The invention includes an isostatic press supply of heat to a workpiece by microwave energy and a method for isostatically pressing a powdered ceramic or powdered metal material that is heated by microwave energy. The isostatic press includes a pressure vessel. A fluid medium is available for supply to the pressure vessel under pressure. The invention further includes a means for transmitting microwave energy into the pressure vessel. The method includes preparing a workpiece comprising a microwave coupler material. Desirably, the workpiece is a composition comprising a powdered coupler or semiconductor and a powdered insulator. The workpiece is immersed in an additional powdered insulator which is transparent to the microwave energy. The workpiece and immersing powdered insulator are contained in a closed, compressible container. The contained, immersed workpiece is then placed into a pressure vessel. Microwave energy is transmitted into the pressure vessel at a sufficient frequency to couple with the coupler. A fluid medium is supplied into the vessel under pressure either concurrently and/or before and/or after the transmission of microwave energy. The microwave energy couples with the coupler which causes the insulator of the workpiece to heat. The immersing insulator that surrounds the workpiece remains cool.

Isostatic pressing with microwave heating and method for same

A frequency generator is disclosed in which the phase modulation of a sta carrier frequency is precisely and repeatedly controlled by a digital input. A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) receives a digital input from the output of a computer and provides an analog voltage output. An analog ramp signal generator is also provided such that the output of the analog ramp signal generator and the output of the digital-to-analog converter form the inputs to a voltage comparator network. The output of the voltage comparator network switches state each time the ramp signal generator output exceeds the digital-to-analog converter output. The output of the voltage comparator network is used to trigger a one-shot multivibrator which thereby produces a square wave that is advanced or retarded in phase in response to the value of the digital input to the digital-to-analog converter. The one-shot multivibrator output is applied to a bandpass filter which has a suitable center frequency and passband to allow only the seventh harmonic of the fundamental period passage thereby generating a digitally phase controlled sine wave output.

A reliable, repeatable and stable VLF/LF atmospheric noise generator is cble of producing noise with known or given amplitude probability distributions and temporal characteristics such as pulse duration, pulse spacing, pulses per unit time and the discharge fine structure between pulses. A pseudo random noise carrier signal is multiplied in a plurality of digital-to-analog converters with the discharge envelopes created in a plurality of interconnected discharge envelope generators. The discharges are representative of cloud-to-ground discharges, intercloud discharges, the discharge rate, strokes per discharge and the discharge fine structure. All of the discharges are readily modifiable by suitably reprogramming operatively coupled memories and microprocessors in accordance with selected loading instructions.

Pseudo atmospheric noise generator having variable amplitude probability

An FM doppler fuze system comprising means forcombining a periodic wave ith white noise, white noise being a random mixture of frequencies possessing a constant power spectral density, means for modulating a carrier frequency with said periodic wave plus noise and transmitting a signal in the direction of a target, means for mixing a portion of said transmitted signal and a return echo signal from a target, and means for passing the band of expected doppler frequencies from the output of said mixer to provide an output operable to actuate the detonation circuit of a fuze.

An FM doppler fuze system comprising means for transmitting a signal hng a carrier frequency modulated by a band of random noise, means for mixing the transmitted signal with a return echo signal modified by the doppler effect of the relative movement between the fuze and a target, and means for deriving an output adapted to actuate the fuze from the low frequency doppler portion of the output from said mixing means.

1. A microwave radio fuze system for a missile having means for discriminng between a target and chaff comprising in combination, a pair of oppositely polarized transmitting antennas operably connected to a frequency modulated oscillator by a first switch means, a receiving antenna polarized in the same direction as one of said transmitting antennas, mixing means operably associated with said receiving antenna for mixing a portion of a transmitted signal with a received echo signal, amplifier means adapted to amplify said mixing means output, a pair of envelope detectors operably connected to said amplifying means by a second switch means, a difference amplifier adapted to receive the output from said pair of envelope detectors whereby a firing signal is provided by said difference amplifier when the output of a certain one of said detectors exceeds the output of said other detector, and means for controlling said first and second switch means whereby said pair of transmitting antennas and said pair of detectors are synchronously controlled.
