Adaptive power management for a data storage device (DSD). A command rate is determined for service requests received by the DSD and a latency is determined for the DSD in performing service requests. The command rate and the latency are used to determine a probability of receiving no service requests within a time interval and power states of the DSD are managed based on the probability of receiving no service requests.

A current used by the DSD is monitored and it is determined whether the current exceeds a current threshold. An arrangement, a method and a system to read information stored in a layer of ferroelectric media. The arrangement includes a layer including a ferroelectric media having one or more ferroelectric domains holding bit charges, a domain corresponding to information; a probe having a tip, wherein the media and the tip are adapted to move relative to one another such that the tip scans the ferroelectric domains of the media while applying a contact force to the domains to generate a direct piezoelectric effect within the domains; and circuitry coupled to the tip and adapted to generate a signal in response to an electrical coupling between the tip and the domains while scanning the tip in contact with the domains, the signal corresponding to a readout signal for ferroelectric bit charges stored in the media.

According to embodiments of the present invention, a probe storage medium includes a conductive layer as an electrode and a metal, metalloid, and/or non-metal doped diamond-like carbon (DLC) layer disposed on the conductive layer. A probe array may be positioned close proximity with the layer of doped DLC. An individual probe in the probe array may have an atomic force microscope tip. The probe storage medium may be written to by applying a current, voltage, and/or power to the tip between a thresholds current, voltage, and/or power value and a limiting current, voltage, and/or power value. The current, voltage, and/or power cause the layer of DLC to change conductance. The probe storage medium may be read by applying a current, voltage, and/or power to the tip below a threshold current, voltage, and/or power value and sensing the conductance.

A disk drive includes a rotatable data storage disk, an interface, a transducer, a write buffer, an actuator, and a controller. The transducer is configured to read and write data on the disk. The interface is configured to receive data with associated write commands and a park signal. The write buffer is configured to temporarily store the data and associated write commands while the data waits to be written on the disk via the transducer. The actuator is configured to move the transducer between a parked position and tracks on a disk where data is read and written. The controller is configured to execute the buffered write commands by positioning the transducer relative to tracks on the disk while writing data from the write buffer to the disk, and is configured to respond to the park signal, which is indicative of an imminent transducer to disk contact condition, by moving the transducer to the park position without completing execution of the buffered write commands.

A method and apparatus which can provide a temperature estimate in a hard disk drive or other electronic device is provided. Output from the sensor, which may be indicative of a location spaced from the target temperature location, is sampled and integrated over an interval of time to form an estimate of average input sensor voltage. During the time interval, history of the HDD pre-amplifier operating modes is accumulated. The results are combined to form an estimate of HDA ambient temperature. Sensor offsets associated with each power mode, and weighted to the corresponding mode duty, can be subtracted from the average input sensor voltage.

A rotatable storage media includes a first data segment stored in first tracks and a second data segment stored in second tracks. The first tracks include a first start track and a first end track, and the second tracks include a second start track and a second end track. The first data segment starts in the first start track at a start rotational phase, ends in the first end track at an end rotational phase, starts in adjacent first tracks at start rotational phases offset by an intra-segment rotational skew angle and ends in adjacent first tracks at end rotational phases offset by the intra-segment rotational skew angles. The second data segment starts in the second start track at the start rotational phase, ends in the second end track at the end rotational phase, starts in adjacent second tracks at start rotational phases offset by the intra-segment rotational skew angle and ends in adjacent second tracks at end rotational phases offset by the intra-segment rotational skew angle. Furthermore, the first and second data segments are radially coherent, and the start and end rotational phases are offset by an inter-segment rotational skew angle that is greater than the intra-segment rotational skew angle.

The present invention is related to a data storage device capable of restricting access to data storage or retrieval when a first code is incompatible with a second code. The data storage device comprises (a) a data storage media having a data storage region; and (b) a controller adapted to compare a first code with a second code and to restrict access to a portion of the data storage region of the data storage device if the first code is incompatible with the second code.

Apparatus and method capable of restricting access to a data storage device

In a data processing system comprising a host system and a memory device including a data storage medium of a predetermined size and corresponding capacity, a secure method of managing available capacity of the storage medium by: maintaining an authentication list comprising a plurality of entries including information uniquely identifying a plurality of memory devices; selecting a section of said data storage medium for data storage, said section having a size representing the available capacity of the memory device; and maintaining identification information in the memory device uniquely identifying the memory device. Further, in response to receipt in the host system of a request for changing the available capacity of the memory device: obtaining information from said memory device including said identifying information; searching said list to find an entry including identification information matching that obtained from the memory device to authorize said change; and if a match is found, then: generating a change command for directing the memory device to change said available capacity; sending the change command to the memory device; and the memory device executing said change command by steps including changing the size of said section.
