An automotive interior component, such as a headrest or armrest, including a U-shaped tubular support frame for supporting the interior component. A blow molded or injection molded bun is molded directly onto a portion of the frame structure. A resilient urethane foam pad is secured to a surface of a fabric, vinyl or leather trim cover and the molded bun is enveloped by the trim cover and foam pad. Alternatively, the molded pad is formed by first and second half shell with the frame structure received and secured between the half shells. The half shells and interconnected with the frame structure there between and enveloped by the trim cover and foam pad. A method of manufacturing the interior component includes placing the frame structure in a mold, molding the rigid bun about a portion of the frame structure to form the contoured shape of the interior component, removing the rigid bun and frame structure from the mold, securing a resilient foam pad onto a surface of a trim cover, and enveloping the rigid bun in the trim cover and foam pad.

Method of manufacturing an interior automotive component and components made therefrom

A method and apparatus is disclosed whereby an assist fixture is provided to clamp about a seat assembly, whereupon both are immersed in a bed apparatus and into a pressed relation against a cushion of hot air. The seat assembly includes a preformed flexible pad having an appearance surface and a cover adapted to be adhesively bonded to the pad during the immersion. The assist fixture includes tubular members which press the cover into preformed indentations in the appearance face of the pad to assist in enhancing surface definition, the tubular members can be adapted to pass hot or cold air depending on the stage of the process.

Method for bonding a cover to a flexible pad

An assist fixture is provided to clamp about a seat assembly, whereupon each are immersed into pressed relation against a heated fluidized bed. The seat assembly includes a preformed flexible pad having an appearance surface and a cover adapted to be adhesively bonded to the pad during the immersion. The assist fixture includes tubular members which press the cover into preformed indentations in the appearance face of the pad to assist in enhancing surface definition, the tubular members being adapted to pass hot or cold air depending on the stage of the process.

An armrest assembly (10, 110, 210) is provided for pivotal attachment to an automotive seat (16). The armrest assembly (10, 110, 210) includes a cellular foam armrest pad (26, 126, 226) and an armrest cover (28, 128, 228) disposed about the armrest pad (26, 126, 226). The assembly (10, 110, 210) further includes a receptacle (46, 146, 246) for receiving and supporting a beverage container (C) and which is formed of a pliable, vacuum formable vinyl material to maintain the 'soft touch' characteristic of the armrest assembly (10, 110, 210). A method is also provided for making the armrest assembly (10, 110, 210).
