A mixer nozzle assembly for mixing fluid introduced into a tank having a tank volume therein. The mixer nozzle assembly includes a stationary body and a rotatable body mounted on the stationary body for rotation about an axis in a predetermined direction. The fluid flows through the stationary body to the rotatable body and exits into the tank volume via one or more outlet apertures, thereby causing the rotatable body to rotate in the predetermined direction about the axis. The mixer nozzle assembly also includes a governor subassembly for controlling a speed of rotation of the rotatable body in the predetermined direction about the axis.

A mixer nozzle assembly for mixing fluid introduced into a tank having a tank volume therein. The mixer nozzle assembly includes a stationary body and a rotatable body mounted on the stationary body for rotation about an axis in a predetermined direction. The fluid flows through the stationary body to the rotatable body and exits into the tank volume via one or more outlet apertures, thereby causing the rotatable body to rotate in the predetermined direction about the axis. The mixer nozzle assembly also includes a governor subassembly for controlling a speed of rotation of the rotatable body in the predetermined direction about the axis and a hydraulic circuit for governing a flow rate of hydraulic fluid directed to the governor subassembly, to adjust the flow rate of the hydraulic fluid for adjusting the speed of rotation of the rotatable body to the preselected speed.

An apparatus for cleaning a tank that is to be installed below the fill line of a tank includes a housing sealably attached to a sidewall of a tank, and a tubing having a flexible output end positioned within the housing such that the output end of the tubing extends past the sidewall of the tank. A control linkage is slidably positioned within the housing. The control linkage is connected to the flexible output end of the tubing. The control linkage is movable between an extended position and a retracted position. The orientation of the flexible output end of the tubing is changed as the control linkage is moved between positions, such that the direction of fluid flowing out of the flexible output end of the tubing is also changed. A seal is provided for sealing the tubing and the control linkage within the housing.

The fluid flows through the stationary body to the rotatable body and exits into the tank volume via one or more outlet apertures for causing the rotatable body to rotate in the predetermined direction about the axis. The mixer nozzle assembly also includes a governor subassembly for controlling a speed of rotation of the rotatable body in the predetermined direction about the axis and a hydraulic circuit for governing a flow rate of hydraulic fluid directed to the governor subassembly, to adjust the flow rate of the hydraulic fluid for adjusting the speed of rotation of the rotatable body to the preselected speed.

A sealing element for a pipeline pig includes rigid first and second cup supports having outer peripheral edges. A resilient sealing element protrudes beyond the outer peripheral edge of each of the first cup support and the second cup support. Means are provided for clamping the sealing element between the first cup support and the second cup support.

Mechanism for adjusting the circumference of scraper cups or discs

An obstacle detecting pig for preliminary inspection of a section of a pipeline travels through the section and determines if there are any restrictions that exceed industry guidelines or that might damage other pigs that require the full bore of the pipe. In a first embodiment, a disk-shaped segmented resilient member () is mounted in the body of the pig. Its outside diameter is smaller by a spacing () than the inside diameter of the pipeline (). The spacing is set at the maximum tolerable size of the obstacle encountered. The deformation of the member () is transmitted by a linkage () to a slider () activating a switch system signaling that an obstacle has been encountered. A non-resiliently deformable checkup disk () may be provided at the rear end of the pig, to double check that a no-signal passage through the pipe is not due to failure of the switching system. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the resilient member is a disc-shaped detector () made from an elastomer and provided at its leading surface with a scratch recording layer (), for instance a layer of lead which is thin enough to follow resilient deformations of the elastomeric ring () as it encounters an obstacle, and return of the ring back to its regular, shape. The scratches caused on the recording layer are evaluated after the passage of the pig through the examined pipeline section. The detector is mounted directly on a slider () or the like operating device designed to produce electric signal when an anomaly is encountered. Preferably, the detector () is a replaceable element of the pig. The device is structurally simple thus providing low manufacturing and operation costs and simple operation.

