Described herein is an extravasation tester that pinches an infusion line closed between a wheel and a platen, and then peristaltically withdraws fluid into the infusion line as the wheel is rolled away from a puncture site. Extravasation is determined to have occurred if little or no blood appears in a sight chamber positioned near the puncture site when a test fluid is withdrawn into the infusion line from the puncture site.

Extravasation detection apparatus and methods

Apparatus and methods are provided for separately preheating gaseous ammonia and an oxygen-containing gas mixture, combusting them to form a hydrogen-containing gas mixture, and cooling the hydrogen-containing gas mixture in conjunction with the preheating of the next ammonia and the preheating of the next oxygen-containing gas mixture. Combustion may occur at combinations of pressure and temperature that permit rapid and non-catalyzed decomposition of the ammonia.

Pressurized and superheated, dry steam is admitted into the working chamber of a spark ignition engine for the purpose of increasing the thermal efficiency of the engine. The steam is admitted into the working chamber near the end of compression, and before ignition of the fuel. An igniter ignites the fuel. Additional work is pneumatically recovered from the steam, thus augmenting the total work obtained by the engine.

High efficiency, ternary mix engine

Apparatus, methods and systems reside in the decomposition of ammonia into a hydrogen gas mixture. An ammonia-rich gaseous mixture containing ammonia and oxygen enters into a conduit within which combustion and decomposition of the mixture is initiated, thereby liberating hydrogen. A mixture of gaseous products resulting from the reaction is expelled from the outlet of the conduit, the mixture including non-combusted hydrogen gas, which may then be used for other purposes. In the preferred embodiment, the incoming reactants including ammonia and oxygen are heat exchanged with the outgoing product mixture containing non-combusted hydrogen gas.

Ammonia flame cracker system, method and apparatus

Apparatus, methods and systems reside in the decomposition of ammonia into a hydrogen-containing product mixture. An ammonia-rich gaseous mixture containing ammonia and oxygen enters a conduit, within which combustion and decomposition of the mixture is initiated, thereby liberating hydrogen. A mixture of products, resulting from the reactions, is expelled from the outlet of the conduit, the mixture including non-combusted hydrogen gas, which may then be used for other purposes. The incoming reactants, including ammonia and oxygen, are heat exchanged with the outgoing product mixture containing non-combusted hydrogen gas.

Described herein are various embodiments of an apparatus, system and method for operating a dual fueled spark ignition engine. For example, according to one illustrative embodiment, a method for operating a dual fueled spark ignition engine includes fueling the engine solely with a combustion promoter within a first engine load range between zero and an engine load associated with a target combustion condition selected from the group consisting of rough limit, knock limit, and any of various conditions between the rough limit and knock limit. Within the first engine load range, the amount of combustion promoter fueling the engine increases as the load increases. The method further includes fueling the engine on a mixture of ammonia and the combustion promoter within a second engine load range between the engine load associated with the selected target combustion condition and the engine load associated with a maximum operating pressure of the engine. Within the second engine load range, the amount of ammonia fueling the engine increases and the amount of combustion promoter fueling the engine remains substantially constant as the load increases.

Apparatus, system and method for operating a dual fueled spark ignition engine

An apparatus and method for the self-measurement of intraocular pressure utilize a tonometer disposed within a housing and having a tonometer tip. The apparatus further includes an adjustment mechanism in communication with the tonometer for positioning the tonometer tip in contact with a test eye of the user, and an illuminator mounted within the housing adjacent the tonometer tip. A receiver is aligned with the tonometer tip for receiving an applanation pattern created by contact of the tonometer tip with the test eye, and a display is provided in communication with the receiver for displaying the applanation pattern to an observing eye of the user. The intraocular pressure of the test eye is determined from a force applied by the tonometer tip upon observation of a selected applanation pattern by the observing eye.

A method and apparatus for non-invasively determining the concentration of a substance in blood, such as glucose, include a sample portion arranged for contacting an eye region of a user to obtain a tear fluid sample, a sensor in communication with the sample portion for generating a signal related to the tear substance concentration, and a processor in communication with the sensor for determining a blood substance concentration corresponding to the tear substance concentration.

Method and apparatus for non-invasive monitoring of blood substances using self-sampled tears

An improved punctum plug is more easily visualized when positioned within a punctual canal of a recipient. The body of the plug features an outwardly exposed surface when properly positioned, and a substance causing at least the outwardly exposed surface to contrast with surrounding tissue, such that the use of the substance causes the plug to be more easily visualized than if the substance were not present. The substance, which may be disposed on the outwardly exposed surface or within the body of the plug, may include a saturated coloration, or may be phosphorescent, fluorescent or otherwise operative to reflect or re-radiate light to assist in visualization. For example, the substance may include an organic or inorganic phosphor or fluorescent material, reflective beads, quantum dots, a dye or pigment. Such reflection or re-radiation may occur at the same or different wavelength(s) compared to the illumination wavelength(s), whether or not either or both are within the visible part of the spectrum. If outside the visible region, a detector may be employed according to the invention for detecting the radiated light. A system for determining whether or not a punctum plug is positioned within the punctal canal of a person's eye is also enclosed, including at least one optical element permitting the eye to view itself, to be viewed by the other eye, or by a second person.

More easily visualized punctum plug configurations

A pneumatically-powered battering ram for striking objects quickly and effectively with an initial high striking velocity resulting in an increased peak force effective in breaking the target object. The battering ram includes an elongated hollow housing containing a mass to be propelled, preferably a piston, and a supply of compressed gas, preferably carbon dioxide disposed within the housing. A valve mechanism releases a portion of the compressed gas into a charge cavity located between the piston and the supply of compressed gas. A sear mechanism holds the piston in place against the pressure of the compressed gas in the charge cavity. When the battering ram is swung at an object such as a door, a trigger mechanism releases the sear mechanism which in turn releases the piston. The piston is then accelerated forward by the compressed gas charge. Consequently, as the ram reaches the door, so does the piston which is traveling at a much higher velocity than could be obtained solely by manual swinging. As a result, the peak force initially imparted upon the door is greater and the door is broken down in a quick and efficient manner.

Pneumatically-powered battering ram

The present invention is an optical probe for emission of light from a region smaller than a wavelength. The optical probe includes a transmission line fed by an optic fiber and an impedance matched coupling. In a first embodiment the optical probe ends with a surface-wave transmission line including a central conductor and a coaxial dielectric. The diameter of the central conductor at the optic fiber is selected to substantially match the transmission impedance of the surface-wave transmission line to that of the optic fiber. The diameter of the central conductor decreases to a diameter smaller than the use wavelength at the tip end. The far end of the dielectric preferably includes a concavity to shape the resulting electric fields. In an alternative embodiment, the optical probe includes a coaxial transmisson line. The optic fiber includes a section having a decreasing diameter outer cladding and a section having no outer cladding. The coaxial transmission line includes a central conductor and a dielectric having a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the core. An outer conductive layer is concentric with the two sections of the optic fiber and the dielectric. In a further alternative embodiment the impedance matched coupling includes a resonant cavity tunable to minimize the voltage standing wave ratio in the optic fiber.
