A novel laminate of a partially-demetallized polymeric material web and stiff card is used to effect microwave reconstitution of frozen pizza with a more uniform cooking than previously achieved. The polymeric material web includes a metallized region having a central portion which has a first metal density and a peripheral portion having a lesser metal density. A novel demetallizing process is employed to achieve such differential metal density by applying etchant-resistant material to the metal surface through screen prior to etching, with the number of screen lines being varied to change the density.

Process for making an element for microwave heating

Patterned laminates are formed by printing an image of an etchant on one web and laminating the printed web so that the image is sandwiched between the webs in contact with a metallized film. The etchant then dissolves the metallized surface in the printed areas to provide the desired pattern. The resulting laminate may be used as packaging material.

Production of demetallized packaging material

Demetallizing method and apparatus capable of high speed continuous production of selectively patterned metallized film, particularly polymeric film, useful in packaging products are disclosed. A water-based varnish having etchant dissolved therein is printed on the metallized surface in a desired pattern, the spent etchant solution is washed from the etched surface while the other surface is maintained out of contact with the wash water, and the etched web is dried.

Demetallizing method

A packaging structure formed of flexible polymeric material is disclosed. A resealable seal is provided to permit opening and reclosing of the package to permit multiple time access to the contents of the package. A tamper-evident indicator is provided in association with the resealable seal to indicate whether or not undesired access to the contents has been had. The tamper-evident indicator comprises a permanent heat seal spaced from the resealable seal and a tear strip between the two seals. When the tear strip is present, the permanent seal maintains the structure closed while removal of the tear strip permits opening of the resealable seal.

Packaging structure

Demetallizing method and apparatus capable of high speed continuous production of selectively patterned metallized polymeric film useful in packaging products are disclosed. Aqueous etchant solution is spray applied to the metallized surface having a pattern of etchant-resistant material applied thereto, the spent etchant solution is spray washed from the surface, and the washed web is dried by hot air drying. Etchant removes metal from exposed areas of the surface of the film while leaving the pattern unaffected, so as to provide a desired visible pattern.

Demetallizing method and apparatus

A pattern is formed in rapid and continuous manner on aluminized polymer film by printing the aluminum surface with a sodium hydroxide-resistant material, which may be pigmented, contacting the non-overprinted areas of the aluminum with hot aqueous sodium hydroxide solution to dissolve the aluminum rapidly from the base polymeric film and leave unaffected the overprinted areas, and washing the spent sodium hydroxide solution from the film. The steps are carried on a continuous web of aluminized film and result in pattern of opaque areas and transparent areas, corresponding to the overprinted and non-overprinted areas of the film.
