An apparatus for separating the spine, cover portion, and pages of a book utilizing a holding structure for supporting the book in a certain position. While supported by the holding structure, the book is transported to a cutter where the cutter severs the spine from the remainder of the book. The cover and pages are then conveyed from contact with the cutter and the cover is separated from the pages.

Book recycling apparatus

A press-on closure 10 for a tubular container 12. The closure includes a molded plastic frame 14 having a ledge 28 on which an end panel 16 is seated and to which the end panel is peelably secured. The end panel has a free outer peripheral edge unbonded to the frame. The resultant closed container is subject to retorting with the result that heretofore the end panel could axially outwardly deform and possibly initiate internal peeling. To prevent this peeling, the frame is provided with a thin flexible integral flange 36 forming a continuation of the ledge on which the end panel is seated. The end panel is also peelably bonded to the flange and the flange deforms or deflects with the end panel. The frame has a press fit onto the container, which is preferably in the form of a metal can, which at the end thereof to be closed by the closure is provided with a radially outwardly directed curl 48. The curl terminates in a raw edge 54 and is so shaped that when it is seated within a groove in the underside of the frame, the raw edge is embedded in a skirt portion of the frame to permanently and sealingly lock the curl within the frame.

Press-on closure with peelable end panel

A reclosable closure for containers of the type used for keeping or storing product for some time following initial opening of the container. Typical uses would be for snack foods such as candies, peanuts, etc., and powdered products such as sugar, coffee, tea and other beverage mixes and the like. The closure also is adaptable for use with canned vagetables and meats and also with non-food products such as, for example, nails, tacks and a myriad of similar hardware items. The preferred closure includes an end panel and a ring-shaped frame member which are fused or otherwise adhered together during insert-injection molding of the frame member. Means are provided on the frame member for contacting an edge of the end panel, or an integral pull tab thereon, for restraining the end panel in a position for reclosing the container.

Reclosable container closure

A multiwalled plastic container and method for making the same is disclosed having a barrier liner and an outer wall providing structural support for the liner. The container provides increased protection against separation of the liner and structural wall especially at the rim defining the opening of the container. This is accomplished by a wrap around liner lip construction wherein the liner extends from the inside surface of the structural wall around the top rim surface of the wall and downwardly depends therefrom along the outer surface of the structural wall. To downwardly depending leg of the liner lip is recessed within the outer wall surface providing adding protection against liner separation.

Multiwalled container and method of making same

A process for thermoforming laminated hollow articles including a plurality of processing steps wherein a thermoplastic material heated to a plastic state is selectively deposited area-wise on a sheet of thermoplastic material and such resulting laminate of thermoplastic materials is positioned proximate to a female mold of a thermoforming apparatus including preferably a plug assist for a subsequent forming of laminated hollow articles.

Process for making containers

A process for forming a hollow multilayered thermoplastic article utilizing a liner and a core rod formed at least in part of a porous metal and having a blow slot. A vacuum is applied to the liner through the porous metal part of the core rod and optionally the blow slot and blowing pressure is applied through the blow slot.

Process for making multilayered containers

A blow slot equipped core rod assembly which incorporates a porous metal wall portion. Internal conduit means in the assembly permit a fluid (such as air, or the like) to be supplied to said blow slot (when open) and to such porous metal wall portion under superatmospheric or under subatmospheric pressure. The core rod is particularly useful in the manufacture of multilayered thermoplastic containers by injection blow molding procedures.

Porous core rod

Improved apparatus for forming multilayered thermoplastic articles employing a blow slot equipped, porous metal section equipped core rod. In addition to control means, the apparatus employs means for opening and closing the blow slot of the core rod, detachable connection means for connecting an internal fluid passageway in said core rod with a vacuum source, and other detachable connection means for connecting such internal fluid passageway with a pressurized fluid source. In addition, check valve means is provided for closing said internal fluid passageway when the internal fluid passageway is detached from the detachable connection means joining such with a vacuum source. The vacuum source is connectable with the core rod at the time of liner loading and the pressurized fluid source is connected with the core rod at the time of blow molding.

Apparatus for making multilayered containers

A process and apparatus for forming a laminated plastic article, especially a container. In one formation sequence, a flattened preform of desired perimeter configuration is formed, which preferably is multilayered, directly from thermoplastic materials. In another formation sequence, a preform is positioned in a thermoforming apparatus wherein, with edge portions of the preform is clamped and the midportions are mandrel-formed into a body having continuous integral side and bottom wall portions. This body is then trimmed and blow-molded to produce a desired product article. Residual portions of the starting preform can be trimmed away from the lip portions of the product article if desired.

Process for forming a plastic article

Apparatus and method for draw molding elongated hollow articles from thermoplastic material which is desirably stretch moldable plastic sheet or film. The material is draw molded on an elongated mandrel. Draw ring means are operated cooperatively with the mandrel for drawing the thermoplastic material into an elongated hollow article. Gaseous jet stream doctoring means are operated during drawing for controlling the article wall thickness. The material may be drawn through a wiper ring through which the mandrel is moved with the thermoplastic material during draw molding in combination with subjecting the outer surface of the article being drawn to the action of the doctoring jet stream from an annular orifice. Internal fluid conditioning of the mandrel, as well as alternate negative pressure within the article during molding and stripping pressure from the mandrel into the article at conclusion of molding cycle are provided for. The draw molding is effected without clamping the thermoplastic material.

Draw-forming of stretchable thermoplastic material into hollow articles

There is disclosed a thermoforming process and apparatus or machine including a male mold assembly and a pressure box or a female mold assembly disposed on support members or platens maintained in fixed relationship to each other whereby the pressure box assembly is first caused to pass through the plane of the heated plastic material whereafter the male mold then is caused to move into the pressure box together with the simultaneous introduction of controlled amounts of a pressurized fluid until complete interrelationship is attained with relative movement of the male mold to the pressure box being continued to a point proximate the plane of heated thermoplastic material as more clearly hereinafter discussed.

Apparatus for thermoforming hollow article having a high L/D ratio

There is disclosed a novel apparatus for thermoforming a plastic article wherein the male mold assembly and the female mold assembly are disposed on support members which are maintained in fixed relationship to each other during thermoforming operation. The sheet of thermoforming material after initial heating is trapped by clamping devices associated with the assemblies with the male die and female die molds associated with the male and female mold assemblies, respectively, being operated by fluid cylinder assemblies motivated by pressurized fluid.

Apparatus for thermoforming plastic articles

Process for thermoforming hollow articles having large length to diameter ratios. A male mold assembly having an extendible head portion formed of a porous metal is employed with the male mold being passed through the plane of a heated plastic sheet while a vacuum is drawn through the porous metal head portion to draw the sheet against the male mold. The extendible head portion is extended to increase the depth of the formed article.
