A composite part made from a sheet molding compound is disclosed as having improved characteristics over traditional sheet molding compound composite parts. The fibrous material is introduced as a veil layer adjacent a paste layer, the veil flows well during the molding process. The improved flow and surface characteristics of a composite part are attributed to the elongation of the veil during molding and to the improved filling capabilities.

The present invention relates to pellets comprising fibers impregnated with resin. The pellets incorporate a mixed lubricant sizing composition comprising at least one cationic lubricant and at least one non-ionic lubricant. These pellets may be consolidated to form fiber reinforced resin composites.

A process for making a composite article comprising providing a coating composition comprising a silane, optional pH modifying agent, and optional lubricant, wherein the silane is compatible with one or more ROMP catalysts used to initiate ring opening metathesis polymerization of the cycloolefin resins; coating fibers with the coating composition; contacting the coated fiber with an uncured cycloolefin resin catalyzed using one or more ROMP catalysts used to form a resin and reinforcing fiber material mixture; and curing the resin and reinforcing fiber material mixture to form the composite article.

Polyolefin fiber-reinforced composites using a fiber coating composition compatible with romp catalysts

A sizing composition for coating glass and carbon fibers. The composition comprises low concentrations of a cationic and nonionic lubricant, a film-forming polymer, and preferably a coupling agent and a hydrolyzing agent. Use of the sizing composition reduces fuzz development, increases wettability, and improves roving package stability.
