A marine drive has a primary exhaust outlet on its lower gearcase that discharges a primary flow of exhaust gas from the engine to seawater in which the marine drive is situated. A secondary exhaust outlet is located on the marine drive above the primary exhaust outlet and discharges a secondary flow of exhaust gas from the engine to atmosphere around the marine drive at least when the engine is operated at an idle speed. A tertiary exhaust outlet is located on the marine drive between the primary and secondary exhaust outlets, and discharges a tertiary flow of exhaust gas from the engine to the seawater or to the atmosphere depending upon a current location of the tertiary exhaust outlet with respect to the seawater. A muffler is configured to reduce noise emanating from the tertiary exhaust outlet.

An outboard motor has a powerhead; a driveshaft housing located below the powerhead; a steering arm extending forwardly from the driveshaft housing; a steering tube extending downwardly from the steering arm; an upper mounting device that resiliently mounts the steering arm to the driveshaft housing; and a lower mounting device comprising a yoke that laterally extends from the steering tube. The yoke is clamped to the steering tube and contains port and starboard mounts that resiliently couple the steering tube to the driveshaft housing.

An outboard motor has an adapter plate with an upper surface supporting an engine, a lower surface spaced therefrom, and fore and aft sides connecting the upper and lower surfaces. A first pocket is defined in the adapter plate's fore side and a second pocket is defined in its aft side. A midsection housing is coupled to the adapter plate's lower surface and suspends a propulsion unit therebelow. A driveshaft coupling the engine's output shaft to the propulsion unit's propeller shaft extends through the adapter plate. A steering arm, which extends into the first pocket, has a hole through which the driveshaft extends. A mount in the second pocket is located aft of the driveshaft, and the mount's fore side is coupled to the steering arm's aft end by way of connectors. A cover plate attached to the adapter plate's aft side secures the mount within the second pocket.

An outboard motor adapter plate couples a marine engine to a driveshaft housing, and includes an upper rim configured to be coupled to a lower surface of a cylinder block of the engine. A lower rim of the adapter plate is configured to be coupled to an upper surface of a sump located in the driveshaft housing. A wall defines a passageway having an inner perimetral surface, and the inner perimetral surface extends from the upper rim to the lower rim. A mounting area is configured for coupling a mount to the adapter plate. A shield covers at least a portion of the inner perimetral surface adjacent the mounting area, so as to at least partially thermally isolate the mount from heated fluid that drains from the cylinder block, through the passageway, and into the sump. A tie bar arrangement uses a rod end cartridge assembly that provides relative rotatability between an associated rod end and a coupler tube. The provision of a connecting link and steering arm adapter associated with the rod end cartridge assembly also provides relative rotation about first and second axes which allow sufficient flexibility to avoid placing the tie bar arrangement under excessive stress when one marine propulsion device is tilted relative to another marine propulsion device.

A connection system for connecting two or more marine propulsion devices together provides a coupler that can be rotated in place, without detachment from other components, to adjust the distances between the tie bar arms. In addition, the use of various clevis ends and pairs of attachment plates on the components significantly reduces the possibility of creating moments when forces and their reactions occur between the various components.

A jack plate is configured to allow removal of hydraulic components from a fixed portion of the jack plate without having to remove an outboard motor from the jack plate. A mechanical stop device is provided which supports a movable member of the jack plate relative to a stationary member of the jack plate and, as a result, supports the outboard motor even as the hydraulic components are removed from the jack plate. This allows the hydraulic cylinder, hydraulic pump, and motor to be removed from the jack plate by loosening and then detaching a removable bracket member from the jack plate. As a result, the hydraulic system can be inspected, maintained, or replaced without having to remove the outboard motor from the jack plate.
