In an on-line banking system including a central computer and at least one remote terminal, a method of an apparatus for verifying that a holder of an identification card is authorized to complete a transaction at the terminal is disclosed. Account number data are machine read from the card, scrambled, and then compared to secret alphanumeric data, keyboard entered by the card holder at the terminal. The secret alphanumeric data are converted to a digital signal, and the signal is converted into first and second signal portions. The first signal portion is compared to the scrambled account number data. If the comparison is positive, the second signal portion, along with keyboard-entered transaction data and account number data, is transmitted to the central computer. Since only the second signal portion of the keyboard-entered secret data is transmitted on-line to the central computer, it is impossible to determine the entire secret data for gaining unauthorized use of the terminal by monitoring the line between the terminal and the central computer. At the central computer, the second signal portion is compared with a reference signal stored on the authorized holder's account and addressed by the account number data. In response to a positive comparison, the central computer authorizes the remote terminal to complete the requested transaction.

On-line verification system for identification card or the like

A banking system, equipment and operations are provided which dispense cash at an unmanned station from a money vault unit at a remote station to a customer who verifies his identity at the unmanned station. The system and equipment also may accept deposits from the customer at the unmanned station and convey the deposits to a depository unit at the remote station. The unmanned station may be combined in a blank drive-up or walk-up service unit served by a teller located at either the unmanned or the remote station during business hours. The automatic equipment at the unmanned station and the money vault and depository units at the remote station provide maximum security for money or articles handled. Along with this security feature, the automatic equipment does not require the presence of a teller to provide banking services for customers during non-business hours.

Automatic remote banking system and equipment

Automatic banking system equipment which presents at a remote customer station a unit enabling a customer to carry out any one of a number of banking services, such as depositing, making payments of various types, transferring funds between accounts, or withdrawing cash. The equipment has programmable display means to instruct the customer as to the steps or procedure to be followed in completing a selected banking transaction; also, manual entry keyboard means in which the customer makes various data entries according to the programmable display instructions to enable verification of identity and authorization of procedure through coded means presented by the customer at the remote unit to activate the equipment, and to indicate, for example, the amount of money to be withdrawn or details concerning any other banking transaction; and, also, cash dispensing and delivery mechanism activated by the keyboard means in accordance with instructions given at the programmable display means following verification that the coded means presented is valid and genuine, is presented by an authorized individual, and that the banking transaction may be completed.
