In an example, a printing device may include a cartridge including a print substance, a belt, and a controller including a processing resource and a memory resource. The processing resource may execute instructions to deposit a plurality of patches of the print substance from the cartridge onto the belt to determine a cartridge density based on a density of a sub-set of patches of the plurality of patches; and adjust a print substance output of the cartridge based on the determined density of the print substance in the cartridge.

A tension feedback signal is generated to reduce tension variation on a tape occurring at a reel frequency. Tension variation information may be obtained and used to generate the tension feedback signal. The tension feedback signal may be combined with a constant tension preset signal. The combined signal may be used to drive a tape reel at a tape reel speed adjusted according to the combined signal.

The present disclosure provides techniques for operating a tape drive. A method of operating a tape drive includes monitoring a parameter of the tape drive during a data access operation. The method also includes detecting an access failure. The method further includes selecting a treatment based on the parameter, applying the treatment, and performing a retry.

A tape drive is disclosed. The tape drive determines a current tape width and writes data to the tape as well as the current tape width. The tape width written to the tape is associated with the data. When reading data from a tape the tape drive reads the stored tape width and adjusts the current tape width to match the stored tape width before reading the data associated with the stored tape width.

Servo pattern read-back signal processing for storage devices is described. In an example, a method of processing a read-back signal derived from a servo pattern on a storage medium in a storage device includes differentiating the read-back signal in an analog domain to produce a differentiated signal; and converting the differentiated signal into digital samples.

Controlling positions of storage media heads is disclosed. An example storage media head position controller includes a position error filter to filter a media head position error based on a target position for a storage media head relative to a storage medium and a present media head position to generate a position signal, and a media speed monitor to modify an integration factor in the position error filter based on a media speed to adjust a phase margin of the position control loop.

A tape drive is disclosed. The tape drive determines a current tape width and adjusts the length of a tape head to more closely match the current tape width. The tape drive adjusts the length of the tape head by controlling the power to a heating element coupled to the tape head.

Arrangement and processing of longitudinal position information on a data storage medium

A system and method for positioning a sensor relative to a storage medium. A system includes a first sensor and a second sensor arranged so that a point of a storage medium traverses each sensor at a different time. A processor is coupled to the sensors. The processor varies the timing of a sample representing a noise signal received from the sensors in accordance with medium velocity. The processor adjusts the position of the sensors based on the sample.

An apparatus includes plural spaced apart sensors arranged along a direction of motion of a medium, and a processing circuit to receive signals from the sensors, determine a difference of the signals, and identify an error built into the medium based on the difference.

A pulse mismatch is measured for servo stripes on magnetic tape written with a servo write head having servo head gaps with different physical sizes. The servo head gaps are separately energized to correct the pulse mismatch so servo stripes written on the magnetic tape are within a predefined tolerance.

A tape drive comprising a head configured to read data from a tape and to write data to the tape, a pair of flanged guide rollers arranged one on either side of the head to guide the tape longitudinally over the head, and a flangeless inertial roller arranged between a flanged guide roller and the head to add inertia to the tape so as to limit speed and movement of the tape as it passes over the head.

A data storage device includes a first read mechanism, a second read mechanism, and a data storage medium movable with respect to the first read mechanism and the second read mechanism. A first reference patch containing reference bits is positioned near a first corner of the data storage medium. The first read mechanism is configured to read the reference bits of the first reference patch and the second read mechanism is configured to read the reference bits of a second reference patch. The storage device also includes a controller configured to determine whether the first read mechanism and the data storage medium are offset with respect to each other based upon the reference bits read by the first read mechanism and the reference bits read by the second mechanism.
