A method and system for controlling output torque of an internal combustion engine during a gearshift in an automatic shift manual transmission coupled to the engine is disclosed. The transmission includes a multiplicity of gears and a clutch actuated by a transmission control unit (TCU), which controls clutch disengagement, gear change, and clutch re-engagement. The engine includes an engine control unit in communication with the TCU. The method includes determining engine operator demanded engine torque; sending a signal to the engine control unit in response to actuation of the clutch; and, computing in the engine control unit in response to the sent clutch actuation signal and the determined engine operator demanded engine torque, a control signal for the engine, such engine, in response to such control signal changing engine torque during the gear change to substantially match demanded engine torque when the clutch is re-engaged.

Method for managing engine torque during a gear shift in an automatic shift manual transmission

A system and method for monitoring catalytic converter efficiency monitor the switch ratio of upstream and downstream exhaust gas oxygen sensors based on an acceptable temperature range of the catalytic converter. In one embodiment, catalytic converter temperature is determined based on exhaust gas temperature. The exhaust gas temperature may be used to infer the temperature of the catalytic converter mid-bed. The efficiency may be determined based on a correspondence with a number of mass air flow ranges. The system and method may also use vehicle speed and EGR to assure that the monitor samples data during repeatable, robust load-speed-temperature conditions. Switch data is stored in keep-alive memory to increase the confidence of the efficiency determination due to a larger data collection phase. A filter having a cycle based constant may be used to filter a current switch ratio before incorporating it into an average switch ratio.

A system and method for monitoring catalytic converter efficiency monitor the switch ratio of upstream and downstream exhaust gas oxygen sensors based on an acceptable temperature range of the catalytic converter mid-bed for each of a number of mass air flow ranges. An on-board diagnostic test for an exhaust gas oxygen sensor includes sensing the output of the oxygen sensor and summing the output over a specified period to determine the length of the trace of the sensor voltage versus time. Such length over a given time period indicates the activity of the sensor. This data is compared to a threshold to determine if the exhaust gas oxygen sensor meets certain performance requirements.

On-board diagnostic test of oxygen sensor

An air/fuel control system (10) and method for an engine (28) coupled to a catalytic converter (50) includes monitoring of the converter (50). Engine air/fuel ratio is controlled (104-178) in response to a pair of two-state signals generated by comparing the outputs of respective upstream (44, 55) and downstream (52) exhaust gas oxygen sensors to a reference voltage. The transitions in the downstream sensor are indicated when a difference in its output amplitude changes signs and a difference between stored peak values occurring during two successive changes in the sign exceeds a predetermined value (200-350). Converter efficiency is indicated from a ratio of transitions in the downstream sensor transitions to transitions in the upstream sensor output which are generated in a similar manner (690-770).
