during vacuum processing.

Method for forming container closure

Method of making an injection molded frame having a panel insert

Tooling for forming an article which includes an injection molded peripheral frame defining an opening closed by a panel insert. The panel insert is struck from sheet material and together with an associated punch or carrier cooperated with a split mold to completely define the cavity for injection molding of the article. Inasmuch as the panel insert is heat bondable to the injection molded frame and forms a portion of the walls of the cavity, it is automatically bonded to the injection molded frame. The pull tab may be formed by the same punch which cuts out the panel insert, or the pull tab may be separately formed from sheet material adjacent an intended position of a panel insert and folded into overlying relation to the intended position of the panel insert and staked to the sheet material, after which the panel insert is cut from the sheet material by a punch. The pull tab is initially connected to the sheet material along an elongated fold line, after which not all of the pull tab connected to the sheet material is removed by the punch so as to define a centrally located pull tab which is aligned with the projecting part of the punch to effect a completely sealed mold cavity utilizing the panel insert with a previously formed and folded over pull tab staked thereto.

Apparatus for making an injection molded frame having a panel insert

Closures for containers, such as cans and the like, wherein the closure is comprised of an end panel and a frame member which, preferrably, are attached together during an insert-injection molding operation used for forming the frame member. Depending upon the respective materials, the attachment therebetween may comprise heat-bonding or adhesives, and the like. Container closure, and method for producing same

This relates to a sealing head for sealing lids to cartons. The sealing head is provided with suction heads or cups for receiving a lid from a lid supply and depositing such lid in position on a carton which is mounted in a nest. The sealing head is provided with a seal member which forms the seal with a nest carrying a carton so that a vacuum may be drawn within the nest both within and around the carton. Thereafter, the sealing head provides an inert gas, such as nitrogen, to fill the carton with the inert gas, after which a support further sealing head moves the sealing head down further so that a lower edge of a projecting induction heating coil will clamp a lid against a carton and effect a heat bonding of the lid to the carton. The sealing head is self contained and has a fitting including a plurality of electrical prongs and fluid line sockets for coupling the sealing head to a receptacle. Finally, the induction heating coil of the sealing head is of a special configuration so as to compensate for a pull tab carried by the lid, which lid is generally oval to match the oval carton. The outline of the coil deviates slightly from the oval shape so as to provide a seal which has a starting point to initiate peeling of the lid from the carton. Further, this starting point is aligned with the pull tab and there are current compensating pins carried by the coil to compensate for the metal within the pull tab.

Sealing head including an induction heating coil

A reclosable closure for containers of the type used for keeping or storing product for some time following initial opening of the container. Typical uses would be for snack foods such as candies, peanuts, etc., and powdered products such as sugar, coffee, tea and other beverage mixes and the like. The closure also is adaptable for use with canned vagetables and meats and also with non-food products such as, for example, nails, tacks and a myriad of similar hardware items. The preferred closure includes an end panel and a ring-shaped frame member which are fused or otherwise adhered together during insert-injection molding of the frame member. Means are provided on the frame member for contacting an edge of the end panel, or an integral pull tab thereon, for restraining the end panel in a position for reclosing the container.

Reclosable container closure

A flange assembly of a molded plastic container which is multi-sided. Each side terminates at its upper edge in the flange assembly and the flange assembly includes an inner support flange to which a closure may be bonded. Outwardly of the support flange is an upstanding shock absorbing bead which additionally functions to center the closure on the container. The bead includes an inner leg which is integrally connected to the support flange and an outer leg with the inner leg being joined to the outer leg by a deformable bight portion. When dropped on the side, the package formed of the closed container will have the shock of the impact of striking a surface, such as a floor, absorbed by the deformation of the bead.

Molded plastic material container

This relates to an induction heating coil which is of a single turn construction and particularly configurated for inducing electrical energy into a metal foil barrier layer of a laminated container closure for effecting heat bonding of the closure to a container in a preselected seal pattern. The seal pattern contains either one corner or the closure is provided with a projecting pull tab wherein there is a greater heating requirement and thus a requirement for the induction of higher electrical energy into the closure. The need for the induction of a greater amount of heat into the closure at a corner or the location of a projecting pull tab is provided for by reducing the cross section of the heating coil at the location of the greater heat requirement. The reduction in cross section is primarily effected by forming a notch in the heating coil. If desired, a closer control of the heating effect of the coil may be obtained by positioning in the notch a ferrite insert.

Induction heating coil

This relates to a closure for a plastic container wherein the closure is to be heat bonded to the container. The closure is of a laminated construction and includes an outer structural layer of plastic material, a combined electric heat inductive and barrier layer, and an inner bond forming plastic material layer. The bond forming inner layer is thin as compared to the thickness of the structural outer layer. The barrier layer is formed of a metal foil, preferably aluminum, and is also quite thin.

Laminated closure for a plastic container

This relates to an induction heating coil unit which includes a conventional one turn induction coil which has associated therewith a laminated core. The core is formed of electrically conductive metal members and insulating, preferably plastic, members. The core members are arranged in stacked relation over the coil and then the core is normally potted in a supporting structure preferably of a plastic material. Where maximum heat is required, the concentration of the conductive members is increased. By varying the ratio of the conductive members to the insulating spacer members, the desired electrical energy may be induced into a closure having an intermediate metal barrier layer so as to control the heating of the closure and thus the heat bonding of the closure to an associated container.

Induction coil heating unit for heat sealing closures to containers

A frame and membrane assembly for a liquid transfer cell wherein the frame has a peripheral portion including opposite faces and one face is planar and the opposite face carries a peripherally outer sealing ring and inwardly thereof an anchoring arrangement for the membrane. Most specifically the anchoring arrangement is in the form of a peripheral groove of a generally dovetail cross section with an outer peripheral portion of the membrane being seated within that peripheral groove and retained therein in interlocked relation by way of a continuous second sealing ring. The second sealing ring, when the cell is assembled, is squeezed so as to both more tightly interlock the membrane with the frame and to form an inner seal between the two adjacent frames.
