Continuous production of arylene sulfide polymer is provided in a series of two or more reactors. A compound serving as a sulfur source is contacted in an organic amide with a dihalo aromatic compound and, optionally, at least one polymerization modifying compound to produce arylene sulfide polymer. The reaction mixture boils in each of a series of reaction zones to partially concentrate the mixture by removal of water and diluent and to remove polymerization heat. The degree of removal of water and organic amide is regulated to control the pressure in each boiling reactor so that polymer slurry is induced to flow to each subsequent reaction zone without pumping. Preferably an ascending reactor temperature profile is employed.

An unsaturated alicyclic carbinol or dicarbinol, e.g., 4-cyclohexene methanol or 4-cyclohexene-1,2-dimethanol, is obtained by subjecting a diolefin oxidation product, i.e., a polymeric peroxide, e.g., 1,3-butadiene polyperoxide, to Oxo reaction conditions, including an elevated temperature of the order of about 100.degree. to about 200.degree. C and carbon monoxide and hydrogen under elevated pressure in presence of a metal carbonyl catalyst, subjecting reaction mixture thus obtained to known hydrogenation or reducing conditions to convert carbonylic groups to hydroxyl groups employing a catalyst and hydrogen or a reducing agent, e.g., LiAlH.sub.4, the conditions being selective to preserve the unsaturated linkage desired in the product.

A method is provided for producing a reaction mixture comprising arylene sulfide polymer that can be subjected to distillation and extraction with water and readily filtered to recover the arylene sulfide polymer. The method entails preparing a composition of at least one alkali metal bisulfide and at least one organic amide, then admixing at least one alkali metal hydroxide into this composition and introducing p-dihalobenzene into the mixture thus produced, then subjecting the mixture to polymerization conditions for a time sufficient to form an arylene sulfide polymer.
