An accessory connector () and a method () for providing a robust submersible seal is provided. The method can include over molding () a high-temperature plastic () around a plurality of interconnect pins () to produce a header (), over molding () a low-temperature plastic () to the header to produce an insert (), over molding () a side connector assembly () along a periphery of the insert to produce an interface (), and ultrasonically welding () the insert to a housing () to blend () the low-temperature plastic with the housing.

A radio housing (101) includes first and second retention mechanisms (216, 218) on both its back and bottom surfaces (104, 106) for selectively retaining a variety of battery form factors and providing a variety of radio configurations.

A mounting tray (106) for securing an electronic device includes a planar surface (112) having upstanding side supports (112) and a rear cantilevered member (140). The mounting tray (106) further includes front raised portions (116) having protruding tabs (118) for engaging the electronic device and securing the front of the electronic device. The mounting tray (106) also includes a latching member having at least one aperture (110 and 124) and an upturned latching bracket (108) which are used to engage with the electronic device.

Environmental radio guard

A retaining washer (100) prevents the rotation of a D-shaped shaft (106) which is mounted in a round hole (105a) of a housing (105). The retaining washer includes a substantially flat washer (101) having a hole (101a). A tapered tab (102) includes a wide end (102a) and a narrow end (102b). The tab is attached to the flat washer at the wide end such that the tab is substantially perpendicular to the flat washer. A gusset (103) is attached between the tab and the flat washer. The gusset includes a lower edge (103a) which is positioned at an obtuse angle (104) relative to the flat washer. The gusset indents into the housing (105b) and the tab is forced against the flat portion (106b) of the D-shaped shaft. The upper left and right edges of the tab cut into the wall of the housing hole (105c and 105d).

Two related miniature components are attached to opposite sides of an insulating base member. There are conductive pads and through-holes in the base member. The conductive areas on each component are wire-bonded to adjacent conductive areas on the base member. Some of the latter are coupled to the bottom surface of the assembly but the connections between the two components are made via metallization in the through-holes. Insulating covers seal each side of the assembly and the entire assembly may be reflow soldered to external circuitry.

Dual electronic component assembly

A battery as for a miniature communication device is retained within a hollow knurled knob captivated within the device housing. The side of the knob projects from the housing to provide thumb control of the switch, and has an open side portion to provide battery access. Spring contacts access the battery terminals through apertures in the knob. Function indicia are provided on the knob and are visible on the projecting portion as appropriate.

An access panel as for a small apparatus housing has a pivot pin with retracting ends for cooperating with a fixed point socket during normal operation. Excess force causes the pivot pin to translate onto a camming surface, which leads to the outer surface of the housing whereby the pin ends retract, and the door is released without damage.

An improved housing assembly for housing miniaturized electrical or electronic apparatus, such as a radio receiver or monitor, is disclosed wherein a single piece housing is provided, open at the top for receiving an associated electrical chassis with self-contained battery compartment and a sound transducer. A control panel attached to the electrical chassis cooperates to overfit the open end of said housing to complete the overall assembly. The assemblage of the housing apparatus requires no screws, fasteners or special tools as the respective component parts effect a snap-fit with one another. A novel interlocking arrangement between chassis assembly and housing disguises the latching interfit therebetween, which nevertheless may be released by the insertion of a simple blade tool at the proper location. Complete shock mounting and protection from dust and dirt is effected by resilient gasket elements in cooperation with the housing and chassis assembly. A transparent lens cover is incorporated on a portion of the bottom panel to overlie an information placard referencing operational data but which, in addition, includes features which show if unauthorized access has been effected to the internal chassis assembly.
