Components that include catalyst layers used in membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), and methods of making such components are described. The catalyst layers yield more uniform current distributions across the active area of the MEA during operation. The catalyst layers may have a uniform catalyst activity profile of a less active catalyst to achieve more uniform current density over the MEA active area. The catalyst layers may have a variable activity profile, such as an activity profile with a varying slope, to compensate for the inherent nonlinearities of catalyst utilization during operation of an electrochemical fuel cell. Desired variable catalyst activity profiles may be achieved, for example, by varying the catalyst loading across the MEA from inlet to outlet ports or by varying the surface area of the catalyst loading or by varying the surface area of the catalyst support elements.

An aperture mask assembly includes a rotatable frame and a mask having apertures. A clamping arrangement is used to tension the mask and to conform the mask to a shape defined by the frame. Tension is applied to the mask in a direction substantially parallel to an axis of the frame and/or around the circumference of the shape defined by the frame. Deposition material emanating from a deposition source located within the rotatable frame is deposited through the mask apertures onto a web.

A coating composition is applied to a substrate, dried, and exposed to a hydrophilic organic solvent forming a channel pattern having a first set of channels, and a second set of channels that are substantially perpendicular to the first set of channels. Color transmissive displays have historically used only backlight for forming the color image, and have not used ambient light. Usually, such a display is not used in bright sunlight, since the color image becomes washed out. Transflective color displays form an image by reflecting ambient light or by transmitting backlight, and can be used in bright sunlight. The transflector in such displays reflects the ambient light while also transmitting the backlight. The requirements on the transflector, however, are different from those used in monochromatic displays. According to the invention, a color transflective display device uses comprises a transmissive display unit having a viewing side and a back side and defining picture elements. A structured transflector is disposed to the back side of the color display unit. The structured transflector includes a structured surface and a layered dielectric reflector disposed over the structured surface.
