A system for inputting signals to a terminal includes a first interface having an input port, the first interface including a decoder for decoding the signals received at said port for application to the terminal. Two external sources of signals are OR'ed to the same port. One or both the sources may include an external input device and an interface for translating signals from a first code output from the input device to a second code which the first interface is adapted to accept. In order to OR the outputs of the sources, the sources may have open collector output transistors connected to a common collector resistor in the first interface.

The attenuation of RF pulses passing through a mineral slurry is determined by measuring the amplitude of the envelope produced by a series of successively occurring attenuated electrical pulses. The pulses are applied to the input of a variable gain amplifier, the gain of which is under control of a digital processor. The peak amplitude of each pulse is compared with a fixed reference voltage. The contents of a storage register associated with the processor is modified dependent upon whether the pulse amplitude is geater or less than the reference voltage. The contents of the register is used to control the gain of the variable gain amplifier in such a way that the amplitude of the next successive pulse will approach the value of the reference voltage. After the last pulse has been measured, the gain of the amplifier is inversely proportional to the amplitude of the pulse envelope, and the contents of the successive approximation register will also be proportional to the amplitude of the pulse envelope. The system may be calibrated using a precision attenuator to establish the degree of attenuation when no slurry is present.

Successive approximation envelope detection for estimating the amplitude

An improved high resolution rotating head ultrasonic scanner is provided for use in an ultrasonic scanning subsystem of an ultrasonic breast scanning system. The scanning subsystem of the breast scanning system includes a pair of high resolution ultrasonic rotating scanning heads mounted on a transport mechanism. A scan is conducted by moving the transport mechanism while the scanning heads rotate so that a series of parallel uniformly spaced cross-sectional scans of the tissue of the breast are conducted from the inferior to the superior border of the breast. Each scanning head has three ultrasonic transducers uniformly spaced around its perimeter. The focal ranges of the transducers of a given scanning head are chosen so that a sector scan conducted by each head is divided into slightly overlapping zones with the depth of each zone corresponding to the focal range of one of the transducers on each scanning head. The angular velocity and phase of the scanning heads are controlled so that during one revolution of the scanning heads each transducer of each head conducts a sector scan primarily through its zone. However, only one such transducer will conduct such a scan at any one time.

Method and apparatus for optically recording and reproducing video signals. The intensity of a laser beam is modulated as a function of the amplitude of the video signals. The modulated laser beam is caused to conduct a raster scan synchronized by standard TV sync pulses and used to expose photographic film. Horizontal and vertical sync bars of contrasting optical density are recorded beyond the borders of the raster. The developed film is a directly viewable reproduction of the image scanned to produce the video signals recorded. To reproduce the video signals, an unmodulated laser beam conducts a raster scan of the developed image recorded on the film. The intensity of the scanning beam is modulated by the optical density of the film and converted to amplitude modulated electrical signals, a reproduction of the video signals recorded. The optically recorded sync bars are also detected and are used to produce electrical sync pulses to position the raster scan conducted by the unmodulated beam to substantially overlie the image recorded on the film being scanned.

Method and apparatus for recording and reproducing on film directly

A scan converter storage surface is divided into image spaces corresponding to different points in the heart cycle. Ultrasound echoes from heart structures are plotted in the image spaces by means of special x, y sweeps which are offset to the image spaces by timing circuitry. Separate delay and spacing counters allow the first image to be stored at one interval after detection of the ECG R-wave and successive images to be stored at a another uniform interval. An ECG trace is stored in the first image space with cursors indicating the selected image timing. The scan converter is read out to a TV display. During image build-up, the read and write modes alternate. If desired, the TV sweeps to the scan converter may be attenuated and offset to display a single stored image. Images displayed in sequence provide animation. A self test circuit substitutes a fake ECG and writes bars in the scan converter image spaces using TV sweeps for the scan sweeps. The timing circuitry for the normal images gates the video for the bars. All of the timing for the system is derived from a TV composite sync signal and the patient's ECG current.
