Crystallizable hot melt adhesive compositions comprising block copolyesteramides and alkali metal salts of carboxy polymers. The block copolyesteramides comprise hard or crystalline polyester blocks and soft or amorphous polyamide blocks in the weight ratio of 2:3 to 4:1. The alkali metal salts are salts of copolymers of C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 aliphatic olefins and acrylic or methacrylic acid or salts of copolymers of aromatic olefins and maleic anhydride and provide a concentration of alkali metal cation in the range of 0.1 to 15 meq per 100 parts by weight of copolyesteramide. The hot melt adhesive compositions are useful for bonding plastic parts to form plastic structures which are relatively free of bond line distortion.

Hot melt adhesive compositions

Crystallizable hot melt adhesive compositions comprising block copolyesteramides and alkali metal carboxylates. The block copolyesteramides comprise hard or crystalline polyester blocks and soft or amorphous polyamide blocks in the weight ratio of 2:3 to 4:1. The alkali metal carboxylates provide a concentration of alkali metal cation in the range of 0.1 to 6 meq per 100 parts by weight of copolyesteramide. The hot melt adhesive compositions are useful for bonding plastic parts to form plastic structures which are relatively free of bond line distortion.

A process for bonding a reinforced plastic structure which comprises coating reinforced plastic parts of sheet molding compounds or bulk molding compound with a primer coat and bonding together with a thermoplastic block copolymer.

Process bonded reinforced plastic structures

A bonded reinforced plastic structure which comprises reinforced plastic parts of sheet molding compound or bulk molding compound, coated with a primer coat and bonded together with a thermoplastic block copolymer. The primer coat comprises an epoxidized novolac resin and a resinous amidopolyamine. The block copolymer comprises from 40 to 80 weight percent crystalline polyester or polyamide segments and 20 to 60 weight percent amorphous polyamide or polyether segments and has a crystalline melting point of at least 155.degree. C. The bonded structure is adapted to survive the hot environment of paint curing ovens.

Bonded reinforced plastic structures

A bonded plastic structure which comprises plastic parts of reaction injection molded polyurethane or reaction injection molded nylon coated with a primer coat and bonded together with a thermoplastic block copolymer. The primer coat comprises a moisture-curable polyisocyanate. The block copolymer comprises from 40 to 80 weight percent crystalline polyester or polyamide segments and 20 to 60 weight percent amorphous polyamide or polyether segments and has a crystalline melting point of at least 155.degree. C. The bonded structure is adapted to survive the hot environment of paint curing ovens.

Bonded plastic structures

A bonded reinforced plastic structure which comprises reinforced plastic parts of sheet molding compound or bulk molding compound, coated with a primer coat and bonded together with a thermoplastic block copolymer. The primer coat comprises a moisture-curable polyisocyanate. Hot melt adhesive compositions comprising a block copolymer, aluminum powder, glass fiber and hollow inorganic silicate microspheres. The block copolymer is selected from the group consisting of copolyesters, copolyamides, copoly(esteramides) and copoly(ether-esters) melting at a temperature above about 150.degree. C. and having from about 30 to about 70 weight percent of hard segments and from about 70 to about 30 weight percent of soft segments. The weight ratio of block copolymer to aluminum powder, glass fiber and silicate microspheres is in the range of about 3:7 to about 3:2, the weight ratio of block copolymer to glass fiber is at least about 2:1, the weight ratio of glass fiber to aluminum powder is at least about 1:9 and wherein the volume percent of silicate microspheres is less than about 10. The compositions are particularly useful for filling voids and cavities in substrates.

Block copolymer hot melt adhesive composition

A method of filling a cavity in a substrate which comprises applying excess adhesive composition as a hot melt into the cavity, spreading the adhesive composition to fill the cavity, cooling the adhesive composition and sanding the composition to provide a surface even with the surrounding substrate. The adhesive composition comprises a block copolymer, aluminum powder and glass fiber. The block copolymer is selected from the group consisting of copolyesters, copolyamides, copoly(esteramides) and copoly(ether-esters) melting at a temperature above about 150.degree. C. and having from about 30 to about 70 weight percent of hard segments and from about 70 to about 30 weight percent of soft segments. The weight ratio of block copolymer to aluminum powder and glass fiber is in the range of about 3:7 to about 3:2, the weight ratio of block copolymer to glass fiber is at least about 2:1, and the weight ratio of glass fiber to aluminum powder is at least about 1:9.

Cavity filling with a hot melt adhesive composition

Hot melt adhesive compositions comprising a block copolymer, a particulate mineral reinforcing agent and glass fiber. The block copolymer is selected from the group consisting of copolyesters, copolyamides, copoly(esteramides) and copoly(ether-esters) melting at a temperature above about 150.degree. C. and having from about 30 to about 70 weight percent of hard segments and from about 70 to about 30 weight percent of soft segments. The weight ratio of block copolymer to particulate mineral reinforcing agent and glass fiber is in the range of about 3:7 to about 3:2, the weight ratio of block copolymer to glass fiber is at least about 3:4, and the weight ratio of particulate mineral reinforcing agent to glass fiber is in the range of about 1:3 to about 9:1. The compositions are particularly useful for filling voids and cavities in substrates.

The weight ratio of block copolymer to particulate inorganic reinforcing agent, glass fiber and silicate microspheres is in the range of about 3:7 to about 3:2, the weight ratio of block copolymer to glass fiber is at least about 3:4, the weight ratio of particulate mineral to glass fiber is in the range of about 1:3 to about 9:1 and the volume percentage of hollow inorganic silicate microspheres is less than about 12. The compositions are particularly useful for filling voids and cavities in substrates.

The weight ratio of block copolymer to aluminum powder, glass fiber and silicate microspheres is in the range of about 3:7 to about 3:2, the weight ratio of block copolymer to glass fiber is at least about 2:1, the weight ratio of glass fiber to aluminum powder is at least about 1:9 and wherein the volume percentage of silicate microspheres is less than about 10.

Poly(ester-amide) adhesive compositions comprising a finely divided spheroidal metal. The poly(ester-amide) comprises crystalline polyester and amorphous polyamide segments formed by reaction of a C.sub.18 to C.sub.54 polycarboxylic acid mixture and a C.sub.2 to C.sub.10 aliphatic or alicyclic primary diamine. The finely divided spheroidal metal is selected from the group consisting of aluminum, iron, mild steel, stainless steel and zinc. The weight ratio of poly(ester-amide) to metal is in the range of 70:30 to 30:70. The adhesive compositions are useful as hot melt adhesives and cavity fillings.
