A high solids, water-borne coating comprises a latex polymer, non-film-forming particulates and water. The high solids coating contains up to 90% solids (non-volatiles/volume) and pigment volume concentration (PVC) that can range between about 5% to 95%. The thick-coverage surface coating herein dries at a fast rate, provides excellent through-dry properties as measured by tensile, elongation, and water resistance, and can replace traditional coatings used in multi-coat processes. The coating herein can contain up to about 40% hollow microspheres to yield a dried coating that has up to about 57% PVC and be used as a roof coating that meets a required elongation of at least 200%.

High solids water-borne surface coating containing hollow particulates

Emulsions of asphaltic materials, such as asphalt or asphalt blends with polymers, in water using copolymeric anionic emulsifiers are disclosed. The copolymeric anionic emulsifiers use ionizable carboxyl groups as their hydrophilic moiety. The emulsions using these copolymeric emulsifiers are stable, allowing them to be used anywhere where asphalt or modified asphalt is used as a sealant, coating, or binder. These emulsions can also be mixed with polymer latices, pigments, fibers, fillers and other additives to impart particular properties specific to the type of application, i.e., pigmented flexible coating compositions, non-sag sealer and sealant compositions, water borne adhesive compositions, etc., for use in construction and industrial fields. These asphalt emulsions have better freeze-thaw stability, higher solids contents, and wider applicability to polymer modified asphalt compositions than prior art emulsions.

An apparatus (10) for applying fluid roof panel adhesive to a substrate includes a holding tank (12) for holding a supply of adhesive vertically above the substrate. The tank is supported by a pair of spaced wheels (14) and has a handle (16) to enable moving the device over the substrate. Openings (32) in a lower wall (30) of the tank enable adhesive to flow onto the substrate. Blocking members (36) associated with each opening are movable in response to the position of a lever (20) to enable or prevent flow of adhesive through the openings. Movement of the apparatus over the substrate provides for controlled deposition of uniformly spaced beads of adhesive suitable for holding roof panels to the substrate.

The present invention relates to low slope roofing systems, particularly in commercial (as opposed to residential) roofing applications. More specifically, the fastener-free roofing system of the present invention is directed to the use of a curing adhesive composition which will simply and safely secure roofing insulation to a roofing deck without the need for mechanical fasteners.
