A multiple section photomultiplier tube. The tube is constructed essentially as a matrix of several independent tubes in one envelope. The photocathode of each individual section of the tube is formed into an independent surface, and the photocathode to dynode spacings are isolated by a configuration built with separator electrodes which connect to photocathode boundary dividers formed in the faceplate. The boundary dividers also isolate the independent photocathode regions. The boundary dividers can be either slots into which the separator electrodes fit or ribs with which the separator electrodes are engaged.

Structure for a multiple section photomultiplier tube

A focus electrode for an elongated hexagonal faceplate photomultiplier tube. The elongated hexagonal face plate and an off-center cage assembly are made to function properly in a photomultiplier tube by the use of a uniquely shaped asymmetric focus electrode. The focus electrode has a base which is a partial circle with two parallel chords and is constructed with a side wall around the perimeter of the base. The side wall has different heights above the two parallel chords of the base and slopes down to minimum but equal heights at points on the curved perimeter which are approximately at the center plane of the tube.

An electron tube evacuating system includes a manifold section having an evacuation chamber. A tube mounting section has a plurality of evacuation apertures in communication with the evacuation chamber. A plurality of tube mounting members individually hermetically mount tubes to be evacuated onto the mounting section. Each mounting member has an aperture in communication with the evacuation chamber.

The present imaging system, like prior imaging systems, includes an electron tube and an external solenoid which is disposed around a portion of the tube. An electron gun within the tube has a plurality of support beads located substantially symmetrically around the gun. Each of the beads comprises a body of insulating material having a first major surface and an oppositely disposed second major surface. A recess is formed in the first major surface and extends into the body of the material. A plurality of connectors corresponding to the number of supports beads are also provided. Each of the connectors comprises a single piece of metal having a proximal end, a distal end and a central body interconnecting both ends. The proximal end of each connector includes an embossment which conforms to the curvature of the leads which extend through a stem assembly of the tube. The distal end of each connector includes an arcuate termination that makes a line contact with a terminal of an electrostatic yoke formed on an interior surface of an envelope of the tube. The central body of each connector includes a flat support portion adjacent to the proximal end and a reverse-bend portion disposed between the flat support portion and the distal end. A protrusion extends from the flat support portion of each connector. The protrusions project into the recesses formed in the support beads to secure and longitudinally position the gun. The reverse-bend portions of the connectors provide an inwardly-directed spring force to radially position the electron gun on the longitudinal axis of the envelope.

A modular welding apparatus comprises a welding assembly having a welding head with an integral actuating assembly. A foot treadle initiates motion of the welding head. A conductive base member is spaced from the welding head. A welding power supply has one lead connected to the welding head and a second lead connected to the base member. An interchangeable welding module is disposed on the base member in electrical contact therewith. The welding module includes a conductive support plate and a locking cam for detachably attaching the support plate to the base member. Two movable, pre-aligned welding electrodes are disposed on the welding module. One of the welding electrodes is electrically connected to the base member and the other welding electrode is electrically connected to the welding head. At least one of the electrodes is in communication with the actuating assembly.

Modular welding apparatus having two movable welding electrodes

A photomultiplier tube comprises an evacuated envelope having a photoemissive cathode, a shield cup spaced from the cathode and an electron multiplier cage assembly abutting the shield cup. The cage assembly includes a pair of transversely spaced insulating support plates having oppositely disposed surfaces. A plurality of dynodes and an anode are disposed between the support plates. A plurality of oppositely disposed locating slots are formed in the shield cup. At least one tab slot is formed through the oppositely disposed surfaces of each of the support plates. A plurality of connecting tab members are provided for connecting the cage assembly to the shield cup. Each tab member includes a slot engaging portion, a locking portion, a locating portion and an attachment portion. The slot engaging portion is disposed within the tab slot of the support plate. The locking portion extends from one end of the slot engaging portion for securely engaging one surface of the plate. A locating portion extends from the other end of the slot engaging portion along the other oppositely disposed surface of the plate and through one of the locating slots formed in the shield cup. The attachment portion of the tab member is fixedly attached to the shield cup.

