A method and apparatus for determining the switching states of a target wheel used in an internal combustion engine, the method including providing a camshaft, providing a target wheel having teeth coupled to the camshaft, providing a sensor to detect the teeth of the target wheel, providing a cam phaser to phase the camshaft relative to a crankshaft of the internal combustion engine, homing the cam phaser to a known position relative to the crankshaft, rotating the crankshaft and camshaft, detecting the switching of the teeth by the sensor, referencing switching information detected by the teeth to crankshaft position information to produce a calibration for the target wheel, and storing the calibration in a controller to be use for control of the internal combustion engine.

Target wheel tooth detection

A camshaft system for use with an internal combustion engine including a camshaft having a plurality of lobes to actuate valves in the internal combustion engine, a sprocket coupled to the camshaft to drive the camshaft, and a target wheel coupled to the camshaft, the target wheel having an irregular surface capable of providing process data for operation of a plurality of internal combustion engine configurations.

Global cam sensing system

An ignition module that is adapted to be secured to an internal combustion engine. The module has a plastic housing and a metallic cover that is adapted to be secured to an engine. A plurality of ignition coils are located within the housing and cover. The lower wall of the plastic housing has conductors embedded therein that electrically connect the secondary windings of the coils to electrical connector assemblies that are carried by the housing and which are adapted to slip over the spark plugs of an engine. The connector assemblies include means for making an electrical connection to the terminals of the spark plugs. The ignition coils have laminated cores that are clamped between the housing and the cover. The cores directly contact the metallic cover so that the cores have a heat transfer path to the cover and are electrically connected to the cover.
