A method and rocker arm assembly for actuating an engine valve are disclosed. The rocker arm may include an integrated hydraulic circuit used to control a lost motion piston. A reset piston may be included in the rocker arm to selectively reset the position of the lost motion piston. A control piston may also be included in the rocker arm to selectively lock the reset piston into a reset position. The rocker arm assembly may be used to achieve compression-release or bleeder braking, main intake, main exhaust, brake gas recirculation, and/or exhaust gas recirculation valve events.

Latched reset mechanism for engine brake

The present invention is directed to an actuator piston assembly for use in a rocker arm system. The actuator piston assembly is capable of actuating at least one engine valve during for example engine braking. The actuator piston assembly includes a piston body having a hollow interior, a screw assembly received within the hollow interior of the screw assembly, a biasing assembly for biasing the piston body with respect to the screw assembly, a cap assembly located within the hollow interior, wherein the biasing assembly interacts with the cap assembly and the screw assembly, and a securing assembly for movably securing the piston body to the screw assembly.

Actuator piston assembly for a rocker arm system

The present invention is directed to a locking assembly for use in a rocker arm assembly for an engine brake assembly. The rocker arm assembly includes a rocker arm pivotally mounted on a shaft. The rocker arm has a first end and a second end, wherein the first end includes a cam follower and the second end includes an actuator assembly for operating at least one valve during a braking operation. The improved rocker arm includes a locking assembly for releasably securing the rocker arm to the shaft to prevent pivoting of the rocker arm during a positive power operation. The locking assembly includes a releasable latching assembly located on one of the rocker arm and the shaft. The locking assembly also includes a latch receiving recess located on another of the rocker arm and the shaft. The releasable latching assembly engages the latch receiving recess during a positive power operation. The releasable latching assembly disengaging the latch receiving recess during an engine braking operation such that the rocker arm can pivot about the shaft.

Rocker brake assembly with hydraulic lock

Two members which initially have a very loose, complementary dovetail relationship to one another are firmly secured together by causing the material of a ductile locking member to flow into the space which initially exists between the complementary dovetail shapes. This technique is especially suitable for joining materials which are otherwise difficult to unite. For example, this technique can be used to secure an insert of tungsten carbide or ceramic in a main member of steel. Wear or bearing inserts of hard material can be secured in this way to the hydraulic pistons (especially the master pistons) used in compression release engine brakes.

Mechanical assemblies and methods of making same

A self-actuating keyless chuck for use with a reversible powered driver is disclosed. The chuck comprises a body which carries a rotatable split nut and a plurality of slidable jaws driven by the rotatable nut. A sleeve member is rotatably connected to the body and carries an impact ring provided with a first impact dog. A second impact dog is associated with the split nut. Spring means are provided to bias the first impact dog toward engagement with the second impact dog whereby the jaws will be tightened or loosened whenever the rotation of the sleeve is restrained and the powered driver is actuated.

Self-actuating keyless chuck

A pressure relief system for an internal combustion engine compression relief engine brake is disclosed. The pressure relief system comprises a bi-stable ball relief valve associated with the high pressure hydraulic system together with damping means adapted to damp out rapidly the oscillations of the ball valve during the period of its opening so as to maximize the flow of hydraulic fluid through the bi-stable valve and minimize the time required to relieve the pressure in the high pressure hydraulic system of the compression relief engine brake. The damping means comprises a spring controlled ball valve guide which inhibits premature reseating of the bi-stable ball valve and maximizes the average opening of the valve during its operating period.
