In one aspect, a method for managing streaming of video content to a client device includes providing the video content to a content distribution network for storage in a plurality of geographically separated resources of the content distribution network, dynamically selecting an advertisement media clip based on statistical information associated with a user of the client device, and receiving, from the client device via a packet-based telecommunication network, signaling to have the stored video content streamed to the client device. In response to the received signaling, the method includes transmitting to the client device via the packet-based telecommunication network and in one or more files having a format compatible with a media player on the client device, (i) an identification of a first resource of the content distribution network available to facilitate streaming of the stored video content to the client device, the identification being dependent at least in part on a relationship between a geographic location of the client device and a geographic location of at least one of the resources of the content distribution network and (ii) an identification of an advertising server, the identification of the advertising server being dependent at least in part on a relationship between the geographic location of the client device and a geographic location of the advertising server, wherein the one or more files, when processed by the client device, cause the client device to communicate with the first resource of the content distribution network and the advertising server to cause the stored video to be streamed to the client device by first resource of the content distribution network and cause the selected advertisement media clip to be streamed from the advertising server to the client device.

System and method for routing media

In one aspect, a method for managing streaming of video content to a client device includes providing the video content to a content distribution network for storage in a plurality of geographically separated resources of the content distribution network, dynamically selecting an advertisement media clip based on statistical information associated with a user of the client device, and receiving, from the client device via a packet-based telecommunication network, signaling to have the stored video content streamed to the client device. In response to the received signaling, the method includes transmitting to the client device via the packet-based telecommunication network and in one or more files having a format compatible with a media player on the client device, (i) an identification of a first resource of the content distribution network available to facilitate streaming of the stored video content to the client device, the identification being dependent at least in part on a relationship between a geographic location of the client device and geographic locations of the resources of the content distribution network and (ii) an identification of an advertising server, the identification of the advertising server being dependent at least in part on a relationship between the geographic location of the client device and a geographic location of the advertising server, wherein the one or more files, when processed by the client device, cause the client device to communicate with the first resource of the content distribution network and the advertising server to cause the stored video to be streamed to the client device by first resource of the content distribution network and cause the selected advertisement media clip to be streamed from the advertising server to the client device.

In one aspect, a method for managing streaming of video content to a client device includes providing the video content to a content distribution network for storage in a plurality of geographically separated resources of the content distribution network and receiving, from the client device via a packet-based telecommunication network, signaling to have the stored video content streamed to the client device. In response to the received signaling, one or more files are transmitted to the client device via the packet-based telecommunication network, each of the one or more files being in a format compatible with a media player on the client device, the one or more files comprising (i) an identification of one or more of the resources of the content distribution network available to facilitate streaming of one or more segments of the stored video content to the client device, the identification being dependent at least in part on a relationship between a geographic location of the client device and geographic locations of the resources of the content distribution network, and (ii) an identification of an advertising server, the identification of the advertising server being dependent at least in part on a relationship between the geographic location of the client device and a geographic location of the advertising server, wherein the one or more files, when processed by the client device, cause the client device to communicate with the identified one or more resources of the content distribution network and the advertising server to cause the one or more segments of the stored video to be streamed to the client device by the identified one or more resources of the content distribution network and cause one or more advertisements to be streamed from the advertising server to the client device.

A video streaming system comprises a plurality of servers, each of the plurality of servers including one or more processors and a memory. One or more of the plurality of servers receive video content from a video content owner and store the received video content in a plurality of geographically separated resources of a content distribution network. The one or more of the plurality of servers receive from a client device via a packet-based telecommunication network signaling to have the stored video content streamed to the client device from one or more of the resources of the content distribution network. In response to the received signaling, the one or more of the plurality of servers transmit to the client device, via the packet-based telecommunication network and in one or more files, each of the one or more files being in a format compatible with a media player on the client device, (i) an identification of one or more of the resources of the content distribution network available to facilitate streaming of one or more segments of the stored video content to the client device, the identification being dependent at least in part on a relationship between a geographic location of the client device and geographic locations of the resources of the content distribution network, and (ii) an identification of an advertising server, the identification of the advertising server being dependent at least in part on a relationship between the geographic location of the client device and a geographic location of the advertising server, wherein the one or more files, when processed by the client device cause the client device to communicate with the identified one or more resources of the content distribution network and the advertising server to cause the one or more segments of the stored video to be streamed to the client device by the identified one or more resources of the content distribution network and cause one or more advertisements to be streamed from the advertising server to the client device.

The system and method for streaming media to a viewer and managing the media comprises an enhanced service routing processor (ESRP), a real time switch management system (RTSMS), a name routing processor (NRP), and a managed media switch (MMS). The RTSMS has a reservation system. The ESRP receives media from an owner, manages the media according to media rules and order rules defined by the owner, and distributes the media to one or more switches, such as the MMS, according to the media rules and the order rules. The RTSMS is configured to receive the media rules and to receive a viewer's media request via the reservation server. The reservation system of the RTSMS processes the media request according to the media rules and builds a reservation for the requested media. The RTSMS generates the reservation to the viewer and to the NRP. The NRP receives the reservation data from the viewer and from the RTSMS. The NRP processes the reservation data and locates an MMS that can stream the media to the viewer. The NRP transmits the IP address of the MMS to the viewer and transmits the reservation data to the MMS. The viewer initiates a session or connection with the MMS using the reservation number. If the reservation data from the viewer matches the reservation data from the NRP, the MMS streams the media to the viewer.

A video streaming system comprises one or more servers, each of the one or more servers including one or more processors and a memory. The one or more servers receive signaling from a client device via a packet-based telecommunication network. In response to the received signaling, the one or more servers transmit to the client device, via the packet-based telecommunication network, one or more files in a format compatible with a media player on the client device, the one or more files including (i) an indication of one or more segments of video content, (ii) one or more URLs identifying one or more resources of a content distribution network available to facilitate streaming of the one or more segments and one or more advertisements to the client device, (iii) information instructing the client device how to communicate with the one or more resources to cause the one or more segments of the video content and the one or more advertisements to be streamed to the client device in a predetermined sequence, and (iv) an identifier uniquely associated with the client device and a viewing session for the video content.