A downstream plug is disclosed of a simplified structure where a dragging disc is used at a rear end to induce the expansion of locking elements engaging the pipeline. The locking results in an expansion cone being firmly held in place and forming a solid counterpart to the elastomeric seal expanded by the cone.

A pipeline plug is disclosed having an elastomeric disc-shaped sealing element provided with deforming means whereby the outside diameter of the elastomeric element is deformed to reduce its outside diameter to facilitate its insertion onto a pipeline. In another embodiment described, the plugging element and the deforming means are so arranged that when the deforming means act on the element, the latter is expanded into a sealing arrangement. The plugging elements are shown at one end of a spool assembly with resilient guide means to permit movement of the plug through a pipeline, but the plugging elements and their deforming means can also be used separately.

An ice plug for defining a barrier in a pipeline section filled with water, comprises a hollow, cylindrical body enclosed at a front end and provided with guide means for sliding movement of the plug along and within the pipeline. The body has a diameter smaller than that of the pipeline to define with the latter an annular interspace enclosed at opposed axial ends of the plug. The thickness of the annular space is selected to allow free movement of the body through curves in a pipeline and to form a continuous, annular ice layer firmly engaging the inside wall of the pipeline and the outer surface of said body to thus form, together with the body, a temporary water impermeable barrier within the pipeline. A water supply system fills the interspace with process water.

The assembly comprises a pair of semi-circular steel shells. The inner surface of one shell forms a centrally located, circular recess and a concentric groove positioned between the recess and the side edges of the shell. A flat cylindrical annular seal element is seated in and fills the recess. The element is resilient and deformable. It has concentric protruding ribs on its top and bottom surfaces. The seal element is adapted to circumscribe a leaking small hole or crack in the wall of an internally pressurized pipeline. The shells are then circumferentially clamped against the pipeline to cause the element to seal around the leak and to effect tight shell-on-pipe contact. The steel side wall of the recess confines the compressed seal element. The side edges of the shell are then welded together longitudinally and circumferentially to create a permanent pressure vessel sealing and containing the leak. The concentric groove acts as a heat sink to impede the transfer of heat from welding through the shell wall toward the seal element.

The plug is formed of fibrous material held together by a wax binder in the form of a cylindrical body. The body is adapted to fit closely into the bore of an open-ended pipeline. The body has a reduced diameter inner end portion. A thick band of asphalt-base sealant is applied to the inner surface of the pipe at the location to be taken up by the reduced diameter portion. The vertical inner end surface of the plug is also coated with the sealant. When the plug is inserted into the line, its close fit holds it in place and the sealant seals across the bore. The plug functions to isolate residual hydrocarbon vapors in the line while a new section of pipe is tied in. The plug disintegrates when contacted with the subsequent oil flow.

The tightener comprises a scissor clamp having first and second arms pivotally connected at their upper ends. At their lower ends, the arms are pivotally connected with the ends of a loop of chain that encircles a pair of semi-circular steel shells encircling a pipeline. The rod of a cylinder is pivotally connected to move the front arm toward the rear arm. The cylinder is positioned to operate generally perpendicularly relative to the arms.

Fluid actuated pipe clamp tightener

A process is provided for heat treating an annular martensitic heat-affected zone. The heat-affected zone is commonly created in the outer segment of a pipeline wall as a result of applying a circumferential fillet weld to the pipe. The embrittled zone creates a weakness in the pipe wall and it is therefore desirable to heat treat it. The heat-treating process is carried out in connection with a situation where the pipeline has an open end located close to the weld and a plug has been inserted in the bore of the line to isolate the main part of the line from the pipe end having the weld. An expandable and contractable insulating ring is inserted into the pipe bore. The ring is associated with a closure member which blanks and seals the open end of the pipe. The isolating plug is removed and the ring is positioned beneath the weld and expanded to abut the pipe wall. A final circumferential weld or bead is then applied to the existing weld, which causes heating of the martensitic zone. The insulating ring is maintained in place against the pipe wall to ensure that the heated zone cools only slowly. This results in reduction of the hardness of the heat-affected zone. The isolating plug is then re-inserted and the insulating ring and closure member are removed.
