In accordance with the present invention there is provided an oil-in-water emulsion sunscreen composition comprising (a) a UV active, (b) a first emulsifier having an HLB value less than 5 and (c) optionally a second emulsifier having an HLB value greater than 5 present in an amount of less than 0.2% w/w of the composition. The oil-in-water sunscreen composition is characterized by the absence of an emulsifiable polymer and is capable of providing little to no whitening when applied to wet skin.

Compositions comprising sun-care actives and self adapting polymers are disclosed. Self adapting polymers align themselves with the hydrophilic group pointing to the surface during application thus delivering an aesthetically pleasing surface to the consumers with a pleasant after feel. These polymers then rearrange upon contact with water so that the hydrophobic groups now point to the surface which then increases the water resistance of the formulation.

The invention provides non-aqueous compositions comprising film forming polymers comprising repeating units derived from: (a) at least one monomer comprising at least one functionalized or unfunctionalized acryloyl moiety and at least one lactam moiety; (b) at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of functionalized and unfunctionalized C-Calkyl (alk)acrylates, C-Calkyl (alk)acrylamides, and combinations thereof; and (c) at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of functionalized and unfunctionalized C-Calkyl (alk)acrylates, C-C(alk)alkyl acrylamides, and combinations thereof. The invention further provides applications of these compositions in various industrial arts, particularly in personal care. The invention furthermore provides water-resistant non-aqueous personal care compositions. Variables a, b and c are described herein. 

Non-aqueous compositions of polymers derived from monomers having acryloyl moiety and lactam moiety and applications thereof

A photo protective topical composition, comprising: (i) at least one functional active; and (ii) at least one solubilizing compound having the structure of Formula I: wherein R is C-Ccycloalkyl or linear or branched alkylcycloalkyl, wherein the ring size is C-C; R, R, and Rare each independently selected from the group consisting of H, and linear or branched C-Calkyl, provided that at least two of R, R, Rare H; wherein the solubilizing compound is present in an amount effective to solubilize said functional active. Sun-care products are described that protect from UV radiation and do not turn white when applied to wet skin. The sun-care product may comprise (A) a cosmetically-acceptable, substantially non-aqueous vehicle, and (B) a UV active, wherein said non-aqueous vehicle comprises alcohol in an amount of 50% (w/w) or less based on the weight of the sun-care product and an ester wherein said non-aqueous vehicle comprises at least 10%&#x3e;by weight esters based on the total weight of the non-aqueous vehicle and said sun-care product is substantially non-whitening upon application to wet skin.

Vinyl lactam-derived polymers, compositions thereof having enhanced water-resistance, and methods of use thereof

Disclosed are new and improved antiperspirant/deodorant compositions and methods of reducing perspiration, where the new and improved antiperspirant/deodorant compositions contain a water dispersible organic polymer and can reduce the concentration of active antiperspirant ingredients while maintaining antiperspirant efficacy.

Antiperspirant/deodorant compositions have lower, or even zero amounts of aluminum and/or zirconium antiperspirant actives. A polymer having one or more anhydride and/or diacid moieties, such as succinic (maleic) anhydride and/or diacid. The antiperspirant/deodorant compositions comprise a polymer with a non-zero acid value and a cationic species, which may be a cationic polymer, cationic molecule, cation, and/or a cationic carrier. A non-aqueous, heterogeneous polymerization process comprises heating a reaction mixture of about 5-70%, preferably 10-50%, by weight, of a vinyl amide monomer in an oil as solvent, and a water-soluble cosolvent, and a free radical initiator, optionally in the presence of a crosslinking agent and/or a surfactant, wherein the oil solvent is present in an amount sufficient to keep the resultant polymer in a stirrable state throughout the polymerization. A process of making a homopolymer of vinyl caprolactam (VCL), and a copolymer with dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide (DMAPMA), optionally including with one or more polymerizable monomers (X), in the composition range, by weight, VCL 99 to 30%, DMAPMA 1-70% and monomer X 0-30%, respectively, by suspension polymerization in an aqueous/alcoholic solvent medium, without requiring a protective colloid, which comprises charging vinyl caprolactam in an aqueous/alcoholic solvent mixture, wherein the weight ratio of alcohol to total monomers is &frac16; to 3, and if present, forming a solution of DMAPMA and optional monomers in water, feeding the solution into the VCL charge at a predetermined rate, periodically adding initiator to the reaction mixture, and polymerizing at about 40&deg; to 130&deg; C., and, if desired, neutralizing the product, to form a polymer product at about 5% to 40% solids, homogeneously dispersed in the solvent.