A photomultiplier tube comprises an evacuated envelope having a photoemissive cathode, a shield cup spaced from the cathode and an electron multiplier cage assembly abutting the shield cup. The cage assembly includes a pair of transversely spaced support plates having a plurality of support slots formed therethrough. The support plates are attached to the shield cup. A plurality of electrodes are disposed between the support plates. At least one of the electrodes has reference apertures therein and a mesh member attached thereto which has locating slots aligned with the reference apertures. The electrodes have an active portion and attachment tabs which are disposed within the support slots in the support plates to support the electrodes therebetween. The electrodes also have support shoulders formed in opposite sides thereof between the active portion and the attachment tabs. The support shoulders have a width greater than that of the slots in the support plates, whereby the support shoulders provide stop locations adjacent to the support plates.

Electrode structure for an electron multiplier cage assembly

A photomultiplier tube comprises an evacuated envelope including a faceplate and a sidewall. A conductive coating is disposed annularly around an interior portion of the sidewall adjacent to the faceplate and on a longitudinally extending portion of the sidewall as a strip. A photoemissive cathode is disposed on an interior surface of the faceplate and on the conductive coating adjacent thereto. A shield cup is spaced from the cathode and centered within the envelope by a plurality of bulb spacers. An electron multiplier cage assembly abuts the shield cup and is attached thereto. A cathode contact assembly is in contact with the strip on the sidewall. A plurality of locating slots are formed in the base of the shield cup to orient the bulb spacers in contact with the sidewall of the envelope and spaced from the longitudinally extending strip portion of the conductive coating thereon. The bulb spacers include stop shoulders which retain the bulb spacers within the locating slots. The cathode contact assembly includes a cathode contact support member and a resilient cathode contact member. The cathode contact support member includes an electrical contact tab struck from the body thereof and a cathode support tab which includes an extruded area to circumferentially locate the resilient cathode contact member between two consecutively spaced bulb spacers and to align the resilient cathode contact member with the longitudinally extending strip portion of the conductive coating on the sidewall of the envelope.

A photomultiplier tube comprises an evacuated envelope having a photoemissive cathode, a shield cup spaced from the cathode and an electron multiplier cage assembly abutting the shield cup. The cage assembly includes a pair of transversely spaced support plates having a plurality of support slots formed therethrough. Each of the support plates has a distal end and a proximal end, with the proximal ends being attached to the shield cup. A light shield is disposed between the distal end of the support plates. An anode and a plurality of dynodes, at least one of which has a field mesh attached thereto, are disposed between the support plates and attached thereto by end tabs. The end tabs extend from the side of the anode and the dynodes. The aforementioned shield cup includes flaps which establish a minimum transverse spacing between the proximal ends of the support plates. The light shield has a transverse dimension substantially equal to that of the flaps to establish a minimum transverse spacing between the distal end of the support plates. The flaps and the light shield thus act, in combination, to provide a uniform minimum transverse spacing between the support plates which is greater than the transverse dimension of the anode and the dynodes to prevent distortion of the field mesh. The tab ends of the dynode and the anode are bifurcated so that one portion of selected ones of the tab ends can be formed to secure the dynodes and the anode between the support plates.

An electron tube, preferably a camera tube, has an improved structure for supporting and centering a cylindrical electrode within a tubular envelope having a precisely formed inner surface. The support structure comprises a centering ring that has a plurality of radial sectors formed to a ring circumference and a plurality of resilient radial finger-like members formed intermittent the radial sectors. The ring circumference is formed within a close spacing of the inner surface of the envelope and is attached to the electrode so that the ring circumference is substantially concentric with the outer surface of the electrode. The finger-like members of the ring are formed to define an outer diameter that is greater than the inner diameter of the envelope, so that when the electrode with the attached ring is inserted into the envelope, the members flexibly bear against the inner envelope surface and guide the ring into position without deforming the radial sectors. The concentricity of the electrode to the envelope is established by the spacing between the radial sectors and the inner surface of the envelope.

Electron tube having electrode centering means

The metal end plates of a laser device are provided with relatively large annular hub portions extending outwardly from the laser envelope. Glass mirror blocks are used, each having a small area of a reflective coating in the center of one surface of the block. To bond the block to an end plate of the laser device, the mirror is aligned substantially on the axis of the hub and rf energy is used to heat the end of the hub to a sufficiently high temperature to seal it to the glass. The hub is brought into contact with the glass surface of the mirror block and a seal is made without damage to the mirror coating.
