A method is disclosed for fluid injection and oil production from a single wellbore which includes providing a path of communication between the injection and production zones.

Single well injection and production system

Production of viscous hydrocarbons is initiated by first injecting an injection fluid down at least two tubing strings in a wellbore having multiple tubing strings therein. Following an initiation phase, flow of injection fluid in the production tubing string is ceased, and production of formation fluid to the surface commenced in the heated tubing. The production of formation fluids is controlled, and entry of uncondensed steam from the formation into the wellbore avoided by maintaining a liquid level in the formation which is above the production perforations.

Method of recovering hydrocarbons using single well injection/production

A method and apparatus is described for producing viscous petroleum from a subsurface formation. The apparatus includes a generally horizontal cased well through the subsurface formation with injection and production tubings within the well. The casing is perforated and the inner tubings carry a movable packer and a rotatable agitator. The method comprises injecting a heating and drive fluid for moving heated viscous petroleum through the perforations in the casing and into the well for production to the wellhead. Production is monitored for the ratio of produced packer fluid and viscous petroleum. Based on that ratio, the packer is moved within the casing to positions along the horizontal well to maximize production of petroleum. The rotatable agitator assists in removal from the well bore of formation solids produced with the viscous petroleum.

Method of assisting surface lift of heated subsurface viscous petroleum

A method is disclosed for recovering viscous petroleum from subsurface formation, such as tar sands, wherein a substantially horizontal, perforated casing is positioned in the formation and a movable diverter is positioned to direct a hot drive fluid out through the perforations and into the formation to move the viscous petroleum that has been heated by the drive fluid toward a production location. The production is monitored for content of drive fluid and petroleum and the position of the diverter is controlled in accordance with the monitored production to optimize the production of petroleum and to maintain the communication path within the formation between the injection location and the production location.

Method of recovering viscous petroleum employing heated subsurface

Recovery of viscous petroleum such as from a thick tar sand formation is assisted using a closed-loop flow path formed in a production well extending from the earth's surface through a substantial portion of the formation for conducting hot fluid to reduce the viscosity of the petroleum in the formation to develop a first potential passage in the formation outside the flow path into which a hot drive fluid is injected through a injection well to promote movement of the petroleum to the production well for production and to develop a second potential passage for fluid flow in the formation from a linearly spaced apart injection well for injection of a hot drive fluid to further promote movement of additional petroleum to the production well.

Method and apparatus for recovering viscous petroleum from thick tar sand

Recovery of viscous petroleum such as from tar sands is assisted using a controlled flow of hot fluid in a flow path within the formation but out of direct contact with the viscous petroleum; thus a solid-wall, hollow tubular member in the formation is used for conducting hot fluid to reduce the viscosity of the petroleum to develop a potential passage in the formation outside the tubular member into which a drive fluid is injected to promote movement of the petroleum to a production position.

Recovery of viscous petroleum such as from thick tar sands is assisted using a closed-loop flow path formed in a well by concentric casing and tubular members extending from the earth's surface through a substantial portion of the formation for conducting hot fluid to reduce the viscosity of the petroleum in the formation to develop a potential passage in the formation outside the flow path into which a drive fluid is injected to promote movement of the petroleum to the well for production up a production flow line extending up the interior of the tubular member.

Recovery of viscous petroleum such as from tar sands is assisted using a substantially vertical passage from the earth's surface which penetrates the tar sand and has extending therefrom a lateral hole containing a flow path isolated from the tar sand for circulating a hot fluid to and from the vertical passage to develop a potential flow path into which a drive fluid is injected to promote movement of the petroleum to a production position.
