The invention comprehends a belt shifting arrangement for an upright cleaner in which belt shifting to an intermediate idler pulley is occasioned by either handle movement or pedal actuation. Either of these movements functions to cam the belt onto the idler pulley or to permit its movement back to an agitator drive pulley.

The invention provides an upper fill tube configuration for a vacuum cleaner that includes: a rigid upper fill tube that communicates, adjacent its upper end, with a dirt collecting receptacle; a flexible tube extending from the cleaner foot; communicating with the rigid upper fill tube and removably secured to it and a latch arrangement carried, in part, by the flexible tube and, in part, by the upper fill tube to releasably retain the two together.

A hexagonal housing unit is erected with flat roof and side wall panels of different shapes, formed of selected desired building materials, and manufactured by production procedures. Certain of the panels may be formed of two pieces or sections. There are several sizes of certain panels to accommodate multiple unit installations either initial or by add-on construction. Simple joints, preferably bolted, connect the panels and proper roof drainage is enabled in multiple unit buildings.

The structure comprehends a power transmission for a power drive cleaner where the clutching arrangement is on the output shaft that provides a direct geared drive to the wheels.

A vacuum cleaner is provided with a dirt cup and a dirt cup holder that telescopically engages with a handle of the cleaner for the guidance of it as the handle of the cleaner pivots relative to the main body of the cleaner.

A floor care appliance is described in which a rigid housing may extend upwardly from the appliance nozzle. The rigid housing may mount a reel therein or may just serve as an appearance housing for the floor care appliance. In either case, the rear of the housing mounts a rigid plate that extends upwardly from it. An upper fill tube has its upper end attached to this plate. The cloth bag for the floor care appliance extends around the fill tube and is mounted to the housing, intermediate its upper and lower ends, by the rigid plate. The cloth bag thereby encapsulates the rigid plate and fill tube so as to provide a pleasing outside appearance to the floor care appliance.

The invention is included in a nozzle having side exhaust so that its suction tube is connected to one side of the nozzle. A groove arrangement of part spiral configuration is made in the internal periphery of the nozzle to provide the nozzle air and entrained dirt with a motion tending to move the air and entrained dirt towards the connecting suction duct. This is occasioned by the agitator brush configuration moving air and entrained dirt in a rotary direction which movement is interrupted by the groove and then moved along it. In addition, the cross sectional dimensioning of the nozzle arrived at tends to provide a substantially constant velocity of air flow to insure a relatively even suction effect completely across the lateral extent of the nozzle mouth.

A floor care appliance is described having a nozzle body that has a floating action relative to its undercarriage. A camming and engaging arrangement is disposed to act between the two to permit height and angular adjustment of the nozzle body. An index means is also provided acting automatically to assure that a particular cam setting is maintained.

A cleaner bottom plate is provided by a one piece molded configuration which includes an integral front sealing bead and a double flanged rear wall.

Canister cleaner arrangements are provided in which auxiliary cooling air is introduced to the cleaner main air stream fan system discharge so as to provide a cooled discharge air temperature to maintain cooled portions of the canister cleaner adjacent the fan discharge. In the first embodiment of the invention, auxiliary cooling air flows through perforations in the bottom pan of the cleaner to mix with the fan system discharge air so that the total flow may then be exited outwardly around the periphery of the canister cleaner. In the second embodiment of the invention auxiliary cooling air moves inwardly into the canister cleaner between the bottom pan therefor and an auxiliary pan spaced above the bottom pan to mix with main stream fan discharge air so that the combined air flow can be discharged downwardly through the bottom pan of the cleaner. This provides an air cushion effect for the canister cleaner.
